But these demands don't arise out of thin air; they are forced on us by experiments. Anil Ananthaswamy has provided a lively introduction to the most paradigmatic of these: the (in)famous double-slit experiment." --Sean Carroll, author of The Big Picture “The double-slit experiment is among the most important experiments ever conducted, both scientifically and historically. In this brisk and enjoyable book, Anil Ananthaswamy gives the double-slit the biography it has long deserved. Anyone interested in the true nature of our quantum world should read this book.”--Adam Becker, Ph.D., author of What Is Real?   “All the strangeness of the quantum world is revealed as Ananthaswamy skillfully weaves an almost magical tale out of who, what, when, where and the elusive why surrounding modern versions of an experiment first performed over two hundred years ago. A must read for all those interested in the nature of reality.”--Manjit Kumar, author of Quantum"Like quantum particles encountering the fabled double slit, physicists have traveled many different paths in trying to parse the beguiling implications of quantum theory. Through Two Doors at Once is a marvelous guide to the leading ideas – and the stakes – in that century-long quest."--David Kaiser, author of How the Hippies Saved Physics"The first time I saw the double-slit experiment, I thought it was a trick. Even now that I know it's real, it still seems like magic. In his new book, Anil Ananthaswamy brings alive the magic of quantum mechanics."--Sabine Hossenfelder, physicist and author of Lost in Math"For a lover of physics and mathematics, there could not have been a better book to explain the complexities of quantum mechanics." --The Hindustan Times

Describes in very readable form the current controversies and uncertainties among leading physicists about the significance and meaning of latest experimental results in the world of quantum mechanics. From Maxwell, Bohr, and Einstein through Bell and Penrose, and dozens of others, how the most recent variations of the classic two-slit experiment are changing out concepts of space and time. How "entanglement" and Bell's inequality have challenged Einstein's requirement of locality. What is the real "measurement" problem? Can you really observe quantum actions with non-quantum devices? Does the collapse of the Shroedinger wave equation require a human observation? Why are Bohm's alternative explanation of the quantum world and Everett's "many worlds" interpretation gaining more supporters over time? Your understanding of space, time, of existence in general, will never be the same. There are detailed explanations of various forms of the two-slit experiment that can be challenging to follow, but you can skip them and just read the results and why physicists disagree what those results mean. One of the best books I have read on this subject--a page turner.

Ananthaswamy uses Young’s 200 year old "double slit" experiment to contextualize his survey of the bleeding edge quantum physics study happening today. Refreshingly, this book doesn't bog down with overused biographical and historical anecdotes that often plague QM books written for the layperson; Ananthaswamy sticks to the science. He is a fine writer who conveys concepts like Bell's Inequality, delayed choice/erasure experiments, Bohmian mechanics, and trendy no-collapse theories with mastery and clarity.A fun read for hobbyists like me and a primer for anyone with an interest. Enjoy!

Having read the author's prior books, and being familiar with the experiment and its importance, I was not expecting to be surprised by this book. I expected little more than a lucid, precise, and well-written exposition of the history of science and events with which I was already familiar. Instead, I was delighted to read a surprisingly illuminating discussion of the experiment from multiple angles, including its implications, and where we stand. The book lived up to the high bar its predecessors had set in my mind, and surprised me by offering greater clarity than I thought would be possible when I started reading it. A thoroughly enjoyable read on a deceptively simple experiment that is at the heart of a mind-bendingly profound topic.

The world of quantum phenomena is truly weird. It is hard to wrap your head around it. But by repeatedly returning to the two slit experiment this book makes that world accessible to a wide audience. It then branches off into simple, clear explanations of various experiments and their results to make the specifics of that weirdness completely understandable. At the same time it takes us through various attempts to organize and make sense of it all. It starts with Bohr's Copenhagen interpretation, the approach still favored by most physicists. But it also takes us on a tour through other approaches including my favorite, the one attributed primarily to Bohm. This is not my first trip to this particular rodeo. But with previous surveys I have been left with various head scratchers. The one that has bugged me the most for the longest is the "measurement" problem that is often associated with entanglement. Under certain circumstances entangled systems of particles collapse. According to a popular line of thinking one necessary circumstance is that something needs to be measured by an "observer". And apparently this observer needs to be a sentient being. That makes no sense to me. But the origins of and justification for this line of thinking is laid out clearly and explained thoroughly. So now I understand why people think the way they do. I am just more than ever convinced they are wrong. This happened to me with several things I have been stewing over for years. I now feel that I have a much better grasp on them. I have even been introduced to new things to puzzle over. But in all cases the reader is kept grounded and oriented. If this is your first introduction to this subject or your tenth you will find much clarification of both the ideas and the experiments that underpin the ideas. I can't recommend this book enough.

I’ve been trying to twist my mind around quantum theory for more than 50 years now, and Anil has now given it another twist. Somehow he’s made it clearer, though, with his explanations (and diagrams) of the major points of view. I particularly liked his last chapter with its hope that through all this there will be some kind of synthesis, or not, that will be the breakthrough that we’re all secretly hoping for.

The classic double slit experiment was part of my high school physics class in 1965. It cropped up again in college physics. At that time there was no clear explanation of what was happening. In the years there were occasional articles that discussed various interpretations of the experiment. Since my working life was focused on industrial chemistry I lost track of the physics and the interpretations of fundamental quantum physics. For anyone that finds this puzzle fascinating and has not kept up to speed this is the book for you. The questions are still there but they have become more sophisticated.
