Reed is a very devout catholic. His life is rigid and nothing changes from day to day. Until he runs into Nic, his best friend from 20 years ago. Nic, the Episcopal priest. Once they get reacquainted their lives become totally entangled. Nic needing Reed as much as he needs to breathe. Reed desperately wants Nic but can’t reconcile his religious beliefs with wanting a man. They belong together but their issues have to be worked through first. So much indecision and angst between these guys. I worried about the priest issue but I didn’t need too. This author like to push boundaries and excels at it. Nice, satisfying, well done story.

A Taste Of Sin is angsty. Like so angsty. I wasn't very far into my reading when I messaged my best friend like "this book makes me want to drink." There's so much tension between these two characters my heart was both bleeding for them and was frustrated with their back and forth.Reed is very lost. He lives a structured life and tries to pretend he's content in it. It's not until Dominic walks back into his life that he realizes he's been lying to himself for over twenty years. For Reed, it's hard to come to terms with his desires and his religion. He absolutely broke my heart and pissed it off at the same time. His hot and cold, while understandable, was unfair to both of them. Reed does a lot of growing, a lot of thinking, a lot of accepting in this book and it's admirable because the decisions he has to make aren't easy ones. Especially when you know deep down that it's okay to feel the way you do but have yet to come to terms with what those feelings actually mean.Dominic, oh Dominic is just everything. All I'll say is that if he were my priest I sure as hell would go to church more often than I do. Dominic has loved Reed since they were kids. He spent years hurting for the boy he lost, only to come face to face with him after finally closing off that part of his heart. I felt for him so much. He loved Reed but he didn't want to get hurt by Reed. And I didn't blame him. No one wants to get their heart broken. These two men had so much going against them. Even though Reed wasn't sure about anything when it came to Dominic, he still followed his desires. He clung to his misguided faith, but in doing so he let it lead him to what was truly important to him. Seeing him learn and grow with and without Dominic was special. Because he was able to get to a place where he realized he could have both. Where he was allowed to have both.I think that's one of the things that causes me to stay away from the other priest books. The back and forth, the use of faith to push the character one way or the other. While A Taste Of Sin is not preachy at all. It does have some very good points about faith that I am glad are in there. With Reed's struggles and eventual acceptance of himself, the reader can see that it may be possible for them to come to terms with their life. That may not be the intention, but it's there and I am so grateful it is.Kate Hawthorne wrote a book featuring a rather sensitive subject matter and she turned it into a love story about two men that left me speechless. It was angsty, so angsty I thought I would explode before any of the good stuff happened. It made me cry, in public no less. Besides the fact that Reed and Dominic took their sweet time getting on the same page, this book was brilliantly thought out and smartly written.A Taste Of Sin is book one in the Secrets in Edgewood series and I cannot wait to find out what else this town has in store for us.

Holy angst!! This was amazing, I couldn’t put it down! I truly fell in love with Nic and Reed. The sexual tension and angst in this book was off the charts hot. The chemistry and back and forth between Nic and Reed just kept you hooked and both wanting to race to the end of the book, and also never wanting it to end! Reed’s struggle with his faith and reconciling that to the feelings he’s always had for Nic was so emotional. This book really hit all the emotional feels for me. Honestly I can’t say more about how much I enjoyed this book.I don’t often find time to re-read, but I know this one is going on that short list. I couldn’t recommend this read more.

Dominic & Reed get a second chance, but it’s twenty years late and very unexpected.Reed has built a safe, straight laced life that’s full of predictable respectability as a devout Catholic. Dominic is just as dedicated to his Episcopal faith but has made sure his choices wouldn’t hold him back. This book is full of angst... no, turmoil is a word that works better I think. But it’s also very sweet and these men have something beautiful together. Dominic wasn’t really looking for something, but he was always hopeful for a chance with the one he lost and only fears for his heart. Reed although desperate for this connection, fears the judgement of others and the fate of his soul. It was hard to read at times, wading through all the emotion and doubt. Anyone who has struggled to reconcile the differences of their identity and faith or how they were raised will really relate to this one. I can see how this one tested Hawthorn but in the end it is wonderfully written. Lovely, heart wrenching launch to a new series. I can’t wait to discover more of the secrets in Edgewood!

A Taste of Sin is beautiful and heartbreaking and hot as heck! I love this book so much!!Reed and Nic are made for each other and their chemistry is off the charts. The story tells the struggles Reed faces while he realizes his true self without the overshadowing of guilt from the religious views he was taught as a child. Throughout all of Reed’s struggles, Nic is there to help him see how beautiful and freeing it is to accept his true self, and love without fear of persecution or guilt. This book is absolutely amazing and hot as hell!! Nic and Reed’s love is so beautiful. I highly recommend it!!

Kate delivers another winner in this emotional story of buttoned up Catholic school Principal Reed who accidentally runs into long lost foster brother Nic (Dominic) now Father O’Halloran, an Episcopalian priest who has not ever forgotten him. Angst, and steamy heat & religious turmoil ensue as well as bigotry and betrayal in their past. Loved it!

This is one of the best books I've read in a while. Nic and Reed are given a second chance at love but it's not easy. There is everything - angst, lust, love, fear and regret. This story is one you will find hard to put down!

Mirror of the Arab World: Lebanon in Conflict

From Booklist

Reporter Mackey focuses on Lebanon, “the most transparent of all Arab states,” to offer insight into the complexities of and challenges posed by the Middle East. She examines the cultural, religious, economic, and historical factors that contribute to the current politics within the Middle East—specifically Lebanon—and with Western nations, understanding that the Middle East has been complicated by artificial boundaries set by Westerners after World War I and interest in protecting the state of Israel. Those boundaries have not altered the strong influence of loyalty to ethnicity, tribe, religion, or family. Mackey maintains that Lebanon offers a microcosm of every major issue that has plagued the broader Middle East, including Palestinian statehood, Sunni-Shia sectarianism, and militant Islam. Despite its large Christian population and comparative cosmopolitanism, Lebanon took center stage in Western concerns about the Middle East until the U.S. invasion of Iraq. But Mackey maintains that Lebanon still holds the greatest promise to understanding the Middle East. She offers a clearly written, well-researched analysis of Lebanon and broader Middle Eastern issues. --Vanessa Bush

Great history on the Civil War in Lebanon. Very insightful.

To read this book is to come to beleive that everything that has taken place in Lebanon has something to do with Israel. While this may be the propoganda of Hizbullah it hardly meets with reality. The author begins by claiming the American invasion of Iraq was designed to 'protest Israel without forcing Tel Aviv to address Palestinian rights.' Unfortunatly there is no evidence for this in scholarly form or from media or government broadcasts in 2003. It is a claim out of the mouth of a conspiracy theorist. The obsession with Israel takes away from any context in the book. In desscribing the rise of the Phalange the book seeks to see it entirely from the viewpoint of Israel, whereas the Phalange and its heritage in Peirre Gemayel go back to the 1930s, long before Israel. The author attributes the Israeli invasion in 1982 entirely to an alliance between Bashir Gemayel and Israel which was only slightly true. Begin indeed wanted to save the only non-Muslim neighbor Israel had and he enjoyed the idea of helping beleagured Christians but the author seems to ignore that Palestinian rocket attacks on Israel preceeded the invasion, as did the killing of an Israeli diplomat. The author seems to have forgotten the mini-state Arafat created in Lebanon. These blatent omissions make the rest of the material in the book suspect. How can one know what to trust. The history of Lebanon is interesting and there are nuggets of interest in this book, but the strange political interpretations and selective memory of the author and the failure to focus on Lebanese culture, for instance the Druze and Greek-Orthodox and Armenians, and instead to make this book about Israel's role in Lebanon weakens it. Lebanon is not really a mirror of the Arab world either. It is entirely unique.Seth J. Frantzman

I found this book very good at pointing to the complexities in dealing with the "identity" question that is very active in both East and West. I am a Lebanese-American from south Lebanon and serve in the US Armed Forces. In reading this book I couldn't help but laugh (in a good way) at the similarities between what the author describes in it and the personalities I am force to accept. Her ability to dissect the shades of chemistry in culture, politics, and economics is Eye-POPING!!! Any one interested in culture and conflict management in; or the recent history of, the Middle East must read this book.

As someone who lived in Beirut in the early sixties and has lost touch with the country, I found Mackey extremely helpful in putting all subsequent events into perspective without taking sides except against the selfish elites who have ruined the country over and over again.

"Mirror of the Arab World: Lebanon in Conflict" by Sandra Mackey is a journalistic rehash of repetitive accounts of what goes on in Lebanon. The book scandalously borrows from other standard works without substantiation or referecing even when statistics and important details are stated in the book. Entire passages seem to have been taken liberally from other books without footnoting that. It is full of factual and historical errors (pre-war Lebanese election was in 1972 not 1974, Hafez Assad died in 2000 not 2002, Syria's president is Bashar not Bashir, etc.). The attempt to collapse complex issues about religion and community and the narratives of Iraq and other Middle East countries is anything but professional. The choice of the photo on the cover is ill-advised. It is about the destruction of Beirut's downtown in 1975 but this risks giving the reader the feeling that this is happening now.On the bright side, those trying to learn something about Lebanon and the Middle East for the first time will get an easy-going read. Also I grant the author her good intentions towards the people of the Middle East.

Sandra shows in this book a comand in Lebanese affairs, so this is a great read for people traying to understand the actual Lebanon.

Four Seasons at the Shore: Photographs of the Jersey Shore

From Publishers Weekly

New Jersey's shoreline gets the royal treatment in this robust collection of color photographs. Though heavy on images depicting Long Beach Island and Barnegat Bay, the book does offer images of beaches from Sandy Hook to Absecon, with the majority of the photos showing people fishing, sailing, sunbathing, surfing, eating ice cream and engaging in other beach activities. The book's summer section is a riot of people and color, while winter, spring and fall are more pensive, showing images of abandoned skiffs pulled ashore and Asbury Park's deserted amusement park. The essays-largely personal, though still accessible to the general reader-address the region's wildlife and landscape, the onslaught of part-time residents in July and August, and tasks such as looking for driftwood to make a fall fire and hanging wet beach towels on the clothesline to dry. Quotes from Bruce Springsteen songs and Walt Whitman poems complete this handsome volume.Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

This is a beautiful compilation of pictures of the Jersey Shore and announce to all why it is we from New Jersey love our shore. The pictures explain to others why we remain "Stronger than the Storm"

beautiful pictures

Peter O'Brien's sunset with the loving couple seated on the high bench found on the cover really looks beautiful especially the sunset scenario color. In addition, Peter O'Brien's Lightning Picture with a purple background color found inside the book relects a message of a bad storm on its way to cause damage to the community.

Anyone who loves the Jersey shore will love these photos...great coffee table book.

I've been at "The Shore" for summer vacations for all mylife, and I've recently become interested in photography.From those perspectives, I found this book to be quitenice in its selection and quality of images. ( 2004,so presumably these were mostly film photos, pre-digitialdominance.) I only had a little time with the book, boughtin a gift shop at Sunset Beach (with the Sunken Ship, an oldone-of-few concrete ship from WW-I (likely in the book)and given to my mother, a Jersey gal in late years, now.(-;

I am a proud Jersey Girl, and I have been going "down the shore" every summer since I was a small child. This books wondefully captures the very essence of the shore...all of the things that make it unique; all of the things that make it beautiful; all of the reasons why it is so magical. This is a fantasic book--with unbeatable pictures of the best place on Earth! The essays and quotes that are included also add to the experience. I highly recommend this to anyone who loves the Jersey Shore! It is a little expensive, but worth every penny!

The Lost History of the New Madrid Earthquakes

Review

"Valencius writes with creativity and purpose, weaving together history and science and interesting anecdotes ranging from a Davy Crockett hunting trip to the 'earthquake pig' that survived 36 days in the rubble of a 2008 quake in China. . . . By the time readers have finished the book, they should understand not only the New Madrid quakes but the larger process of understanding how we remember and contextualize important historical events." (William Lowry The Common Reader)"Provides not only a detailed account of the various peoples in the region of New Madrid and the effect of the earthquakes upon them, [but] also contemplates the history of knowledge of the event. . . . Valencius manages to recover vividly an emotional, somatic, and environmental moment." (Journal of Interdisciplinary History)“In an obscenely interesting new book, The Lost History of the New Madrid Earthquakes, Valencius uncovers the quakes and their rich and various meanings—to increasingly diminished Native populations, who interpreted them as a sign to return to tradition in the face of colonial encroachment; to a young nation about to enter into another war with Great Britain, with some religious revivalists of its own; and to a burgeoning scientific community that still placed a premium on anecdotal evidence. . . . Valencius is an engaging, frequently funny storyteller.” (Sam Worley Chicago Reader)"Lively, comprehensive. . . . Valencius's examination of an array of early–nineteenth century earthquake experiences, thinkers, and theories are befitting of the sprawling geographical scope of the earthquakes." (Jonathan Hancock, Hendrix College Register of the Kentucky Historical Society)"Through her collections of vignettes, textual, and visual evidence, Valencius explains not only how the 1811-1812 New Madrid earthquakes dramatically altered American history in the NMSZ, but also why the human experience and person records of physical phenomena are worthy of recognition and study by modern designers, engineers, and policy makers." (Earthquake Spectra)“How is it possible for a natural disaster to remake an entire region, physically and socially—and yet to be erased from history within two generations? In The Lost History of the New Madrid Earthquakes Conevery Bolton Valencius tells a moving and mind-boggling tale of the production and destruction of natural knowledge. She follows the motley cast of amateurs who first tracked down the scientific evidence, as well as the modernizing forces that buried it once again. Her prodigious research reveals exactly how these earthquakes changed the course of history in the Mississippi Valley region. Remarkably, she shows that if we want to understand race relations in this part of the country in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, we need to understand geology. This beautifully written book will stand as a model for integrating environmental and social history with the history of science.” (Deborah R. Coen, author of The Earthquake Observers)

This is a much more thorough account of not only the event of the New Madrid earthquakes in 1811 & 1812 than the book The Day the Mississippi Ran Backwards. I am fascinated with learning more about natural disasters which have occurred in the past. This book only gets 4 out of 5 stars because at least once it almost lost my interest but I kept reading anyway. I'm glad I did. This book gives a a really full picture of life in that area during that time period. The author comes forward through time to more recent times sharing the development of seismology but along the way the author tells why the New Madrid quakes were disregarded and nearly forgotten. I did enjoy this book and will likely read it again.

I thought the book was going to be a popular science, geology book, but it wasn't. There was some geology, but it was mostly a social history that drew many questionable conclusions. I read less than a quarter of it before putting it aside.

Instead of simply discussing the physical impact of this a catastrophic event, Valcencius embeds its consequences in the ethnic, religious, and economic milieu of the time. A great piece of investigative history, I heartily recommend it

I live about 80 miles from New Madrir, so I'm curious about the history of the region. This book is one of the best accounts I have found.

This book was not what I expected. I expected more on the science and less on personal accounts. The portion on native Americans was wy too long.

I liked it because I like history and this book gave the history of the New Madrid Earthquakes from several different perspectives. I especially liked the chapter on the earthquakes and how they were part of a religious revival.I did find one typo on page 114 "1895" is listed as a date for some of Tecumseh's activities and on the same page "1805" is listed as a date for some of his other activities. Page 112 has "1813" as the date of Tecumseh's death, so something seems to be out of sequence.Other than that, I liked the book and highly recommend it to other people interested in the history of the quakes. I guess I am especially interested in this topic because I live in North Little Rock, Arkansas, which will probably be decimated when the next New Madrid area earthquake(s) of the same magnitude occur.

This book is a seminal work. It is a comprehensive rendering of the events before, during and after the tragic New Madrid earthquakes which occurred in December, 1811 and January and February 1812. There were thousands of other, smaller quakes before and long after.I’m qualified to write this in praise of Professor Valencius because I’ve written extensively on the NMSZ (New Madrid Seismic Zone.) and served as a consultant to county disaster preparedness groups to aid in their compliance with state and federal readiness. Our home just happens to sit on the epicenter of the December 16th, 1811 quake, four miles south of the Missouri Bootheel.I’ve followed her down many of the same roads of research but she drilled much deeper than I did for I was only writing a novel. She has researched the only clues to what happened in taking most seriously the writings of the period be they understated or overblown. Her coloration of the people of the era is illuminating. The other twenty five percent of this work is most of the geology of these horrific events and is of equal interest. If you have no interest in the NMSZ or mid plate phenomena, this may not be your book. However, if your interest is passing or passionate you will be consumed by the Professor’s evidence and conclusions.Conevery Bolton Valencius has researched and written the gold standard of our understanding of these incredible and horrible events. No other book even comes close, not even mine.
