I was a little unsure about this one at first. I read some of the reviews and I wasn't sure I wanted to go into a huge book with a confusing number of p.o.vs.Turns out, it wasn't like that. After getting introduced to the main characters the only other ones were a few related characters.Also, the plot is a lot more about the scheming and the antics of the gods ( and the mortals they try to use as pawns) than the description really made out.This wasn't really a bad thing.The plot was very well thought out and the world was richly constructed.The characterisation was another strong point. I found myself caring about the characters in the world and thinking about them when I wasn't reading. That's a sure sign of a great book, to me.Lu, or not Lu was my personal favorite. He was such fun!All in all this has the feel of Erickson's Mazalan series but with less nihilism, thankfully.I would definitely recommend this this if you enjoy big, engrossing fantasy as it's a real winner.I'm eagerly awaiting the next one!
Overall, excellent read. Healthy 5 stars. Early in the book the author leaves a lot for the reader to infer, and does a good job of explaining it later. Definitely worth a re-read to see how many clues you missed early on. It is a world spanning adventure, with a lot of different things views from a lot of different characters. I am eagerly awaiting the second book.
I liked this book. I like that it's long and doesn't get boring. It's definitely worth reading
The only reason I didn't give this a five is it left me wanting. There are so many loose ends. I do see now this is the first in a series, so those may resolve. Overall I would buy it again. I look forward to the rest of the series.
I struggled very hard to like these characters. Not a single god came off as likeable and the human pawn characters were just as unlikeable. I read another reviewer liken this book to Erickson's Malazan series but I highly disagree. Those books held a depth of world building and characters a reader can get behind that this first installment lacks. This book has 3 stars for the following reasons:1) Lu/not Lu is as close to a likeable character I could find2) I love and respect long epic fantasy3) Regardless of my thoughts on the characters, Justan is obviously an excellent writer.
It's a really good read, I enjoyed the book, it's long; not your in done in two days free book. The author can write, too much... A lot. the story is good, it takes awhile to get there and it really leaves a bunch of holes in the end, but don't get me wrong it took my brain awhile to digest all the side stories and vague mentions of God's and not gods. At times there will be questions and three paragraphs of text of "thoughts" before a one word answer... It was frustrating but I stuck with it and the book was good the author finally gets around to closing story right at the end. Then the book ends. Leaving characters floating for me, but I hope he gets around to finish running the story. It has good premise and the story line is really good. Looking forward to the next book, so we can finish so loose ends on the characters left hanging, or i can hate the writer for all time.
I don't generally expect the fantasy books I get on Kindle Unlimited to be 5 stars. More like 3 stars and a lot of fun. This book had fantastic content, complex characters, originality of concept, and took longer than an hour to read, all of which I value highly. Highly recommended. Looking forward to the future works of Justan Henner.
I made it through four chapters and decided to put this book down. What I did read was vary difficult to follow along with and several passages were decidedly incoherent. Maybe I didn't read far enough into the book for things to start making sense, but I guess I just didn't see the purpose here.I hate to sound negative about someone's creative work, but this book wasn't for me.
