Review

'This is the book we all need right now. If you're longing for authentic community but aren't sure where to begin, Shannan and this beautifully written book are the perfect guide. I truly believe when we stand together we stand a chance . I cheered along with every word.' - Korie Robertson, New York Times bestselling author'These are the days when we could all use a firm but gentle nudge to extend extra kindness to the people around us. Shannan reminds us to pay attention, look outside of ourselves, lay aside our preconveived judgements, and stay put, bearing with each other, carrying each others' burdens, and finding Jesus at the center of it all.' - LaTasha Morrison, founder of Be the Bridge'Our nonstop consumer society seduces us into forsaking the ordinary. Even as believers, we are prone to aspire to do sexy ministry that garners headlines and warrants photo ops. But Shannan Martin helps us resist these impulses by calling the body to reclaim the sanctity and significance of ordinary places. Through personal stories, theology, and Scripture, she helps us descern God's call upon our lives right where we are and illuminates why the most faithful ministry is oftentimes mundale, overlooking, and seemingly unimpressive. This book will help you thrive in your faith in practical and rooted ways!' - Dominique DuBoise, author of Rethinking Incarceration: Advocating for Justice that Restores'Sometimes when reading a book, I'll think 'I'll recommend this to that group' or 'this one goes to that community,' but hand to heaven, I would put this book in every single pair of hands across ideology, camps, and tribes. Part storytelling, part prophetic, with dizzyingly wonderful writing, Shannan brings us back to the neighborhood, back to ordinary tables, back to a life we know in our deepest hearts is meant for us. I love her. I love this book.' - Jen Hatmaker, New York Times bestselling author of 7, For the Love, and Of Mess and Moxie''I was terrified of being ordinary', and with that one sentence Shannan Martin sums up every single one of us. Certainly me. And then she deconstructs the cliche of orindary and puts it back together with pictures and stories and sidewalks full of people who will make you want to cry or singy or despair or dance or rail or just quietly whisper, amen. This book is a new pair of eyes. Go ahead, open them!'- Lisa-Jo Baker, bestselling author of Never Unfriended and Surprised by Motherhood'Photographers often talk about the 'golden hour' of each day- the hour just before the sun slips beyond the horizon. The light, they tell us, is perfect, then. You've probably seen it? All of everything around us seems to glow with the murmur of heaven- the streetlights, the grafitti on the walls, the rainbow'd puddles of oil-slicked water and the golden heads of wheat that bow to a gentle breeze. In these pages, Shannan Martin places a gentle hand on our shoulder and whispers quiet and profound words of truth, telling us the golden hour is here--right now-- with these people in this place at this moment. Now. Heaven is all around us, and this book invites us, as only Shannan can do, to awaken to a life where every ordinary moment shimmers with gold.' - Diedra Riggs, author, speaker, disco-lover'In a world where hope seems dim and solutions feel complicated and partisan, Shannan Martin offers us a starting point that is as radical as it is domestic; widen your circle, hush your mouth, and pay close attention. This book is the right book for this moment in time and I simply cannot get over it. I either laughed or cried on almost every page. We need these lyrical, prophetic words now more than ever before.' - Emily P. Freeman, Wall Street Journal bestselling author of Simply Tuesday'Through ordinary stories of mustard seeds, lost coins, and surly prodigals, Jesus taught that the kingdom of God has come near and we are called to be its ambassadors in our everyday lives. In the tradition of Jesus and all his best storytellers, Shannan uses her ordinary, beautiful, oh-so-relatable life to show us that we are called to embody the love of God in our communities that God has equipped us with everything we need to be ministers right where we are. Full of grace, humor, and kindness, Shannan makes you believe that your voice, your gifts, your perspective are so needed to help mend our broken world, proclaiming that yes, even now, the kingdom of God has come near.' - Osheta Moore, author of Shalom Sistas'The Ministry of Ordinary Places tears down the high and mighty calling we've often conjured in our minds about how the faithful serve God and instead invites us to see a sacred call in the faces of our neighbors, to smell the holy incense in ashtrays fulled with crooked cigarette butts, or to see the broken bread set before us in a Burger King table for two. Shannan challenges who our neighbor is then offers a glimpse of what it might look like to stay put, stick around, and find that our best life is one where we simply pay attention to that common ache to be known and seen and lvoed, just as we are. in a book that's both challenging and down to earth, she leads us into a theology of ordinary places, of neighborliness, secondhand smoke, and the holy ground of discovernig our way home is always together.' - Alia Joy, author of Glorious Weakness: Discovering God in All We Lack'Shannan's brilliance and grace invites us into the narrow way of Jesus, a path beyond walls, borders, and fences. God met me in fresh and unexpected ways through this book, and I believe He'll do the same for you.' - Rebekah Lyons, author of You Are Free and Freefall to Fly

I would never want to negatively critique an author because I know the process. It is difficult to find your voice, find an agent, wait for the book to sell to a publisher, write the dang thing, and then market it.But I'm struggling...I started the book last night. It was late and I was tired, so maybe that was the problem. I was frustrated because I couldn't ground myself in the story. The author shares a little bit about how how she lived in the country but now she lives in the city. Her husband worked for a conservative entity, and had troubles with a person who came in with more liberal views.Somehow they end up in the city, and somehow they become friends with this lady. But I don't know exactly how that happened.I guess what is missing for me is what Brene Brown calls "the rumble." Things turn out, but I can't seem to figure out the tangible process of how that happens.Based on authors who recommended this book I was waiting for the funny stories and the specific details of how Martin got close to her neighbors. So far I haven't found that.I'm about a third of the way through the book and maybe it will make more sense today. The writing is lyrical, and beautiful, in the style of Ann Voskamp, but the combination of lyrical plus the missing rumble (the tangible process of how things changed), it's making this book an effort to read.However. I wish the author well, and I can see from the reviews lots of folks like it.

After growing up in a conservative, Christian environment where a vast emphasis is placed on your "ministry", there have been many times as an adult where I have felt as though I fall short. I don't have a popular blog, or lead a Bible study, or run a youth group, or do any of the things I traditionally learned were "ministry" things to do.Shannan Martin's book gives readers a revolutionary concept - your ministry doesn't have to be big and loud and in public. For most of us, the ministry we have been given is in our own neighborhood, our own carpool line, our own home. We do God's work by being present with the people He has placed in our lives. This is a compelling and challenging read, and I'm so thankful Martin's words are in my world.

I'm a very picky reader and reviewer, and there were so many things that made me want to give this book 5 stars. Here are a few:- The author is authentic. For real. She admits her fears, shortcomings, do-overs and vulnerable moments.- The author is humble. There are other writers who have a similar style, but yet Martin doesn't contain the same tone of narcissism that some other authors in her genre have. I love this about her writing!- Martin isn't afraid to step on the toes of tradition. The "us" and "them" of churchy outreach is gone and everyone is welcome - inmates, addicts, wayward children and people labeled by society as outcasts, and everyone in between.- The style of writing contains a blend of humor, creativity and an unusual ways of describing everyday life. So much creativity the the descriptions! It was refreshing.- Martin demonstrates a genuine heart to make every moment into ministry. The stories she tells in the book demonstrate a true ministry heart for broken people who need love, truth and grace. There are so many right on her street, and she has made it her mission field. I think we all have just as many people who need hope on our own streets.- This is a Christian book without a bit of preachiness in the tone. After reading the book, I want to know Shannan Martin more. I wish she was in my neighborhood and my church! I want to be part of her ministry work! I recommend this book for every person who needs a wake-up call. If you're feeling stuck, complacent, and out of touch with truly broken people, this book will be the live-by-example roadmap to a place where God can do big things in everyday life. Here are a few great quotes:"If I could require fieldwork for each of you (and I supposed I can, because, honestly, who is going to stop me?), it would be to find a way to regular break bread with the most random, regular people you can find. They're everywhere, once you make a habit of searching.""Our tendency to group ourselves according to shared demographics has caused us to miss the most important one: a longing to be known just as we are, in all our rumpled-jeans, misbehaving-kids, tired-eyes non-glory."

I’ve been so encouraged and challenged by reading THE MINISTRY OF ORDINARY PLACES, and I know you will be, too. In today’s culture, where we are encouraged to abandon the ordinary in search of the special, the expensive, the respected, THE MINISTRY OF ORDINARY PLACES is so refreshing. In this book, Shannan Martin paints a beautiful (but real) picture of what happens when we decide to embrace the ordinary that is already around us. The whole book is genuine and frank, and contains major truth. I was especially struck by the chapter discussing the importance of learning to simply listen. Shannan closes it with this: “Go there. Sit down. Lean in. Resist the urge to posture or interject. Listen without an agenda. Just wait and see where it takes you.” Isn’t this really all we want others to do for us? Yet it’s so hard to do for others. I know I need this reminder! I also greatly appreciated the discussion of how to love “the least of these.” So often we view it as a one-way street of giving, with donations and programs and measures of “success,” but as Shannan points out, the most impactful thing we can do is build real, reciprocal relationships. Instead of seeing people as projects, or there to be “loved on,” what if we just focus on getting to know those around us, no matter who they are? What if we truly consider all people our equals and our friends, instead of thinking they need to be pitied and assisted and saved? This would change the world! This book has really encouraged me to step out and put in the work to build genuine relationships with the community right around me, and I can’t wait to see what happens!

My four and a half year old son is in love with whales right now. In particular he wants to see pictures of whales. We got him this book for Christmas as a part of a whale themed package and I have to say it's great. There are lots of pictures and because it's geared for a young reader it a fairly short book so we are able to read it to him. I will note however that this book it only about sperm whales which worked great for us since he's interested in learning about all whales. However, if you are looking for a book that covers multiple types of whales you may want to keep on looking.

When you hear your kid come to you and marvel about how deep the whale can dive, you know you bought the right book. This book is informative and filled with many good pictures of different kind of whales. Not just my boy, I like this book too!

Being an ex children's librarian, I find reluctant reader's especially boys gravitate to these non fiction books, great for sight reading, I have my kids say all the words on the page they know then we highlight them and peace them together. There are many little people boys as well as girls that greatly benefit from non fiction books geared toward them and the subjects they love.

This is a great book for teaching the way animals move or what they do in winter!

I love all of the National Geographic Kids books! The text, maps, charts, information, and pictures are all so beautiful! This particular one- Whales, is fabulous! I have to credit this series for helping my students move on from 4 and 5-letter words to sounding out trickier words.

We've bought a number of these to introduce our 3 year old daughter to non-fiction writing. The dolphins and sea turtles books are level 2, they're complex concepts but with mom or dad to help explain and discuss things while reading them to her its fine. This one however deals with the concept of migration, which even with mom and dad helping she just doesn't grasp. Its not the language thats the problem, but the concepts. Will be good when she's older.

Never get enough about whales and my students loved it!

Great for a little marine lover!

Jazz Day: The Making of a Famous Photograph, by Roxane Orgill Francis Vallejo

From School Library Journal

Gr 4 Up—A collection of poetry that focuses on the day graphic designer Art Kane orchestrated the iconic 1958 photograph of American jazz greats on a stoop in Harlem. Though many may recognize the photograph, fewer will know the story of its creation. While working on a special issue of Esquire magazine dedicated to jazz, Kane decided to see how many musicians he could gather in one place. The book starts on the morning the photograph was taken, with Kane standing in the street he's closed for the occasion, nervously hoping his call for appearances will be heeded. The verse spotlights the cast of characters that slowly materializes, with some short biographic poems and even one about Count Basie's hat. The offerings lead up to a foldout spread of the photograph itself, cued by a black page with the word click in white print. The remaining selections address the issue's immediate reception and laud Kane's accomplishment. The text is accompanied by vibrant, spectacular acrylic and pastel paintings by debut illustrator Vallejo. The volume includes an introduction, a lengthy author's note (with a useful key to the photograph), and short biographies of the major players. VERDICT A rich, unique, playful, and masterfully orchestrated work; Kane himself would undoubtedly be proud.—Jill Heritage Maza, Montclair Kimberley Academy, Montclair, NJ

Review

When readers eventually open a foldout page to see the photograph, the moment is magic—alive with the presence and skill of the musicians, as well as the promise and potential of the children around them. Beyond being a glorious tribute to these jazz greats, the book is also a phenomenal debut for Vallejo, whose dynamic acrylic and pastel images bring readers into the heart of the action of a day like no other.—Publishers Weekly (starred review)Vallejo's acrylic-and-pastel paintings vividly capture the shoot's vignettes and the skittish excitement of neighborhood kids. Pulling details from a 1995 documentary film and other resources, Orgill and Vallejo offer a dynamic, multifaceted work that deftly juxtaposes biography with praise poem, information with imagination. Teachers, librarians, jazz-loving families: take note.—Kirkus Reviews (starred review)A rich, unique, playful, and masterfully orchestrated work; Kane himself would undoubtedly be proud.—School Library Journal (starred review)The poems vary in form and mood from an alphabetical acrostic of clothing to a pantoum in the voice of the young and awestruck drummer Eddie Locke. The rhythms are contagious. Saxophonist Lester Young’s porkpie hat: “Roll the crown halfway down all around— / that’s called ‘busting it down.’ / Turn it over and poke out the pit just a bit, / ‘bringing the lid back home.’” The words take you back to the photo—reproduced here as a gatefold spread, and placed in the perfect dramatic spot—and the excellent list of sources leads you back to the music. An inspiring example of art that arises from the simple question, “What did you notice in the picture?”—The Horn Book (starred review)Orgill, who has written about jazz for adults (and Ella Fitzgerald for children) is here paired with artist Vallejo, a welcome newcomer to the world of picture books, and they offer a memorable ode to a time and place, a celebration of music that was both hot and cool, and an endearing snapshot of the men and women who wrote, played, and sang jazz. Kane’s photograph, “Harlem, 1958,” is here immortalized in Orgill’s poetry, which swings and sways, and Vallejo’s vibrant artwork, which captures not just the players but the mood on 126th Street where the photo shoot took place.—Booklist (starred review)Kids indifferent to jazz or photography will be swept up nonetheless in the novelty of the episode, the idiosyncrasies of the participants, and the shoulder-rubbing between the neighborhood kids and the adult celebs. Vallejo’s mixed-media illustrations are gems of freewheeling portraiture, drawing from the iconic photo itself and other film taken throughout the day. Orgill supplies biographical info on Art Kane and the musicians highlighted in her poems, and best of all, a double-page photo reproduction folds out at just the right moment from an asphalt black page with a single “‹ click.” Perfect.—Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books (starred review)Together Orgill and Vallejo have created a rich cultural history that while detailing the process of making the photograph — including the antics of those boys — honors the jazz artists who light up the image. The addition of musicians’ biographies, a valuable bibliography, and an elegant fold-out reproduction of the original photograph make “Jazz Day” both a celebration of an era and a valuable, vibrant resource, one that you should flip through with the volume turned up.—The Boston GlobeLittle did they know that the photograph — featuring 57 musicians and a group of neighborhood kids — would become legendary. Roxane Orgill’s dazzling Jazz Day: The Making of a Famous Photograph (Candlewick, Ages 7 – 11) tells how this celebrated image came to be...Francis Vallejo’s striking acrylic-and-pastel illustrations offer similarly unexpected perspectives on streetscapes, nattily dressed musicians and interested onlookers.—The Washington PostIn lively verse “Jazz Day” tells the stories behind the making of a famous 1958 photograph of jazz legends.—The Boston GlobeIf you want a kid to get excited about music, this book is a terrific platform.—San Francisco Classical VoiceThe gorgeous acrylic and pastel art illustrations perfectly capture the joyful chaos of the event.—Buffalo News

What a delightful background piece on an iconic, inspired photo! It takes into account the humanity of everyone involved in the making of history, not just some of the greatest musicians of the 20th Century (or ever), but the people of the neighborhood, and the photographer too. The artwork is simultaneously stunningly beautiful and brutally realistic. I would recommend this book for any child who loves music, as well as any adult who loves jazz.

This is a wonderful discussion book and something I find of interest to all grade levels. It is also a wonderful way to begin discussion of some of these jazz greats as well as a clever way to encourage writing especially poetry. I really like the poems featuring the thoughts of some of the kids in the photo. You could assign students to write about what others may be thinking.

Legendary illustrations and fascinating reprisal of a special day in jazz photography. Fun stuff!

Beautiful book with amazing historical detail. A must for any jazz fan.

Knowing what was going on the day this picture was taken gives me more insight of all that was going on. The poetic form that was used give me a joyfulness to read.

This is a wonderful telling of the story behind an iconic photograph of jazz musicians, taken in Harlem by Art Kane in 1958.The illustrations paint the rhythms of that day, and the prose/rhyme narration describes some of the participants and their place in the history of that photograph. It is an intriguing book for the curious child in all of us.

This book was just fantastic. It was well written and beautifully worded. But the illustrations blew me away! The pictures just made you feel the emotions of such a historic day. Highly recommend this one!

The perfect picture book for ALL ages. Read the poetry and hear the jazz. Gifted author.

I used the Rigos series of UBE reviewers exclusively for the New York UBE and passed it. The materials are comprehensive, easy-to-read, and includes a "meta" guide on how to use their reviewers, how to manage your review time, and other useful pointers. I was worried about not "buying enough" into the whole bar review game with all the fancy lectures and apps, but I'm glad I did not spend a penny more. It all boils down to managing one's time, using the materials that you have effectively, and mastering the very core of the UBE which is in just a series of LONG but simple, brightline rules.

This text is amazing. Seriously... My stress level went from 9 to 5 after reviewing the family law section and nailed every issue on my essay exam. (Yes, that's a big deal for me as more stress = less retention of info). It's not time for me to start my full on bar prep course, but I wanted something to refresh my memory while I wait. I've lost so much of the details over the past 3 years from 1L and 2L courses like Torts, Contracts, Con Law, etc.. Rigos very nicely condenses the info, doesn't use overly long explanations, but still provides enough context that flashcards can not. This doesn't overload your brain like BarBri's materials which I've tried before... I paid $250+ for BarBri 1 and 2L online review texts & lectures. BarBri appears more concerned about not allowing you to copy or print anything out, because you can only view one very poorly formatted page a time (as opposed to an easy to navigate scrolling format). Searching and using the index is a joke. I spent more time searching for the content I needed than actually studying. With Rigos, the indexes and magic memory outlines are fantastic - run through the memory outline and if you can't recall the info, easily flip to that section and give yourself a reminder. Use the acronyms they provide if needed, but those are totally optional and not distracting. Then take a few essay exam questions and use the example answers to find out if you hit all the issues or not. (Full disclosure - some people LOVE the long explanations and greater context that BarBri provides - I'm just not one of those people.) I'm absolutely buying the MBE Volumes as well, now that I see how well Rigos works for me..

First, in the CivPro section, one of the answers states that a plaintiff can maintain a diversity suit because the damages was “at least” 75,000. Every law student and lawyer knows that it must “exceed” 75,000. Even the FRCP uses “exceeds”.Second, the statements of law for ConLaw are partial and not complete. For instance, the intermediate standard of review requires the law be substantially related to an important governmental interest and the rational basis review requires the law be rationally related to a legitimate interest. The book omits substantially related and rationally related.Third, if an MEE subject is also an MBE subject, then that outline is not in this book. You have to buy the MBE volumes 1 and 2 for those subjects. This was not mentioned on the amazon page.Update:Review of the Family Law outline has revealed more inaccurate statements of the law:The book states that a valid premarital agreement is:"...full disclosure of all the spouses' assets and liabilities, reasonable opportunity for both parties to seek independent counsel, and the parties must be acting in good faith without fraud or coercion."While some of this is correct, it is worded incorrectly, used out of context, uses words not used in the official model answer, and is still missing important elements. From the NCBE:"...such agreements are enforceable unless procured by fraud, duress, or coercion. A premarital agreement must be in writing and signed by both parties. A premarital agreement is not enforceable if the spouse whom enforcement is sought proves that (a) the agreement was made involuntarily, OR (b) it was unconscionable when executed and before execution the spouse was (i) not provided fair disclosure of financial information, (ii) did not waive disclosure, and (iii) did not have knowledge of such information. Elements that courts will look to for voluntariness is (1) presence of independent legal counsel, (2) length of the time between the date of the agreement and the wedding, (3) the party's abilities to understand the agreement, and (4) other reasons"While much longer, this statement is accurate and complete. The statement from the Rigos book lacks voluntariness, which was tested on the Feb 2016 MEE. So, you would have gotten the wrong answer if you had followed the Rigos statement. The Rigos statement lacks unconscionable, waiver, and the fact that independent counsel is part of voluntariness. Also, a premarital agreement does not require "full" disclosure nor does it require "good faith".

I previously sat and passed the Bar exam in a non-UBE state. However, I wanted to practice in another Jx so I prepared for, and passed the July 2016 UBE exam with a 288.To prepare: I used my commercial bar review course books from my first Bar exam study, along with this Rigos book, its MPT book, the Critical-Pass Flash Cards and the Strategy and Tactics for the MBE 5th Ed. (All of which I would recommend)The Rigos MEE book provides a concise and easy to understand nutshell summary of the MEE topics along with practice essays and answers. I highly recommend this as a SUPPLEMENT for a student who already has a base knowledge of the MEE and MBE materials. I would caution against using this book as a primary book due to its abridged nature (yes 566 pages is abridged in the realm of Bar studying).

Used this book to prepare for the July 2017 MBE after 2 previous attempts. I found this to be very helpful. I got quite a few nuggets. There are at least 200 skills building and practice questions for each subject (232 for Contracts) with varying degrees of difficulty. Quite a few have very long fact patterns (especially Civ Pro), but they build concentration stamina. There were a few questions which were very similar to the questions I encountered on the 2017 Exam. Rigos' material comes in Volume 1 and 2; please take note. My scored 146, an increase of 14 points from the February exam, and 13 points from the July 2016 exam. I also used Strategies and Tactics by Emanuel, and I found it to be good. I had also used this book for the February exam.
