This story is so overwhelming that reviewing it as a book is not feasible because this is not a book. It is a story told extraordinarily well and presents many lessens, one of the most interesting being the value of a religion, including those whose foundation and practices many would find strange. The author is a true hero whose life after her capture by ISIS would not be something anyone would wish on their worst enemy. Some stories are so sad they are hard to read. There is nothing hard about reading this very sad but ultimately uplifting journal.

I read this thanks to the recommendation of a friend and am embarrassed I did not previously know more about the Yazidi genocide in Iraq. I would highly encourage everyone to read this honest and well-written account. In addition to the horror of enduring ISIS, the author also shares the rich and tight-knit Yazidi culture with her reader.

There are sunny people who say things like "There's goodness in everyone!" and encourage us all to share in their oblivious view of humanity. When you encounter those people, tell them to get their heads out of the sand and hand them a copy of this book. The evil men and women that this brave young woman encountered--they did it in the name of religion. Religious fervor and belief in a "God" seem to be the main source of evil in this world. This book expresses that truth.

This is a powerful story to understand and for civilized people to face. Rape is now a weapon commonly used systematically in war and needs to be addressed as strongly as "Weapons of Mass Destruction" I bought this book to support a person who needs to tell others what she survived. It provided many more insights than expected and I hope to support whatever organization she decides to work in.

Nadia is smart, kind, thoughtful, beautiful, generous, funny, loving, patient, joyful, good, faithful, and pure of heart. She is proud to be Yazidi, and rightfully so. And everyone, no matter their faith, who seeks to be a person of deep character and integrity will do well to imitate Nadia. She is an amazing human being and this, her story, is a powerful story of good overcoming evil. I love you Nadia. And everyone who reads this book will love you. May ISIS be brought to justice and may God shower grace and mercy on all Yazidis.

Nadia Murad is an amazing survivor. She describes in detail her life, her family, her religion and her village in great detail prior to the coming of ISIS, without being maudlin or weepy. And when ISIS comes, she details their deadly methods, their terrible interpretations of the Koran, and their beastly attitudes towards women and, frankly, all non-ISIS members. The language is clear, the moments of horror are told with decorum and not sensationalized. How does one describe rape? How difficult it must have been for her to tell her story. If you want to know what it was truly like under ISIS, this is an excellent book. That she survived and is a leader seeking the return of her family, village and people to their homelands is - noble. Highly recommend this book.

The Last Girl will stay in my memory forever. Nadia’s experience is profoundly horrific, sad and troubling. She is a powerful hero in the Iraqi and Yazidi war against ISIS. I couldn’t put this book down. I loved it and so admire the author.

This true-life tale is a first-person account of escaping genocide and sexual slavery. It is written by a Yazidi survivor and is a gripping story of what we only heard shreds of a few years ago. It's well-written.If you've ever felt moved to activism, this book will make you want to add your voice against religious and political terrorism.

The Greatest Generation Speaks: Letters and Reflections, by Tom Brokaw

Amazon.com Review

The popularity and credibility of charismatic news anchor Tom Brokaw ensured bestseller status for The Greatest Generation, Brokaw's homage to the Americans who survived and overcame the depression and World War II. The Greatest Generation Speaks expands his thesis that we owe a huge debt of gratitude to those tough and courageous men and women for ensuring the freedoms and comforts that Americans enjoy today. Their stories, culled from letters, interviews, and personal histories of the Greatest Generation and their family members, are anecdotal but extremely powerful, showing how men and women were sustained by simple ideals of patriotism, family, and fair play. This individualistic portrait is exactly how Americans saw themselves: Brokaw's book is a valid reflection of the times. During a period of economic hardship and in a country united by the war effort, choices were simple; few people questioned why America was fighting Germany and Japan. Adversity brought out the best, especially in an optimistic culture like America's. As the soldier who found Beethoven's pianos in a Weimar house says after his unit is shelled, "Nothing like a close call to make the morning more beautiful." The greatest impression that war veterans seem to carry back from war is a sense of comradeship that, in spite of pain and loss, render their war years the most rewarding of all their life experiences. Modern life doesn't necessarily have the same certainties. The Greatest Generation Speaks is a healthy reminder of the foundations on which American society is built. --John Stevenson

From Publishers Weekly

Brokaw's TV anchorman voice is deep and reassuring, with a remarkable air of patriarchal authority. With so much puff-chested attitude, he launches into this tape's introduction, explaining that the letters and comments contained came to him in a responsive outpouring in reaction to his book The Greatest Generation, which chronicled the varied experiences of World War II veterans. For him, these missives expressed a shared sense of "values," since lost in American life. The material itself is far less posturing, mostly clear-eyed remembrances from former soldiers, medics, clergy and reporters who served in Europe and Asia. From the home front come stories from women munitions workers, war widows and war orphans. Finally, the author tells of making efforts to reunite parties long-ago separated by tragic events. Here, the matters described move vividly into the present, giving the program a sense of real drama and pathos. Based on the 1999 Random hardcover. (Dec.) I remember these stories as I grew up during this time . I was 10 yrs old at the end of the war. My mom, dad, uncles ,cousins , friends were all involved. My parents would go to the main highway in town and pick up G.I. hitch hikers and bring them home for some of my mom's home cooking. They would ,sometimes stay over night, and then the folks would take them toward their destination as far as our gas stamp allowance would allow. I did not see this kind of love of country when I came home from Viet Nam . I am sadden at our ," What is in it for me " attitude that prevails . Great stories and only wish we had that kind of spirit and love of the USA today .

It is infrequent that I stop my children and make them listen to me read from my personal reading books. We school our children at home. Home for us is the town of Entebbe in Uganda where my children have grown up as expats thus have had a disconnect from their country of origin. That said this book compelled me to share my own thoughts of admiration and gratitude with them so they too could feel connected to these heroes of our past. Often all they hear is MSN and Facebook chatter so this book starting some thought provoking conversations on the growth and sometimes decline of generations of Americans was wonderful. We discussed topics like racism, patriotism, internment camps, nuclear bombs, community service, honor, and sacrifice. Any book that can engage teens and parents in genuine dialogue about things that really matter is worth five stars.

Mr. Broken has captured the lives of all of the people in his book and brought them to the forefront for the current generation. It was a pleasure and an honor to read stories of courage and valor, both on the battlefield and in their future lives. This should be assigned reading for all American History courses as The Greatest Generation is slowly losing its members. My greatest honor was to be a guardian for the Honor Flight for WWII veterans to the WWII Memorial in Washington D.C. The stories I heard during the flight were both humorous and tragic. Senator Robert Dole, one of the person's in the book was present to meet veterans as they arrived by bus to the memorial. This was great book, well written and very interesting.

Being a child of one of a member of the greatest generation this book gave me a better appreciation of all of that generation and what they did. There is nothing we can do to repay them for all the sacrifices that were made to ensure our freedom. It is so true that they never spoke about the war, my Dad never did. It was only after his passing did I discover from his military documents and newspaper clippings what transpired. I knew he had been wounded but nothing of the role he played. This book filled in all the gaps. Thank you Tom Brokaw for telling the story.

This was a fantastic read about a generation that is sadly soon to be gone from this earth, but certainly never forgotten. This book tells the story of many individuals who served their country, on and off, the battlefield. The overall message being a generation that gave everything, and expected nothing in return. I recommend this book for anyone who enjoys history, and who admires tireless ambition, civic pride, and for those who simp!y care to learn the very values and attributes that brought about the best moments of the 20th century in The United States of America.

I first read Mr. Brokaw's sequel to this book--THE GREATEST GENERATION SPEAKS--and appreciated it so much that I really wanted toread his first book. So I ordered it from Amazon and am so glad I did. It is a wonderful testimony to the American way of life that did so muchfor our country and our people. We've lost that way of life, unfortunately, so I want to have this book to share with others, who can learn from itand live their lives better because of it.

This is the best and most meaningful book I have ever read. It captures a true sense of the struggles and unification of America during WWII. I am 42 years old and recall many stories as a child told by my grandparents and parents that mirror the struggles outlined in this book. Several in my family served in the military, including WWII, and I appreciate them so much more after reading this book. We take so much for granted today. I feel every generation, especially Millennials and Gen Z, can benefit greatly from reading this book. It will be a must read for my children when they are of an age to better understand and appreciate the information found in the book.

The author did a beautiful job of exploring the effects of WWII and how our fathers and uncles brothers and friends dealt with the effects. I was born during the War,but, had older sisters with friends that left to fights. And, not all returned. But, remember finding ration books, and leg makeup that they used. It was all very mysterious to me and had many questions. Reading the book made every question I asked much clearer.
