This book WILL change everything you believe in the afterlife! This a MUST READ book for people who wants to know our destinations right after this life. This book will restore your faith not only in humanity in general but to the Supreme Being and WHY's why we're all here. I used to be a very cynical people and a Fatalist view at that but after reading this book? My overall perspectives in this life completely changed thanks to Ms. betty J. Eadie and what she went through. I have always believed in a Higher power but now I'm assured on how that Supreme Divine Being ALL LOVED US regardless if we succeed in this life or not. This book will give you hope and the reasons WHY bad things happen to good people and why our sufferings has actually have meaning and lessons associated with them. "In order for you to be good? First, you MUST be kind. In order for you to be kind? You MUST KNOW suffering"- an Immortal quote and living testimony from someone very dear to my heart and makes me cry every time and nothing but the truth. I just cant tell all the stuff I have learned by reading this book WITHOUT spoiling it for you so it's better for you to read this book with an Open Mind specially when there's a Holy Bible around for it will open MORE doors of understandings. PLEASE don't delay this for your personal salvation is found in this book. This book WILL change your life....It DID mine. :)

This book helped ease the pain of loosing a loved one. I've read this book several times and I can't say enough about it. The first time I read it twice. The next time I had lost my father, cousin, aunt, sister and my pet of 10 years all within 1 year, and the last time I lost my niece, aunt, cousin, my best friend of 30 years, and my other niece had cancer - all in 6 months. I'm not having a pity party I just wanted to explain why I read the book so many times - it really helped me with my struggle. I was raised Catholic and the teachings about death never made sense to me. After I read this book the first time I said "Now that's the way I always thought it should be". If you're struggling - read the book - it will lessen your pain. It's not religious - it's just a good book.

A confused Native American Mormon writer. She provides no documentation of actual death. If this story is true, it would be great - save for the fact that even in “heaven” men are in charge and women have different roles due to their “sensitivity”. Do we even experience gender in Spirit? The author states with confidence that there is no reincarnation. Many religions and Mystics disagree. There is more documentation in support of reincarnation than the author’s so called death for 4 hours.

When this book first came out after reading it twice (I always have to read twice to fully appreciate), I read the book within a few days and realized that many people I know could use this book almost as a self help type book and found it so inspirational that the following Christmas I purchased 5 of them to give as gifts. When it. And out in paper I ordered 10 more to handout as I saw fit and have to say most of the people I have it to also found it as inspiring As I did.

My comments on “Embraced By The Light” by Betty Eadie:My path to God is one of a million or more other possible paths. And so is Betty’s path as well. Her path becomes more visible in her description of her Near-Death Experience (NDE). It also shows its unique character. That character also shows us more about her believes, convictions, biases and some of the way she deals with her problems. What stands out are the unprecedented amount of detail in her account, in earthly terms. In my many readings of NDE’s, I have never come across a more detailed account. It tallies well with all other accounts that I have studied, all of which are different and unique but share all major elements of an NDE, the most prevalent being the experience and non-verbal expression of the most encompassing and most powerful element called LOVE, overshadowing all others. Despite the differences between my and Betty’s believes, biases, and convictions, I find her account to be utterly honest and sincere!

This book received some controversy back in the 80's or 90's. The story is that many who read it ended up preaching it's contents at church. Since this book is Betty's personal experience, it was never a good idea to preach it at church like it's doctrine - or even to personally endorse everything in it. This is an awesome book and I see it as food for thought or more data points in my research of what lies beyond this life. I would recommend reading it and just mulling over the info for your own personal gain. To preach it like it's new scripture is probably not the best idea. That goes for any NDE book. This is why most people who have had NDE's shy away from writing about it. It's personal and the general public will scrutinize it or wholly endorse it when they shouldn't. It's meant to just give us more data points in our search for knowledge. Some info may be spot on and other info may be meant symbolical and not real at all. Read this book with that in mind. I do recommend it though. This is a very good book!

Wonderful book. Great details about Betty's experiences in the the higher worlds of heaven, our true home. It gave me much hope and comfort that all of us will be going home after we finally shed our physical bodies. Our lives on earth are incredibly short and are just a school to learn lessons that only can be learned while in a physical body on earth. And that heaven is real and is an unimaginable place of beauty, bliss, adventure and awe that words just can't describe. That we are all going there as soul - sinners, saints, drunks, bums, rich and powerful people, religious people, spiritual people, atheists, criminals, etc. the only ones that judge us there are ourselves. There is no hell; no place of eternal damnation; what a relief! The best thing and really the only things that really matter here are that we love others unconditionally, kindness to others, and our good deeds as in helping others.

Most people see the bankruptcy of the Lehman Brothers investment bank on September 15, 2008 as the event that turned a more or less normal recession into the Great Recession. Why didn't the Federal Reserve loan Lehman the funds that would have allowed the firm to survive long enough to gradually unwind its investments, find another financial firm to sell itself to, or, possibly, even survive long-term as an independent firm?Central banks were established to make loans to banks having liquidity problems. Banks are inherently illiquid because they borrow short term and lend long term. With commercial banks, the short-term borrowing mostly takes the form of deposits. Investment banks like Lehman borrowed short term by executing repurchase agreements (repos) with other financial firms. Repos are essentially overnight loans collateralized by securities such as Treasury bills. For decades, the Fed had been comfortable in its role of lender of last resort to commercials banks experiencing short-term liquidity problems caused by deposit withdrawals. In March 2008, as the repo market was experiencing problems, the Fed set up the Primary Dealer Credit Facility (PDCF) to also provide liquidity to investment banks. But Fed officials interpreted the Federal Reserve Act as requiring that loans the Fed made through the PDCF have sufficient collateral to make repayment likely. So why did Fed Chair Ben Benanke and colleagues allow Lehman to fail rather than make the loans that would have allowed the firm to deal with its liquidity problems? The party line has been that Lehman lacked sufficient collateral, which left the Fed's hands tied. Bernanke has made this point multiple times in the years since 2008; arguing that legally the Fed could not make the loans that would have saved Lehman. He also claims that he was fully aware that the failure of Lehman would be catastrophic for the financial system and the economy.Laurence Ball argues -- not to put too fine a point on it -- that Bernanke is lying. Ball marshals considerable evidence to show that Lehman easily had sufficient collateral to back the loans it needed to survive, at least long enough to gradually unwind its investments. He also shows that at that time Fed officials never discussed the possibility that they lacked the legal authority to make the loans. Amazingly enough, Ball also shows that Bernanke was barely involved in the final decision to let Lehman fail. He also argues that neither Bernanke nor other Fed officials realized how big a blow to the financial system Lehman's failure would be, despite their later statements to the contrary. In Ball's telling, the decision to let Lehman fail -- actually, to actively push the firm into bankruptcy -- was made by Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson. Legally, it was strictly the Fed's decision whether or not to make the necessary loans. But through force of personality, Paulson took charge of the negotiations and made the key decisions. After the Treasury and Fed had taken action the previous spring to underwrite J.P. Morgan Chase's purchase of the Bear Sterns investment bank -- thereby saving Bear from bankruptcy -- Paulson had come under fierce public criticism. He told Fed officials that he refused to become known as Mr. Bailout by taking action to save Lehman. If Lehman was to survive, other financial firms would have to save it.Ball tells an amazing tale, which, if it becomes widely accepted, will deal a heavy blow to Bernanke's reputation. It will be interesting to see if Bernanke, Paulson, or other Fed officials respond. Ball's evidence seems overwhelming, so I have a feeling none of those folks will attempt to dispute his conclusions. The book is largely non-technical; Ball explains simply and clearly the financial basics necessary to understand his argument. He writes well and the book is a fast read. If I have one complaint, it's that he doesn't appear to have made much attempt to interview any of the many people he writes about. Nearly his entire argument is based on publicly available documents. He does say that "half a dozen people with first-hand knowledge" spoke to him, but only off the record. Ball is an academic, not a journalist, so perhaps it's unsurprising that he apparently didn't attempt to get a response from the main players.Still, that's a nitpick because this is a compelling book. The financial crisis is the most significant economic event in the lives of most Americans. I would think that many readers will want to know the truth behind its key event. I hope this book gains a wide readership.

Johns Hopkins economics professor Laurence Ball has written an extraordinarily well-researched book on the demise of Lehman Brothers. At the very least he seriously questions the official response to the Lehman bankruptcy which states that Lehman was insolvent and lacked adequate collateral on September 15, 2008 and at maximum he completely debunks the Fed and the Treasury. Although I am not in the complete debunking camp, Ball has certainly changed my views on the subject.Specifically Ball calculates that Lehman was borderline solvent at the time of the bankruptcy filing. In my own view based on Ball’s numbers I would have them more in the insolvent category because of the way Ball values Lehman’s Level 2 assets. Be that as it may, Ball is convincing when he argues that Lehman had sufficient collateral for a loan under the Primary Dealer Credit Facility (PDCF) at the time of the filing and it certainly had the collateral when the requirements were eased two days later. Ball cogently argues that Maiden Lane rescue of Bear Stearns and the subsequent AIG rescue were far more risky for the Fed than a short-term loan to Lehman would have been. Then why didn’t the Fed at least temporarily bail out Lehman. To Ball it was pure politics with Treasury Secretary Hank Paulson leading the charge against any hint of a bailout. Put simply a Lehman bailout was viewed as politically toxic. And in fact, the consequences of letting Lehman go allowed the Congress to go forward with TARP and for the Fed to open the floodgate of cash under Section 13(3) of the Federal Reserve Act. A year later New York Times columnist wrote “Lehman Had to Die, So Global Finance Could Live” (September 11, 2009). Put bluntly the chicken had to die.Ball argues that if the Fed intervened and kept Lehman alive, at least temporarily, the deluge that followed would have been averted. Here I respectfully disagree. AIG was already a goner and the markets would have immediately turned their attention to the severe problems at Morgan Stanley and Citigroup. Clearly stated, there were too many toxic assets awash in the system. All bailing out Lehman would have done would have been to delay the inevitable, which in my mind would have been far worse.Ball’s encyclopedic sources include all of Lehman’s SEC filings, the Valukas report, testimony before the Financial Crisis Inquiry Commission, the books by Bernanke, Paulson and Geithner and Andrew Ross Sorkin’s “Too Big To Fail.” One failing is that he should have talked to Lehman’s CEO Dick Fuld. In my view Fuld was so full of himself that he refused to see the writing on the wall and held out for too high of a price in his failed attempt secure financing for Lehman in 2008. Further exacerbating the situation is that Fuld was hardly the most agreeable person around and likely rubbed his regulators and the other major firms the wrong way. In the interest of full disclosure I was a managing director at Lehman from 2000 – 2005.Ball’s book is very detailed and the writing leaves out the high drama of the situation making it very text bookie and slow going. Nevertheless the facts speak for themselves.

Outstanding account of the Lehman bankruptcy. The author persuasively argues that permitting Lehman to fail was a bad decision that adversely affected the US economy for many years and could have been avoided. The author shows that Ben Bernanke's purported rationale for failing to provide financial backing for Lehman when the repo market collapsed & Lehman was unable to obtain short term funding -- that he did not have legal authority and that Lehman did not have sufficient collateral -- are both false and that both rationales were concocted after the fact. Rather Bernanke seems to have been pushed into permitting Lehman to collapse by Henry Paulson, the Secretary of the Treasury, because Paulson was afraid of political backlash from both the left and the right for supposed "bailouts." The author parses through the evidence carefully and fairly and does not seem to have an ax to grind. His writing is clear and to the point. This book is a model for economic history.

Most people don't have any idea what goes on when an epidemic breaks out, and even less of an idea of how -- and if -- the people who are supposed to be in charge when an epidemic does break out, are prepared and can get ready to deal with the whole thing. Those people -- the staff at the Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta, Georgia, a Federal agency -- first have to decide if there IS an epidemic happening -- based on practically nothing at first, like a few cases of something that might very well be the flu or just coincidence or hearsay or exaggeration. Right -- and then there's SARS, or for that matter AIDS, back in '81. You gotta hop right on it, like with SARS, and nip it sort of in the bud. I guess with AIDS we didn't exactly get it right, this nip it in the bud thing, but you get the idea. Actually, that was the chapter of Beating Back the Devil I liked the best, the lowkey story of the CDC guy who happened to be working in Los Angeles and put two and two together and more or less figured out the AIDS epidemic, and told everybody that something was definitely up. Maryn McKenna was a reporter in Atlanta where the CDC has its headquarters and labs, so she covered it by going over there a lot. My favorite chapter is about the polio vaccine disaster in Berkeley in the Fifties; obviously Ms McKenna wasn't covering that in real time, but it's a fascinating brief story and a story that everybody should be aware of, now that vaccines are so controversial --- again. I handed out four stars instead of five because while it's an excellent book and totally well written by a great author, it's just a little too detailed here and there; like, uneven -- because, I suspect, the chapters are actually articles from a newspaper and that happens. You know, if they just told you that --- that it's a compilation of Atlanta Journal-Constitution articles -- which maybe they did somewhere but I missed it --- then that would have taken care of that. So if you have read that here, right now, and you buy the book, you may have the full five star experience just because you now know that, and you will adjust your reading appropriately. Tell you one thing -- when you finish reading Beating BAck the Devil you wont' give it away or get rid of it, you'll put it on the library shelf, or maybe give it to your niece or nephew in medical school.

I was very pleased with this book. As is obvious from the title, the book is about the little known organization the EIS. The writing does an excellent job of presenting facts and history while also reading like a novel. The author does an excellent job detailing the history of the CDC and its role in public health in the United States. There are many different vignettes about different outbreaks and the professionals who work on them. These stories are extremely fascinating and read like a good true crime novel. If you are not in the medical field, certain parts might take some research to grasp. This is one of the best books I have read in this subject area. It keeps you entertained while divulging the requisite history of organizations and people.Grade: A

Fascinating! I loved everything about this book. The employees who work in the Epidemic Intelligence Service (EIS) and their previous counterparts are owed a huge debt of gratitude. What they sacrifice in order to get the job done is amazing. I felt this book was well written except for the playing fast and loose with hyphens.....hyphenating words that don't need one, even names? Really? Who does that? It really does read like a true crime book. At the end of one of the investigations I had to take a break. It was a real roller- coaster ride. I will be reading more by this author, I'm certain. I hope the hyper hyphen-loving person steers clear of the next one...Eeesh.

One of the editorial reviews said this book was riveting. There is no doubt that the book is great reading into the EIS, a part of the Center for Disease Control in the United States. This book is especially mandatory reading for those in medicine who are even contemplating working for the CDC. It's good background into the possible postings that these young people are going to see, especially in the post-9/11 world. This will impact not just them, but their families also...these people are exposed as first responders to possible bioterrorism, and will need to get vaccines that the rest of us don't absolutely need. But the possible exposure to anthrax, small pox, and other infectious disease such as the hantavirus means that these vaccines are necessary. This book just was not the riveting reading that I found in Laurie Garret's books, or the book on the 1918 influenza, or "The Hot Zone" by Preston. The book is well-written, and less melodramatic as some of these books are, and I would not be adverse to recommending this as reading for public health students. It is just not as interesting as these other books mentioned, probably because I read those books first...Karen Sadler,Science Education,University of Pittsburgh

I didn't realize the CDC had such a team! They go anywhere in the world to fight endemic diseases! Some of the things they have done are absolutely incredible! Sars, typhoid, and lots of other world terrifying diseases are found, isolated, and treated. Great read!!!

This book tells the story of the EIS in a great way that keeps you interested throughout. Takes you from hotspot to hotspot of modern day epidemics and outbreaks and how they’re fought. And a look behind the scenes of those leading the fight.

If, like me, you enjoy learning about the various illnesses that attack and sometimes threaten the human race, then I would strongly recommend this book. In 13 chapters, it covers the initial discovery of many of the last centuries “disease detective“ stories, taking us into various corners of the world and introducing us to the men and women who are out there - often at the risk of their own lives - trying to find ways to beat back the bugs, germs and other nasties nature throws our way. The book drags occasionally but not enough to deter me from wanting to finish it, and I appreciate the new perspective its given me on some stories I only knew about through the news.
