Emma’s English father loses while gambling with Commander Evans and Emma is the pay-off. She is physically being forced and delivered to Evans for their wedding in the highlands when the coach loses a wheel, and Emma escapes. Emma is a healer, and while she is on the run, she uses her skills to save the life of Lucas, a Highland laird, who was wounded at Dundee and left behind as his clan retreated to their castle. In gratitude, Lucas offers to bring Emma to his castle to avoid being caught and for protection from Evans – who as it turns out was the same officer who killed Lucas’s father. Along the way a relationship develops. The couple's arrival at the castle brings acceptance, hate, betrayal, and love.I enjoyed this tale of a lady in distress and her Highland hero. The storyline progressed well and held my attention throughout. The characters have depth and are likable and believable. Descriptions present a clear “picture” in my mind, and there are some plot surprises I didn’t see coming. I love hearing about the healing plants, the period life and the surroundings described in the story. This story is one you can immerse yourself in so clear your calendar! Fiona Faris's Her Highland Secret: Steamy Historical Scottish Romance is well worth the read.

Poor Ella, her English father bets her with the Commander Evan. She cant believe what she's hearing and will take no part in it. The Commander walks into Ella and gives her the very first kiss she has ever had and cant believe that either. Ella has to leave and while in the stage coach she plots her escape. The first escape didn't go according to her plan but now she can escape since both men have to leave to fix the wheel. She escapes and finds herself asking for help from a Scottish husband and wife. While they know she is hiding something they agree to let her stay, but she is to stay away from the barn. One night after her groans she finds a man that has a fever and bandages that need to be replaced. She finds this is the man she was having dreams of and cant believe he's actually here. In the midst of not getting captured by Commander Evan again Ella and Lucas make there way back the clan. This is truly a great read of historical romance and I voluntarily read and reviewed the ARC.

*Disclaimer: I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review*This book wastes no time in introducing us to Ella and a horrible man she is to marry. Armed with a sharp mind, she manages to make the best of her situation and escapes into the highlands. Like the book blurb says, she runs across Lucas who's life is quite literally in her hands.I enjoyed this book and how it really did feel like there was immediate chemistry between the main characters. At the same time it did not feel forced or rushed, the author did take time to build trust between them, which makes their relationship relatable and not so fantastical. I enjoyed the doubts the characters had and that they themselves acknowledged the circumstances that intertwined their lives, wanting to make sure that the other really does care/love them for being themselves. The plot progressed nicely and while there was no real "twist" I thoroughly enjoyed it because most times the "twist" seems forced and too sudden. The story felt natural and it was a great read. Overall, I give it 4.5 stars, mostly because the end didn't really feel like a satisfying ending, more like a set up for the next installment.

Oh, man! Talk about a hard road to follow. This is one exciting, action packed, fast paced, heart pounding, pulse racing, smooth flowing, page turning wonder that's as riveting as it is captivating. In a whirlwind of emotions and events that transpire really pulls those heartstrings to the max. All the drama, frustration, heartache, uncertainty, nailbiting and a little suspense increases steadily while tension spirials as the plot thickens. Twists and turns abound with unexpected circumstances and unpredictable surprises that make for one incredible experience. The characters and scenes are written with such realism it really pulls this little jewel together beautifully. Fiona did an amazing job bringing this read to life. Fantastic job Fiona, thanks for sharing this little guy with us.I received a review copy of this story.

Lucas MacGill is the new leader of the Clan MacGill after his fathers death but now hes been injured at the Battle of Dundee against the British he is hiding out on a farm but he is getting sicker and has developed a fever.Emma is in and awful situation because her father is addicted to gambling and now he has offered her in exchange of his debt being forgiven. Commander Evans a vile man agrees to the marriage but Emma is devastated. On her way to Scotland her carriage looses a wheel and she flees she is taken in by the same couple that are trying to care for Lucas. She sees him suffering in there barn and knows she can help him her mother taught her how to be a healer. In his gratitude he offers Emma sanctuary at his castle knowing they cant put the farmer in anymore danger they make there way to his castle he also discovers they have a comon enemy Commander Evans killed his father. As passion and love develope between them they still have the mater of the Commander to deal with. I always like reading books by Fiona Faris she has a way of making the landscape come alive and in this book i also learned how important plants were to the people of this time they had many purposes to help in healing the sick and injured even in childbirth.

Powerful!! A Rumored Fortune, only the second book by written Joanna Davidson Politano, is on my list of top ten for 2018. More importantly, though, this novel will be in the running for top honors among book awards. This is my prediction for a novel of such high-caliber.Tressa Harlowe’s odd vineyard-keeping father has disappeared from their mid-1800’s castle. Sadly, the search begins not so much for him, but for the treasure rumored to have been behind.I should mention the narrative switches between first person, the rich heiress, Tressa; and third person, Donegan, the vinedresser in a class beneath her. Considering the societal differences so important at that time, this is extremelyclever of Politano. This book grasped my attention from the start and held on, like the sea and mist that surround the castle and rarely loosen their clutches on it or its land.Sadly, no matter what time period, people change very little. There are those who hear of someone else’s fortune and justify it should be theirs instead; schemers descend like vultures determined to get their share of the grand meal.Obviously, Politano is an anglophobe and describes the area, life, and characters with a poetic prose that makes them “a wonder to behold.” She is a romantic in the linguistic sense of the word.Fortunately, Politano is quite the romantic in the more common sense of the word. We see several possible romances, involving more than just the main characters. Which will thrive, and which will die, because there was no real connection?Speaking of connections, Tressa has three main interests: her father, (and the vineyard because that was his obsession); relationships, and the fortune. Politano weaves them all together in an unforgettable story of agricultural lessons for life, including the spirit, romance, and intrigue that will leave you amazed at the experience you have just sojourned.Hard to pick just a few quotes, but here are some faves:“Strength comes to the branch through connection, and that’s what I’m offering.” How Tressa needs connections in more ways than one!“It takes a harsh summer to yield abundance in the vineyards...When you feel you’re dying in the summer, all a branch needs to do is hang on.” So timely for anybody going through a rough patch!“...isn’t the sort of man I would imagine knowing much Scripture.” ‘No, ...he simply lives it out.’” We all need to live out our faith like that unnamed character!I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher. (I also bought my own copy.) This did not affect my opinions in any way, nor was I required to leave a positive review.

I reviewed Joanna Davidson Politano’s debut novel Lady Jayne Disappears and adored it, so I was quite excited to get my hands on her second work, A Rumored Fortune. Also a historical Christian romance with a strong female character, this one did not disappoint – and it too features a good mystery and more than a few twists to keep you on your toes.Tressa is kind, thoughtful – and as Donegan reveals to her, naive about and sheltered from the world outside the castle in which she lives. While she lived a life of wealth and one free of material concerns – at least up until shortly after we meet her character on the page – the luster of her privileged life is dulled as we read of her childhood, and what saves her from the “poor little rich girl” stereotype is that her character is genuine, clever, and caring to those she engages with.A Rumored Fortune is a layered tale. The alleged death of Tressa’s father draws out greedy fortune hunters, and it quickly becomes obvious that some people can’t be trusted…or can they? With plenty of red herrings to make us second guess who is there for Tressa and who will try to take advantage of her, Politano also shows that people are more complicated than they appear on the surface. And there are twists! Caught up in the search for the missing fortune her father is said to have hidden, I found myself wondering if the fortune was more philosophical (was it actually Tressa, or the vineyard itself); why had her father pushed her away, and what was the mystery behind the source of his wealth; what had happened to her father; and who could she trust? The author beautifully weaves all these questions together, and as one seems on the verge of revealing itself, the story takes another turn. The author also weaves in an excellent reflection on women and marriage, and love versus necessity as a driver in this period. From Tressa’s mother and her cousin Neville’s former actress wife Ellen Langford, to her hapless ladies maid Lucy and the very cheery, generous but poor Mrs. Sullivan, her treatment of the necessity of marriage for stability versus for love is human and perceptive, and her treatment of both her mother and Ellen’s situations are insightful and much more layered than I expected – a thoughtful treat. The Christian element is much more prevalent in this novel than her last, but Tressa’s faith is as well woven into the essence of her character as it is into Donegan Vance’s, so it doesn’t feel gratuitous or preachy. A Christian myself, I’m ever leery of books where the main character prays for rescue and God responds with a billboard and fanfare and flashing lights; I like to think God sends us what we need, but it’s up to us to see it the solution in front of us, and this is one of Tressa’s strengths. She reveals that as a lonely child she had easy conversations with God, and as an adult she questions the prompts and pushes she receives in response to prayer as wishful thinking – again, something relatable as a rational, overthinking adult. If you are not overtly religious, this may make you uncomfortable, but I would encourage you to view it as part of her innate characteristics (she’s kind, she’s creative, and she’s of deep faith) as it explains much about her character and it’s development. All in all, A Rumored Fortune was a lovely stand alone mystery AND romance. For me, though, its true strength was in the character development. We watched some of the main characters grow and change and even heal; through secondary characters like Tressa’s mother and Ellen, the author made me push past the stereotypes of those who married for wealth and status by revealing the weaknesses and fears that drove them, humanizing them to where even if I couldn’t like them, I could understand them. If a book can grant you a change in perspective, even if it was unintended, that is a gift.

What a wonderful story! I thoroughly devoured Joanna Davidson Politano's latest book. Rarely do I end a book with a prayer, but following the last line of the book was a scripture verse from John 15:5 “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing", so I quite naturally ended with a prayer asking for help to always abide in Him. It was so nice to see the author on Facebook on release day sharing her own personal growth during the writing of this story. The lessons of the life of a vineyard corresponding to scripture was so lovely. What is not to love about the handsome Donegan, a true example of the Father's unconditional love. The story is a treasure hunt to be sure, in more ways than one! I highly recommend A Rumored Fortune!

I didn't think I could love Joanna's second book as much as I loved her first, Lady Jayne Disappears, but I did! Tressa was the kind of strong, beautiful, jump-over-a-balcony-railing Victorian heroine I love to read about. Donegan is gruff and heroic, with just enough Darcy in him to make a girl sigh. The author does a fantastic job of revealing true character throughout the story, while keeping the secrets of who and what to trust until the very end. The writing is lyrical and the story is fast-paced and full of intrigue. I highly recommend this book!I received a copy of this book from Revell and now offer my honest review.

While the book is handy, you need the electronic access to complete the college class. You will find that after renting the book and having to purchase the online access key, it would have been cheaper to buy a new book outright.

You MUST buy this book NEW for any COLLEGE CLASS. New books come with the access code required to listen to music for the class. The USED books code is no longer valid. Each book has it's own code. With that said, the book is excellent.

I bought the "shorter edition" for a class because I was trying to save money with a paperback. This is NOT the same book at the hardcover! I regretted my purchase by the end of the first class -- the paperback shorter edition is missing so much interesting material from the full-length edition, that you just don't get a good picture of the material being covered. It is like reading only crib notes -- the "flesh" that would give meaning to the whole is missing. So I am selling it back to Amazon (thereby losing a bunch of money because I bought it new) and buying a used hardcover. I'll use my secret code to access the online files for the shorter edition, and for other selections, well, there's Spotify.Rather than coming with CDs, this book comes with a website and a code to log on to hear the selections. Of course, if you buy a used book, you don't get this, although you can buy it separately.Outside of the shorter edition being a waste of money (for me), I think the book is wonderfully well organized with great illustrations. I'm looking forward to the hardback version.

Did not come with access code

'The Enjoyment of Music' was actually enjoyable to read, for being a textbook! It discusses music from the Middle Ages to the present. For each song that the chapter covers, it contains a listening guide. The listening guides include some tips on what to listen for, what instruments are playing, the English translations for lyrics in foreign languages, and some other stuff for the music lover. It also has biographical notes on composers and historical notes on the time periods. The only thing I wish this book covered a little more thoroughly was the definitions of their words.

This was purchased for a college music appreciation course. It contains not just information about composers through the ages but also the genre of their music, how the music developed, the cultural influences that affected their music and how to recognize the different types of music. This is best used with the companion The Norton Recordings: 8 CDs to accompany the Norton Scores & The Enjoyment of Music. This will continue to be my source for music information in the future.

This is an updated version of a music textbook that has been a standard for decades. I do use this volume in my Music History classes at the University. I find it to be excellent for the beginning music student, and I encourage Music professors to consider this text for their courses.Brian Bennett, Ph.D.

I got this for college and since unfortunately lost it, but wowee if you want to learn about the absolute pinnacle of mankind's music and how to classify and identify it, this book if for you!
