Kiki smiled as she raced down the Trident Academy hallway. She bumped into a mergirl from her third-grade class. “Watch out, for shark’s sake!” Pearl Swamp snapped. “Sorry,” Kiki said, still clutching her letter. Her heart pounded in excitement. Kiki loved getting notes from her family in the Eastern Oceans. It made going to school so far away, in the Western Oceans, a little easier. She soared through her doorway and swam straight to her killer-whale skeleton bed. Once she had curled her purple tail among the gray heron feathers, Kiki ripped open the letter. Dear Kiki, Hi! How is school? I wish I could go 2 Trident 2. Guess what? My f riends started a book club! We are reading a scary book. I will show it 2 u when u get home! Miss u, Yuta Kiki read the letter twice and blinked back a tear. Her brother Yuta was a year younger than she was. She had been very close to him ever since they were small fry. Now that she went to school so far away, she really missed him. Kiki glanced around her dorm room. Rainbow-colored jellyfish lamps hung from the curved ceiling, and a small waterfall tinkled gently in a corner. One whole wall glittered with plankton. A magnificent coral reef made up another wall. Kiki knew she was lucky to have such a fin-tastic space all to herself. At home her brothers had to share bedrooms. But living all by herself could be lonely. Sometimes she wished she had someone to talk to. Weekends were the worst, because her best friends, Echo and Shelly, usually spent those evenings with their families. Many students who lived in the dorms also left to visit relatives. At least she had plenty of books to read! Kiki looked at her tall rock bookcase and smiled. She had read every book on her shelf over and over. Reading stories always helped her feel less lonesome. Kiki read Yuta’s letter one more time before hopping on her tail with excitement. Even though Yuta was far away, he had given her a mer-velous idea!

I bought this book to use for a lot of my beginner level acoustic guitar students. The song list is great and the layout of the book is nice as well. My issue lies with putting everything on just 2 pages. It clusters things a lot and I've noticed its been a little hectic to read for some of my students. Because of that I feel like the book short changes the songs some because they try to cram a lot into the pages.It's not a bad book by any means, but it could've been designed a little bit better in my eyes. I'd still recommend the book though.

As an experienced guitarist, I thought this might be a fun book to use to pick up some quick and easy songs. The book has lots of problems, both for the beginner and for the more advanced guitarist. First, the layout is difficult to read, with lyrics spanning the page with little else to help you keep track of what line represents what verse. The song selection is all over the map, from Dylan to Jason Mraz, Boston to Queensryche. The former you can pull off without revising the arrangement, but there's no way anyone but an advanced arranger is going to pull off Boston's "More Than A Feelling" on acoustic guitar. Each song gets a two-page spread, and the pages work poorly as lead sheets and as chords + lyrics. Finally, there are some questionable key changes for some of the songs, placing the song out of the singing register of some voices.

Seems like a solid book. Probably a little less beginner friendly than I expected but the songs play well for those of us with a more limited chord vocabulary.

This book is not for true beginners (0-6 months). I couldn't find any song in this book to be able to play.

DIGITAL VERSION IS JUNK! The type size on Kindle for PC, on my Android, or on line view is too small to read. The small type size makes the chord diagrams way too small to see the necessary details, and you need a magnifying glass (on a PC screen?) to even get a clear view of the lyrics. I made the mistake of 1 click buying the book, because I wanted to order the paper version after I saw the samples on line. I don't think I will get to use this book at all in digital form!

I can't wait to improve to learn more of these songs, It was a good selection, Could use more notes and chord assistance on pages, or a cd link to hear the songs. Wish it had that.

Wish I handn't bothered. Not a fan of a lot of these songs in the first place, and there are a lot of complicated (to me) chords and whatnot in it. There are lots of apps that are free, cheap, or better for this sort of thing.

For the most part, the book was okay. Some of the recipes were good, but someone seriously needs to edit this book. Typos, poor grammar, and illogically constructed sentences abound (annoying in something I am paying for, but not enough for me to hate the book). What is not forgivable, however, are recipes that are incomplete. One of the recipes I was most interested in, Seared Duck Breast with Cranberry Mustard Sauce, completely neglects to tell you how to make the Cranberry Mustard Sauce! (it says "see below", but then there is nothing below).Pictures are supposed to be helpful in a cookbook - but the pictures here are random "artistic" still lifes. A tiny fraction of recipes are illustrated, and the ones that are may be several pages in either direction from the actual recipe (and not labelled, of course).This book is also definitely geared towards a Californian cook. Many ingredients she mentions are only available on the Pacific coast - the recipe has to be adapted or disregarded for an East Coast cook. There is also an incessant and grating moralizing, as only a Californian Hippie can do: Use organic raisins! A carrot "hot dog" (no, not a hot dog flavored with carrot - literally a steamed carrot on a bun)! And my favorite refrain, repeated over and over (and a full page sermonette devoted to it) - use only eggs from free range pastured chickens, because they may taste a little bit better, but you'll feel good as you fork over an exorbitant amount to pay for these eggs!Finally, in a cookbook from an award winning writer, I would expect recipes of substance. Many of the recipes are good, but many of them are ridiculous. Hot Dogs with Mustard? (you open the roll, put the hot dog on a bun, and then serve it with your mustard of choice - yes, that is a recipe in the book). Parts of the book were good and informative, but the rest of the book just isn't good enough to recommend it.

This book would look wonderful on a coffee table -- I can't stop staring at the image on the front cover that seems so real that it wants to pop off of the page!But it's more than that.It begins with a brief but intriguing history of mustard's use as one of the "world's most beloved condiments." Then come recipes showing the many different uses and tastes that can be achieved with mustard, so the reader gets a full perspective of all that mustard has to offer (which is much more than I would have guessed!) The result is an enjoyable (and delicious!) course that will leave you really knowing how to use mustard.But the best part is the photography. These pictures have so much depth and character. From fields of yellow mustard plants to the detail of mustard seeds to fresh vegetables to be used in a recipe with mustard, I'd be seriously tempted to buy this book just for the pictures even if I didn't want the recipes and history!

This book isn't what I thought it was. I THOUGHT it was a book of recipes for home-made mustard; but, it's actually recipes for dishes that USE mustard as an ingredient.Yes, there are a few recipes for mustard, and one of them is excellent. I would buy it again for that recipe but wish there were more like it.

I bought this for my food blog reference library, and I'm glad I did. Some standards and classics, and a lot of pretty cool derivatives. If you love mustard, and want to expand your DIY repertoire, this ones for you.

I have scores of cookbooks...I find this one really interesting & have used some of their suggestions & have been suprised & enjoyed the differences it makes in taste! It's a keeper!

We've tried a few of the recipies in the book and they are great. Neat history of mustard section, though I would have preferred a little more in the way of recipes, over such an extensive history section.

This book was given to me by a friend and I have thoroughly enjoyed reading through it. I LOVE mustard and use it in cooking, all the time. I think it's one of the most underutilized culinary treasures that we have. ;-)Included in this book is an overview of the many types of mustard plants and prepared types of mustard that are available, history, medicinal uses and several recipes. Nicely presented too.I'm taking off one star as I would have loved to see more vegetarian recipes in this collection. I also would have liked to read a bit more about the medicinal uses of mustard, past and present. Useful and practical information not found in other pubs like the FAA's Helicopter Handbook. The mountain flying portion alone is worth the price of admission, because it provides valuable information and techniques for understanding and operating in varying wind and terrain conditions. Other than the brilliant work of the Canadians in British Columbia, no one has put this out for pilots who need the tools to fly effectively and safely in the mountains. I know, because I spent the last 25 years of my aviation career teaching and evaluating helicopter operations in the mountains, as a pilot, instructor, and FAA Inspector. This concise, easy to navigate book is a gem. Get it. Study it. And learn to take advantage of the winds and the terrain before they take advantage of you. Fly safe!

Very good .

Good book but the FAA book has more information and is more detailed. It is clean and is pretty basic stuff to get you started on getting your pilots license.

It is not a detailed ground course, but it does offer good information for advanced helicopter pilot situations. it is great for pilots that may want to work in these environments and are courious about the various considerations. I am not disappointed to add it to my reference library.

I gave it as a gift to a helicopter pilot. He said he will enjoy reading it.

The short, embattled life of the minority-white led Republic of Rhodesia spawned a number of highly capable counter-insurgency units, including the Rhodesian Light Infantry, later styled a commando unit and then an airborne unit. The RLI had a remarkable combat record in the bush wars against various guerilla groups, despite its small numbers and lack of access to the most modern equipment. Osprey's Warrior Series offers a well-written summary of the unit in "Rhodesian Light Infantry 1961-1980."Author Neil Grant offers a short introduction to the conflict in Rhodesia before getting directly into the history of the RLI. The author has clearly done his homework, with lots of details on the organization, training, and equipment of the unit. The narrative includes accounts of a variety of RLI missions, notably including cross-border operations into Mozambique against guerilla base areas. Of particular interest to the modern military reader should be the combined arms "fireforce" tactics employed by the RLI, which made the most of the RLI's limited numbers and equipment in difficult terrain under hazardous conditions.The author does not shy away from the origins of the Rhodesian War, nor from the RLI's reputation as a ruthless fighting unit and its often rowdy off-duty behavior. This is a surprising wide-ranging account, backed by lots of period photographs, maps, diagrams, and modern illustrations. Recommended for its insights into the concept and practice of "fireforce" operations.

I am a fan of the late nation of Rhodesia. This book does an excellent job telling the tale of the Rhodesian Light Infantry. Overviews are given of their equipment, training, and tactical deployment. One of the hazards the RLI had to face was lion attacks, that's weird to think of.Rhodesia tried to make things work with what little they had. The nation used the FN FAL as its main combat weapon. The Rhodesians usually always won in the field and their raids into neighboring nations that sheltered the communist supported rebel camps were extremely successful. Note, no operation is given by name but the bibliography does give reference to Ian Pringle's Dingo Firestorm: The Greatest Battle of the Rhodesian Bush War.Honestly, my view is the Bibliography of this book is worth the price of the book itself. This book gives solid writing, good references, good & well documented color plates, and many good photographs. Of particular interest is FN FAL owners will see that some "long flash suppressor" FN FALs were used by RLI troops.This is an excellent small book to start any collectors' start on this history of the end of colonial British Africa.

Good Osprey book on this subject with many pictures and colored drawing. Easy to read and understand, well presented with information covering training tactics and formation during the civil war in this country.

I really enjoyed this book. It does a great job of covering the RLI from start to finish, and has some things not mentioned in any of my other books. It's an impressive amount of information crammed in here, though the drawings could be a notch better.

Add this to your library. If you do research on this topic, start here. Use the information. If more information is needed, follow the links. This is a much faster research method than scanning other works, as they are organized for their topic.

Very disappointed with the colour plates. Bad renditions of Rhodesian camo colours. Too many plates devoted to fire force diagrams (could have been covered in a simple black & white illustration) rather than more close-up details of equipment used etc. Pity. An opportunity wasted.

A really good primer on the RLI. Tells the story and history of the unit and its equipment mixed in with some first hand account vignettes.

Q&A with Barrington Irving Barrington Irving is the Guinness World Record holder for "Youngest Person to Fly Solo Around the World." How did you come up with the idea of flying solo across the world? I wanted to inspire other kids to pursue careers in aviation and aerospace so I thought this might be an amazing feat that would inspire them. How do you feel about achieving a Guinness World Record? Awesome, unreal, humbled, and inspired to accomplish even greater feats. Records are made to be broken. I’m just glad I have two records, and one of them--being the first black pilot to circle the world--no one will be able to ever break because I was the first. What is your earliest memory of Guinness World Records? I remember as a kid that I could never afford to purchase the Guinness records books, but every time I went shopping with my mom, I would read through the Guinness book, wondering what amazing talent I might have myself. Little did I know someday my own name would appear there! Who do you consider to be your inspiration for this achievement? My inspiration was my Jamaican parents for working so hard when they came to the U.S. and providing me an opportunity to receive an education. In addition, my mentor Capt. Gary Robinson inspired me to fly and Fabio Alexander, my first donor, was the first person to believe in my record-setting flight. Can you share with us any moments that were scary or dramatic? Did you have a time that you thought you wouldn’t make it? When I began this historic venture, I immediately realized why the youngest person before me was in his 30’s. The skills, patience, timing, training, and decisions I made at 23 helped me to survive. I almost died encountering a sandstorm at 17,000 feet over Saudi Arabia; crossing the North Atlantic on a 12.5-hour flight; encountering a monsoon over Vietnam (when I dropped my airplane from 20,000 feet to 9,200 ft., almost colliding into a mountain); and crossing the Bering Sea, when my aircraft was heavily covered with ice and I landed with only 12 minutes of fuel remaining on an island only one mile long! Inversely, when did you realize that you were going to make it around the globe? I never really felt comfortable until I reached Alaska and I saw US cable TV. (laughs) How did you keep yourself alert and focused during the flight? Eating sunflower seeds, drinking energy drinks, and relying on my own sheer will. Tricking myself mentally is what kept me focused. I took off my watch and said to myself: "No more will I worry about the time, I determine time now." What happened to your plane once your trip was finished? I’ve used it to fly 600 kids around the U.S. What did your family and friends think of your expedition? i've been an enthusiast of the guiness book of world records since i was VERY young. i used to spend countless hours perusing the annual records books - memorizing often useless details. it turned out that, over the decades, many of those details have been useful, especially at parties and social gatherings. several times the information has been useful in academic settings. imagine how thrilled i was when my children both expressed an interest in the guiness book of world records. the format changed some years ago - it's much easier to read, page through, perhaps it has a few less records but it has bigger, brighter, and more photogenic images that grab the attention of kids! year after year, it's not significantly different. most of us can go 2-3 years without a new volume. the quality of the information, images, and the books itself is outstanding. this book, this year, is my effort to encourage my son to read a bit more. i give everything a grade, and i believe that this merits a solid "A". i believe that the guiness book of world records is excellent in detail and quality, and ought to be considered essential to public libraries, school libraries, and homes of individuals with an interest in "trivia".

Well, here it is. The 2012 version of the Guinness Book of Records. Much of this is silly and baroque. Still, so much fun!The very first record in this volume? The largest object lifted by helium balloons (in this case, a house). The last? The most layered bed-of nails sandwich (difficult to explain, but a little different!).In between are myriad records, many of which are of little moment (such as most wins of the mashed potato wrestling championships). Others: Greatest distance pushing a mini scooter; Most times climbing to Mount Everest's summit; First wedding conducted by a robot; Busiest railroad station; Most expensive bridge; Longest running children's magazine; Longest serving TV host; Most wins in a WNBA season.So, are you interested in world records of a particular sort? Then this book will be enjoyable reading for you.

My children enjoyed reading the book (young teenager and under 11). It has nice picture and is more of a coffee table book than a dictionary style book that I remembered. I'm not sure if there is another book out there that is more Webster Thesaurus style with indexed records and paperback size, but would like one if it exists.It also seemed like there were a lot of 'World Records" missing in this version. again, its a rather large book with lots of pictures, but lacking the informational substance or number of records that I'm sure are out there and not listed in this book.Pretty book, but disappointing - style over substance..

I have been buying these for my son as a Christmas gift for about 10 years (he's 30 now and has come to expect them each year). He really enjoys both reading and collecting the books. I have also found out that I paid too much by making the mistake of buying this book a few of the early years from a bookstore or even Walmart for much more than Amazon charges for it. I never get my books anywhere but Amazon anymore. The prices and quick shipping (plus free shipping when available) cannot be beat by any other retailer, brick & mortar or online.

The only reason I have it 2 stars is because of the size of the book. It's the size of your typical novel, that sucks. Makes it hard for a couple people to look at at the same time. Plus makes the pictures and the words hard to see and read. No I don't have eye sight problems. But when it's an award winning picture I want to see it in clear detail and color would have been nice. Most pictures are in black and white, cheaply done and made. Get the hard back print that is bigger and in color.

This family LOVES these books, and they have been a Christmas tradition for about 20 years now! Each year I have to be more creative so that these books are absolutely the last packages handed out - because immediately everything else must stop while the search for one thing or another starts - and all is quiet for a few minutes before laughter and calls of "look on this page" begin! And each person has to get their own copy of the book - so I usually wrap a large box or gift bag addressed to me, and hold onto it until the very end of all gifting - even though now everyone anticipates the books!

When I first started collecting Guinness Books, they were fun and all about the real amazing records. Now they're a bit crazy and focus on the gross things that I barely even consider "a record" (like tattoos, piercings, etc.). The science and technology sections are still really amazing.Wish they went back to their roots instead of focusing on the "freak-show" aspects of the world.

My son does not like to read fictional reading comprehension stories. After skipping through and wasting half of our spectrum reader, we stumbled on this in Staples. There is a big stretch between his spectrum grade 2 reader and this grade 3 reader. But, the ingenuity of the subject matter keeps him interested. Reading comprehension is no longer his least favorite subject. I would recommend this book again.
