What You’re Really Meant to Do by Robert Steven Kaplan is a personal and professional development book hinged on the fact that you have a unique potential. And not only do you have a unique potential, but the only way you can be truly successful is by accepting and acting upon your uniqueness. Which, in my opinion, is an eloquent way to say go follow your dreams, kid. Only that might be hard and you probably are not a kid anymore. Kaplan acknowledges this and is upfront about the difficulty in not only figuring out what you want to do but also that what you want to do may not be feasible (at least for the moment).Sprinkled throughout this book are various exercises the reader should complete. The exercises are creative and should be completed to get the most out of this book. Some are short and some are long. Some are fun while others make you contemplate how many years of your life you have pissed away. Which is still fun, right?Kaplan takes a unique angle on development relative to other books on the market. It approaches situations and provides advice from a career perspective, which is fitting because the majority of Kaplan’s personal experiences shared within the book relate to business. They are concrete and implementable; though not comprehensive relative to other development books I have read. If you’re looking for a book to transform your life than I would suggest supplementing this book with another selection more focused on personal development (think The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen Covey). But if you want to learn from a guy who has spent a lot of time with a lot of successful people and are particularly interested in furthering your career, then I would recommend picking up your copy today.

If you read career books, many are written by folks in career counseling and advising. What is unique about this book is that the author's perspective has been shaped by business and academic experiences. The author, Robert Kaplan, ran global businesses for two decades, ultimately becoming the executive chairman of Goldman Sachs. These experiences in working with, and mentoring, individuals in business in various stages of their careers, prompted Kaplan to think deeply about human potential, development and leadership. He left Goldman Sachs to teach in the M.B.A. program at Harvard, teaching a course on Authentic Leadership based on Medtronics CEO'S book TRUE NORTH.All of us yearn for success. The thesis of this book is that you won't feel satisfyingly successful without working to reach your unique potential. The good news about potential is that it is unlimited. Kaplan says you never get to the end of your potential as there are always ideas to explore, things to learn and skills to improve. Kaplan encounters a mix of folks in his executive MBA classes at Harvard and discovers many have great credentials and are achieving monetary success but are dissatisfied. What are they missing? Some older executives and professionals are feeling regret and bitterness concerning their career choice. He also encounters many individuals who are making less money, perhaps, but working in a field they are passionate about, using the skills they enjoy most using, and are happier than the folks who have pursued wealth or status at the cost of doing something in a field they loved. It's difficult to be truly successful in the long term if you don't have some sense of passion for what you do, Kaplan suggests. This book offers exercises in self-discovery to understand yourself better and to identify what you want. Its eight chapters are grouped under umbrella topics: 1) what you're really meant to do 2) know thyself 3) make the most of opportunities and 4) the extra mile. At the end of each chapter are suggested follow-up steps regarding taking action. There is a lot of wise advice in this book regarding attitudes and behaviors from someone who has been successful in business, mentored others and thought deeply about developing potential. For example, he discusses how to deal with setbacks in a career. Engaging examples of individuals he has encountered in his executive M.B.A. classes at Harvard who are sorting out career issues are integrated throughout the book and enrich the principles in the book.Kaplan gives examples of folks who are thinking of leaving their job or career because of a current obstacle. By asking probing questions and coaching, Kaplan demonstrates that often these individuals still love their field and company, but just need to deal with the obstacle. To be successful, Kaplan suggests you ask yourself: what are the top three tasks you must do extremely well to succeed in your job? And then spend 70% of your time and focus on those three tasks. Another searching question Kaplan poses: What stands in the way of you spending time on the activities you enjoy? Is there an action you could take that would remove one or more of these impediments? As to whether this book would be helpful to entrepreneurs, it could. Kaplan gives examples of some of the entrepreneurs, or folks who worked for entrepreneurs, whom he has encountered: a chef who owned three restaurants in Rhode Island and was thinking of adding more but was unhappy, a retailer who co-owned a successful business in California but was thinking of leaving it due to conflict with her business partner, a student who chose to work for a small philanthropy organization instead of going into the financial services field like her classmates, and an individual who started his own money management firm. The questions in this book will give aspiring entrepreneurs some self-assessments as to what they really want to do. (Also recommend the book: Startup Leadership: How Savvy Entrepreneurs Turn Their Ideas Into Successful Enterprises by Derek Lidow who started iSuppli Company and sold it for multi-millions. Lidow teaches Entrepreneurship at Princeton. If you want a look at entrepreneurship to see if you would enjoy its rigors, his book is helpful.)Kaplan's central message is we should worry less about being a success and more about reaching - and developing - our potential as this is where happiness lies. He says there are many paths to accomplish this, and we should pick a path which suits us. This book has some ideas on how to do this.

This book is horribly mistitled. It should be called "How to Get a Promotion at Your Current Job". That title is much more appropriate. There is only ONE chapter (out of eight) devoted to (and titled) Finding Your Passions (and weirdly it isn't even the first chapter... It's third)... And even then it's just full of all the usual high school guidance counselor clichés (if money was no object, what would you do? Etc.) you've already heard a billion times. There are many references to "your firm". If you are trying to decide "what you're really meant to do" with your life, you probably don't work at any kind of "firm".I can't figure out all of the positive reviews of this book (fake maybe?). It's primarily about building relationships and improving your skills at your current job.If you work for a big law firm or consulting company and are looking to schmooze your way up to a sweet junior partner position, you should buy this book.If you are really trying to figure out "what you're really meant to do" with your life, there is almost nothing of value here for you. Sorry.

Our heart will always ache when our spouse is "taken" from us. We had so much left to do!We are devastated. After the initial shock, reality "sets in". So many decisions to make. We are on an "emotional roller-coaster." We have to grieve in a way that will ultimately bring healing. A new perspective. I have personally been on this "grief journey" since April 26,2013. I have finally come to the realization that "I have to Live." That "God left me here for a reason."After 35 years of marriage...losing my first & only love...it has truly been a long, heart wrenching journey. The words in this book not only come from Gary Roe, but many others who have experienced the loss of their spouse. The author, Gary Roe has experienced many losses in his life. His heart is set on helping others. I am so thankful for the "help" I have received not only from this book, but the many other resources he has made available to help us on our Journey. Thank You Gary Roe for your devotion to provide these resources for broken hearts💔

I lost my husband in July of 2016 and this book so helped me deal with his death! It shares people and theirstories of having lost a loved one. It alerted me to the fact that I am not alone; in fact there are thousandsat any one time who is also grieving the loss of a loved one. I read it and didn't want to put it down untilI had finished the book. I then passed it on to another friend who lost her spouse 12 days after I lost mine.I totally recommend it to anyone whether or not you've lost a loved one, spouse, etc. It is very informativeand easy reading.

As I was reading this book, I am glad to see others are going or went through what I am going through. This roller coaster of emotions is not easy to work with, but like you said we need to work through it. I did cry while reading this and already have counseling going, going to try and get others who are not only safe to talk to but ones who have gone through what I am going through at moment. His lose has hit me hard, and the void that was left is fairly big, within time I know I will heal but still the memories are there. I already experience many memories from listening to music, or doing things we loved to doing together.

If you have experienced the loss of your spouse, PLEASE get this book. It has been eight months since my husband passed away and this book has made me see my grief in a healing way. I will always grieve and always miss and always love my husband but with the help of this book, I feel like there is hope, I am not in this alone. For your own healing, please get this book. This book has been such the blessing that I needed to help me learn how to grieve. Heartbroken but not alone.

I recently purchased three copies. One for myself, the other two for friends who had also lost their spouse. I don't know what I expected, but I started tearing up immediately upon starting to read. So many stories spoke to the feelings I have had, or have not yet experienced since the death of my Dale. A wonderful book that takes us on a journey toward healing and accepting life as it is now without our lifelong mate. Thank you, Gary!I have since ordered 5 more copies for friends who are grieving, and I'm ready to order more. In place of flowers, or anything else, I find that the people I have gifted have been appreciative of this gift of healing. When I originally read the book, I went straight through it in one night. I think I must have just been reading words. I recently picked the book up again and re-read it. Took me three weeks to work my way through, sometimes only reading 2-3 pages at a time. I also took the time to answer the questions that followed each section of the book. Thanks again, Gary for helping me to make this journey.

Outstanding book for those who are grieving the loss of a loved one. It is written in layman's terms and reflects all the stages that a person goes through. I lost my husband on March 5th, which was totally devastating, and I'm still in the early stages of grief. I find this book to be comforting. I would recommend it to anyone who has just lost a loved one or maybe is several years into the grief process. I believe this book would be a blessing to anyone who reads it and wants to feel comforted

I'm sorry to be negative about what is clearly beloved by many. If there's one area in which your mileage may vary, it's grief. This is just my take, my opinion.I did not find this book helpful in the slightest. Very short chapters in which someone describes what they're feeling (sad, guilty, angry, lonely, lost, relieved) and then a suggestion to "honor your loved one" and a short Bible verse or inspirational quote.I was looking for something more concrete to help me through this agony, not a series of platitudes and vague remarks about "it takes the time it takes," "be gentle with yourself," and similar statements. I could have written this book myself after an hour of looking at various blogs about the grief process.I'm giving it 2 stars because the Kindle formatting was perfect and the writing itself was well done with no errors in grammar that I noticed. I'm sure the book is meant kindly and that the author hopes it will be helpful.

As I read this book, there were so many things I could relate to. My ex-husband, who I was married to for over 19 years suddenly passed away 2 years ago. I am still struggling with his death and at times, I still don't believe that he is gone. Although, we were divorced, we still had a good relationship and I can honestly say that he was the love of my life. I'm dealing with a multitude of emotions including guilt but hope that in time, I can come to some type of peace that I did the best that I could for him.

I am a therapist and I bought this book because I was looking for something to use with a family who has a foster child they are considering adopting. I had read that this book covered foster care as well, so I thought it sounded like a good option. Unfortunately, I was not able to use it. The book begins with a warm and fuzzy intro about how an adopted child's biological family chose adoption because they wanted their child to have a better life than they could offer. The book mostly focuses on this type of situation, though it does mention that sometimes older children may have lived in a foster home or a group home before being adopted. Most foster children are in foster care because they have been removed from a situation of abuse or neglect. I was not comfortable using this book because the child I am working with was severely abused by his parents and I did not want to present a book that made it sound like most parents choose adoption because they have the child's best interest in mind. This would be hurtful and confusing for him. If you want to talk to your child about adoption and he or she was adopted at a very young age, this book would be great. I would not recommend it for older children adopted through the foster care system.

So, so helpful to my 7 year old (adopted at 23 months) who's really struggling with understanding the concept of adoption from why he's not with his birth parents through to the fact that he's not the only child in the world who's been adopted. We read this book together - a few pages at a time each night so that we could talk it over and absorb it properly. He said he loved this book once we'd gotten through it.

Cute book. Great explanations. Really targeted towards a middle-late elementary age.

Very well written, and explains the process of adoption.

We have a 5 year old son and are planning to adopt a child through county DHR. We looked everywhere to find a book that explains adoption to our birth child. This one did the trick. It is written to the adopted child but we were able to use it with our birth child. It is full of facts instead of just being a sweet family story. It also points out that children don't have to look like the rest of the family.

I am a therapist working with foster kids. I found this book to be very helpful to kids who are on the brink of being adopted. Children I've read this book with are attentive because they can identify with the information presented.

This book gives a brief overview of all types of adoption and the emotions that are felt by parents and children alike. It might be more valuable in a school library rather than a home bookshelf, as it is so broad it lacks personal connection.

I think this book is more appropriate for domestic adoption. There were a few things that bothered me such as that "usually" adoptive parents know something about birth parents. Most people I know through adoption groups(international) know pretty close to nothing about the birth parents.

Great book. loved watching the documentary even more. The visuals are beautiful.

great read...i remember this time....

perfection

This seemed like a wonderful play back when it came out, but that might have been because Ms' Smith one-woman performance of the show was such a tour de force. If you're not familiar with it, it's a series of monologues centered on the famous Crown Heights riots and, while some of the monlogues hold up (and might, indeed, make god audition pieces for the right actor), the piece as a while doesn't have the force it once did.

great read

2.5 StarsOn August 19th, 1991, the motorcade of a Lubavitcher Hassidic rebbe was traveling through Brooklyn. While driving through the Crown Heights neighborhood, at 8:20pm, one car in the motorcade drove up on the curb suddenly, the car striking and killing seven year old Gavin Cato and also leaving his older cousin with a broken arm. Word quickly spread that a black child had been killed by a Jewish motorist. Some witnesses even said the driver appeared to be intoxicated. Three hours later and five blocks away from the site of the crash, a visiting Hasidic history professor from Australia was stabbed, dying at the hospital some hours later. The basic timeline of events:* August 19th, 8:20pm -- Seven year old black child Gavin Cato killed by car that jumps a curb* Same night, 11:30pm -- visiting Hasidic Jew professor Yankel Rosenbaum, with no connection to the death of Gavin Cato, is stabbed five blocks away from crash site.* August 20th, 2am -- Rosenbaum dies at the hospital from his stab wounds; later that day, Trinidad-American teen Lemrick Nelson, Jr. is arrested in connection with the stabbing. By August 21st, he is charged with second degree murder (but by October 1992 is acquitted).* August 21st -- funeral of Yankel Rosenbaum; that same day marks the start of days of rioting and looting throughout the Crown Heights community. That first day, 16 arrests and 20 police officers left injured.* August 22nd -- the arrest count during the riots rises to 107, the police presence increased to over 1500 officers.* August 24th -- 1500 protesters led by Rev. Al Sharpton and Alton Maddox march through the streets of Crown Heights.*August 26th -- funeral of Gavin Cato; Rev. Al Sharpton delivers the eulogy.* Violent acts and courtroom drama in connection with the deaths of Cato and Rosenbaum continue back and forth between the black and Jewish communities through 1992 and 1993, both sides wanting justice and vengeance. In 1993, Anna Deavere Smith crafted a one woman stage play depicting these events, compiled from the numerous interviews she did with more than two dozen Crown Heights community members, representing both sides of the story, as well as the impressions of high profile members of the black community such as Rev. Al Sharpton and writer Nzotake Shange. Smith pulls from the interview transcripts verbatim to create the monologues for the stage show, ending on the words of Carmel Cato, Gavin Cato's father. The early portions of the play explore the political and emotional environment that existed prior to the events of August 1991, while the later monologues get more into the course of events on August 19th itself (I was surprised to see the text here included one of the actual crime scene photos under one of the passages). Smith, in her foreword, writes of how it was difficult to get a clear, unbiased look of the events at the time when there was media bias from nearly every angle. It was her hope and goal to use the interviews, and later the play, to give a more honest, balanced display of this tragic and emotionally charged time. Also, prior to the start of each monologue, Smith gives contextual history such as when / where each interview took place, even what the person was wearing. For example, in regards to the use of the interview with rapper Big Mo, Smith notes that the interview used in the text was actually one done in 1989.While I appreciate Smith's unique approach to the subject matter, I'm not sure it entirely worked for me, personally. I was expecting for these passages to be more impactful. While some of them are quite good, there are others here where I was wondering about the relevance. The words themselves didn't quite hit the mark, so I did a watch of the stage show itself. While better, even there something was falling short for me. Again, I can appreciate and acknowledge the work that clearly went into crafting this show, but the execution ... something was a little off for me. It didn't always strike me as unbiased a portrayal as Smith claimed she was aiming for and some of the acting did come off as at least a little bit too caricatur-ish.

The play captures the human drama from the highly charged, out-of-control situation in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, over three days of rioting in August of 1991. One of the play's many apoplectic characters says, "There ain't no justice," in response to another character describing separate groups of angry mourners for both Gavin Cato and Yankel Rosenbaum, with each group regarded as being "at a political rally rather than a funeral."Another character talks of "the situation that moved from simplicity to sophistication...to become a powder keg." It is fascinating to hear and watch as each character reflected that powder keg experience uniquely. The play revealed that each one of us is, in fact, the accumulation of our life's experiences, at any given moment in time.As the viewer watches the rumors spread, there is the realization that, "There always is the story. And then always there is the story about the story."In a sense, Fires in the Mirror shows how one story is transformed and extended by the Crown Heights citizens into other stories, with each story being somewhat new, usually nuanced, and uniquely shaped by the circumstances surrounding the story-teller's accumulated life experiences. The accumulation is each individual's life. No other individual in the whole world can possibly have the exact same accumulation of experiences. That's a practical example of what diversity looks like.In a certain sense, all involved are at fault in creating the riots. In quite another sense, the play makes clear that no one is at fault, because at any moment the community is prone to erupt into the confusion and violence that comes from individual bafflement and fear from an unexpected occurrence. In this case the occurrence is the auto crash leading to the murder that evening. The play says it is hard to assign blame. No one but no one wanted to have seven-year-old Cato killed in the auto accident. That evening, the teenagers didn't really want to kill Yankel in retaliation. Rather they were reacting, by automatically and unthinkingly expressing their anger and their oppressively inarticulate grief through knee-jerk violence.Compelling--that one word describes the play's environmental aesthetic of eruption, noise, and confusion, all of which lead by the end to some clarity, yes, but also to stupefied and inexplicable human silence. That muted end result, the play shows, comes from a lack of absolute certainty regarding something important yet ultimately mysterious. There is a great deal to be said for undertaking an exploration of the meaning in the moral ambiguity and confusion prevailing within the conflicted Brooklyn neighborhood, the confusion initiated by the two understandable, if terrible, deaths. In this instance, one might ask this: If we are not to assign blame, then what is the human alternative in these particular circumstances of murder leading to the madness of mass mayhem.Prehaps after all it is forgiveness. As the audience listens to each interpretation of the unfolding story--of what next happened and why--viewers comes to see that each point of view has some validity. There is never merely two sides to a story, that proverbial and simplistic black and white dichotomy. Humans are too complex for easy categorization into a "this" or a "that" camp or an "us vs. them" position. In truth there are often 10 or 15 sides to a story...at least. The basis of each character's expressed perspective seems to derive from each character's absolute, even dogmatic, belief in the virtue and rightness of his or her own special position. And that "to-the-death" view necessarily derives from each character's accumulated life experiences in these our troubled and conflicted times of racial and religious tension. In a limited sense, that's a kind of certainty in a very uncertain world. It's the sort of certainty that comes from an individual's unquestioned belief in lived experience. But in a clearly profound way, the play asks the viewer to expand the cultural and social understandings of "lived experience" and what might result from external expressions of that lived experience.Yet it is true that no virtuous act is as virtuous from the standpoint of our friend or foe as it is from our own standpoint. Therefore we must be saved by the final form of acceptance and love, which is forgiveness. For me, the play brings into dramatic relief that idea of forgiveness as one humane way--whether in Crown Heights and elsewhere--of dealing with cynicism and despair. Those two attitudes of hopelessness seem automatically sometimes to snap into being from the confusion of unresolved social and moral ambiguity.Forgiveness is one answer to the mess. Genuine forgiveness is one expression that can help relieve seemingly irreconcilable tension and conflict. Forgiveness is usually tough--that much we reasonably know. Forgiveness demands courage, heart.Jim Boushay Metro Chicago Resources Unlimited Foundation

In Fires in the Mirror, Anna Deavere Smith says, "A character from a play does not have a visible identity until the actor creates a body for that character." She goes on to explain that her goal is "to show that no one acts like anyone else." She does this by focusing on the details of her characters, the physical and liguistic subtleties that make people unique. This issue of "personality" of character is strongly emphasized in her work. When interviewing, she doesn't simply record the dialogue of her characters; she analyzes her characters, seeking to discover the true identity or identities of the people she portrays. What she discovers--and shares with us--is that her characters are not only three dimensional, but three dimensional in a multiplicity of roles. When she's successful, as she is in portraying the Jews and Blacks of Crown Heights in 1991, the underlying racial conflicts and hatreds and biases of her many-masked characters rise to the surface. This is Anna Deavere Smith's craft: She doesn't play a role. She plays a life playing a role.

I bought this book for nursing school clinical. This book is conveniently small. You can carry it in your pocket on the floor. If you're taking tons of resources to clinical it's great to have something that won't break your back. The only con is its not as great at davis drug guide. While doing medication sheets I found that information was missing (like pt education, nursing considerations, and desired outcomes.) When that would happen I'd pull out my phone and search for the Davis info. But really this book is great if you're starting to pass meds and you need to know what med you're giving and why. So you can pull this tiny book out of your pocket (since phones are usually not allowed in pt care areas). Great quick reference.

This book is awesome. It fits right in my scrubs pocket with no problem, and gives all the info I need while on the floor. This is so much better than note cards.

People on here complaining that it is too small. Its supposed to be small because its a "pocket" guide to be used on the spot in a clinical setting!!! Someone said it was not for nursing school students but I am a Junior 2 nursing student and it has helped me tremendously whenever my clinical instructors quiz me on medications. This is a book for clinical or for quick and easy access. This is not meant to be used for thorough in depth assignments. Seriously.. its in the name...

The kindle version of this has paid for itself a dozen times over already in the last few months. I take this puppy on my kindle every single time my unit goes to the field. As a junior medic this offers exactly what I need for pinches when you have a question about a "less common" medication someone is taking or if I'm trying to broaden my horizon. With the Kindle Paper White having a 3-4 week battery life too, I basically have as much time as I need to get the information I want. Compared to the already small paper copy of this guide, the kindle version fits in a smaller place for those that may be limited on all what they can carry. I would highly recommend this Drug guide over some cheaper/less known names.

As a nursing student this was desperately needed for carrying around in my pocket (it's the PERFECT size for that) but it doesn't contain all the info I need to complete classroom required drug sheets (still have to use other sources)...Still glad I purchased it since it's so portable.

In need of a small drug book, I was pleased with the size of this book for my clinical days. As most of us have to use our apps that we have downloaded on our phones which you all know you are not welcome to have out while on the floor or carrying around that large drug book which can be a nuisance. Be aware the print is small but the book is small but legible.

Perfectly sized for a cargo or coat pocket. Contains basic info on just about any drug you'll encounter, including trade/generic names, routes, indications, contraindications, dosing, side effects, etc. For the price I think it would be very hard to beat. I recommend this for anyone who needs access to drug info such as professionals or students.

I have drug guide apps on my phone that I prefer when at work (I'm a VN) but now that I'm back in school I can't pull out my phone on the floor.. this was perfect. It's small enough to fit in a scrub pocket and has a lot of drugs in it. There was 2 times I couldn't find the drug I needed in this little book though. All in all- I would recommend if having a drug guide on your phone isn't an option for you but at work I still prefer to use my phone.

The Challenge for Business and Society: From Risk to Reward offers a compelling case about the significant, and often transformative role that corporations can play in society, but only if their ethics and values are given a prominent role in company operations. The book clearly outlines, case by case. the positive leadership role that some companies have played historically and currently, while detailing the bad ethics and bad practices of others. But most exciting is the clear path forward that the book outlines for a more systemic and scalable set of actions that business and government can take together to not just address problems, but solve them, making a real impact. This is an important read whether you're currently getting your MBA or you're a CEO, and every one in between. I can't recommend it highly enough.

By Al BakerI cannot get enough of Stanley S. Litow's narrative from the front lines of American corporate culture. Businesses that employ us, inform us, serve us in ways large and small and open pathways for creatively navigating these times have an amplified voice in our world. Repeatedly, Mr. Litow's dispatch showcases the unique ways corporations can set moral guideposts on the path to a shared benefit for society. Whether in education, the environment or social justice or other issues, it is the way businesses embrace their role, the "how" specifically, that resonates repeatedly in reading Mr. Litow's inspired words. His book is a gift to take in, to consider, and to read again.

This is an easy-to-consume assessment of how business leaders need to focus on their contributions to society, and how those efforts are more than just "checkbook philanthropy." The best companies, like IBM and Chase, seem to know how to contribute to the long-term needs of education, health care, and economic development. Very readable, and very relevant to our society today.

A great read, especially in these times. An informative, entertaining discussion of how business can make a measurable difference for society, while also being a "business." This history of corporate social responsibility is particularly interesting, and the examples of effective efforts under way today offer hope!

This book identifies the many areas of society in which business has had, and continues to have, a remarkably positive affect. In today’s world, conscious capitalism is becoming the new norm. Litow's book substantiates that fact very well.

This is THE book for businesses to follow is they want to be part of the solution to the challenge of creating jobs, and growth as well as creating much needed corporate social responsibility programs. This is an essential guide for anyone in business in the 21st century.

A terrific guide for executives charting a path in corporate social responsibility and a great read for early practitioners and students alike!

Stan Litow, throughout his career, has had a knack of getting groups of people to find their common interests and unite around them, to solve problems. This book encapsulates his philosophy, showing how corporations can work to serve the common good and create innovative solutions. Hopeful, helpful, a must-read in these difficult times.

Practicar programación.

Please forgive me commenting on my own work but I wanted to explain why this book was written. The original MySQL JSON Data Type documentation in the MySQL Manual was wonderful if, and only if, you understood the the functions. If you were new to them, they were hard to comprehend. So I decided to details with practical programming examples on how to use each of the functions including the GeoJSON and included an introduction to the MySQL Document Store (a NoSQL JSON Document Store built on the new X DexAPI).I have found in my many years of programming that a good, concise code example can often explain more than slogging through the documentation in hopes of getting a glimmer of how things really work. This book is full of examples to help you get up to speed quickly with the JSON Data Type in MySQL.JSON is a great way to store data to reduce many-to-many joins. For years I have been preaching to normalize your data to third normal form (or better) but that is often over kill. So instead of having lots of little 'stub' tables in your schema, you can have a mutable JSON column (or more) to store that data that changes rapidly or does not fit your relational structure. And yes there a few 'errors' in the book. I wrote 'idempotent' and somehow it got changed to 'impotent' in the review process. Yikes! Sorry about that. And there are a few more goof that I am noting just incase there is a second edition.

Review

"Creation is full of holy rhythms of life. There is a way to live that honors and embodies these rhythms. The Common Rule is a beautiful, inviting resource that helps us do just that. It is an important guide to living more deeply rooted in God's life-giving kingdom." (Alan Fadling, president and founder, Unhurried Living)"One of the biggest problems among believers today is their lack of discipline. Consequently, they do not live up to the expectations of Jesus as we can see in the decreasing morality in our country. The Common Rule presents a common-sense discipline that any follower of Jesus could use to become a joyful missionary disciple." (Michael Timmis, former chairman of Prison Fellowship Ministries, member of the board of Alpha International and The New Canaan Society)"Habitually choosing what is best over and above what is loud and urgent has never been more difficult than in a culture of perpetual distraction. 'But where do I begin?' people ask. In this book, Justin Earley offers the answer. Follow his lead, and you will find much of your life handed back to you." (John Stonestreet, president of The Chuck Colson Center for Christian Worldview)"It is encouraging to see a new generation of Christians wrestling with the formative power of habits and rituals. Our patterns of life shape our attitudes and actions more than we may realize. The Common Rule urges us to consider our habits in a new light and to embrace a new way of life in which we self-consciously limit ourselves in order to pursue what is best for us and for our neighbors." (Trevin Wax, director for Bibles and reference at LifeWay Christian Resources, author of This Is Our Time: Everyday Myths in Light of the Gospel)"Although I'm a church leader who has known the Lord for decades, I struggle to find space in my days to actually abide in Christ. Instead, I'm tethered to the demands that barrage me through my smart phone. The Common Rule offers a practical way back―not only for individuals but also for churches and small groups." (Karen Heetderks Strong, senior director, The Falls Church Anglican, Falls Church, Virginia)"Books are not meant to be just read. The good ones move you. The great ones change you. I'm now a fan of Justin Whitmel Earley. He's done something that is not so common: he teaches us eight habits that not only change our own lives but more importantly change the lives of those who choose to follow us." (Tommy Spaulding, author of The Heart-Led Leader and It's Not Just Who You Know)"Justin Earley offers a lifeline to every busy, smartphone addicted, distracted person on earth. In his deeply personal and immensely practical book, he inspires us to find a rhythm that will support our most life-giving relationship of all―our friendship with Jesus." (Ken Shigematsu, pastor of Tenth Church, Vancouver, BC, author of Survival Guide for the Soul)"In the spirit of Richard Foster, Eugene Peterson, and so many other reflective authors, this book on the common rule is an exciting contribution to the family God. Each of us needs and longs for a path to deepen our sense of being in this world. So many Christian writers just give us one more self-help book. The Common Rule breaks that mold and serves as a call to deeper intimacy with God." (Gary Bradley, The Navigators)"Justin Whitmel Earley's honest walk through anxiety gives hope to anyone who needs a new way. The Common Rule becomes an accessible way to move forward in your walk with Christ, whether battling anxiety or simply wanting to find Christ at the center of your life. Earley's fresh look at a liturgical life comes off the page and into your daily life. This book is a refreshing reminder that community, shared meals, fasting, praying, silence, and rest all have deep effects on our lives. In a society of fast food and split families, the return to the table is more important than ever. Earley lived the fast-paced world of no margin where everyone has free access to his life, yet in the pages of this book, we see he has found another way–another way for us all." (Diana M. Shiflett, pastor of spiritual formation, Naperville Covenant Church, author of Spiritual Practices in Community)"When someone asks how you're doing and you always find yourself answering, "So busy and crazy," it might be time for a change. The Common Rule offers practical wisdom on how to slowly but deliberately restructure our lives, and it shows us that when we embrace limitations, we paradoxically gain the freedom we long for." (John Dyer, author of From the Garden to the City: The Redeeming and Corrupting Power of Technology)"I'm thankful for the Common Rule because it is a practical tool to save me from the tyranny of machine-like productivity. The book and practices remind me that I am a human being and not a human doing. Read this book and save yourself from the tyranny!" (David M. Bailey, executive director of Arrabon, coauthor of Race, Class, and the Kingdom of God)"In the present age, we are settling to be informed when the call is to be transformed. I'm no Luddite, but we must rethink the way technology and busyness are affecting our loves. The Common Rule not only has incredible practical advice for daily and weekly rhythms, it also opens our eyes to see the water we're swimming in. Every church should consider using this as a resource for formation." (AJ Sherrill, author of Enneagram and the Way of Jesus, lead pastor at Mars Hill Bible Church, Grand Rapids, Michigan)"This is a wonderfully practical book. But even more, it is a beautiful one―full of glimpses of the life we were made for and the simple choices that can take us in that direction. The habits described here and the wisdom they embody are the path toward sanity in a frenetic world." (Andy Crouch, author of The Tech-Wise Family and Culture Making)"The Common Rule is an engaging, relevant, and transforming guide for cultivating spiritual discipline amid the distractions and attractions of life and the daily pressures and challenges of just getting by. The spiritual practices Justin offers are not simply habits and forms adapted for modern life but are habits and forms developed in the painful crucible of personal experience. This book is worth reading and its ways worth pursuing." (Ron Nikkel, president emeritus, Prison Fellowship International)"I love the practicality of this book. Justin Whitmel Earley understands and embodies the reality that we show what we love and value by the daily habits of our lives." (Mark Scandrette, author of Free and Practicing the Way of Jesus, and coauthor of Belonging and Becoming)

I’ve been paying attention to the author’s work on habits since it was just a PDF he created and sent around to his friends. What has become The Common Rule has evolved from a personal attempt to live a saner life into a set of simple but powerful ideas that have helped me, personally, to live as I was designed to and to love God and love the people in my life better. Having those habits refined and presented in such a captivating and accessible way is a blessing, and one I’ve already shared with many others.Having previously learned and tried implementing most of the practices outlined in the book, I was particularly impressed by the appendices, which offer more detail about each of the habits. The section suggesting applications of the habits for different kinds of people (skeptics, families, artists, etc.) will be helpful even for those who don’t fit neatly into any of those categories, because they illuminate the intention behind each habit and will provide the spark for even more people to apply the habits in their unique situations.Earley has done a great service to any number of readers:- Those who have never encountered spiritual disciplines will get a glimpse of a different and better way to live.- Those who are familiar with spiritual disciplines will find an updated interpretation of Willard and Foster that addresses the worst temptations of the smartphone age.- Those who have lived without intention and unwittingly allowed their days, hours, and minutes to be shaped by advertisers and tech companies will get a much-needed wake up call.- Those who are already trying to lead lives of resistance and embrace will be strengthened and encouraged.A couple of quibbles:(1) Several of the habits are meant to be practiced in community, whether in a nuclear family, with roommates, or especially with close friends. The author sometimes seems to assume that everyone has those relationships already in their lives. Those who already struggle with loneliness may be disheartened and see some of the habits as out of reach.(2) In the section on curating media and limiting consumption, Earley suggests making and keeping lists of worthwhile shows, movies, etc., and suggests that anyone who has trouble with this can easily find lists of recommended media. While this may have been true in years past, it’s been a struggle to find lists of films or shows that buttress, edify, or appropriately challenge my (orthodox Christian) beliefs. Perhaps the desire was to focus readers on the habit rather than recommending films from a particular worldview, but it would have been nice to have some suggested starting points, even if it were just what the author uses or commends as worthwhile.Overall, The Common Rule does a beautiful job synthesizing a rich body of wisdom, observation of the human condition, and spiritual direction into an engaging and helpful framework for living differently from most of the people with whom we share our lives. I’m firmly convinced that a life shaped by God working through these habits (among others) is more joyful, more thriving, and more fulfilling than what most of us are currently trying. I’m on board![ Note: I was provided a promotional review copy of the book; however, I’ve already purchased three more for my own use and to gift to others. ]

I've been waiting for this one to come out for about the last six months, and it has exceeded my expectations. The book is a work around habits, which according to Justin, ‘shape you more than you shape them.’ I’ve long been a fan of intentional habits, identity formation, and thoughtful living (Dallas Willard caught me young with The Divine Conspiracy) and Justin’s work is a standout addition to this genre of work. The crux of the book centers around 4 daily habits, and 4 weekly habits – both of which are rhythms of embrace and resistance. If I’m following what he’s suggesting, it means that each day I’m taking a moment to kneel in prayer 3x a day, I’m in the Word before I’m on my phone, I’m eating one meal with other people (engaged in conversation), and I’m spending an hour a day with my phone off (which enough reports tell you makes a significant mental difference in your presence with those around you). Then on a weekly basis, I'm spending one hour a week in conversation with a friend, cultivating relationships (which is most preferable in person, fully present), I’m fasting from something for 24 hours, I’m taking a sabbath (to remind myself of being a creature with limits who should rejoice in their Creator), and I’m saving all the passive use of media (scrolling, surfing, binging) for a scheduled block of time rather than all the snippets of time, presence, and focus that I hand over between lights, pauses in conversation, or pings from my phone. And the end of these habits is the formation of a person who is present, growing in love for God and love of our neighbors.Justin’s voice is engaging and helpful as he shares what he’s wrestled through to make these thoughts clear. I have found myself thankful for a lot of sentences in this book that I can tell are the fruit of sustained thought. In fact, I have been using a nighttime blessing he wrote as part of our bedtime routine for the last eight months or so, and it is sowing the truth of God’s love into our children with succinct language for which I’m thankful.

I was eager for this book to release! I first heard about The Common Rule via Andy Crouch on twitter. I was immediately struck by the simplicity and realistic approach. There's such a great and needed mix of humility and vulnerability in the writing, yet it's clear that Earley has given the topic time and study. There is much wisdom here!I am reading this book along with a personal study of Ephesians. It's a great pairing. I long to grow, and the idea of seeing the Church unified and mature...it's an inspiring, big picture, hope-filled view. I think The Common Rule has much to offer us as we move about our days. It's like taking that big picture, that mature Church, with all the inspiration, hope, and longing wrapped in it, and asking how do we live in light of that? How does this life work if we want to love God with heart+soul+might, and how do we love our neighbor? What does that look like day in and day out? How do we grow and mature? This book helps us answer these questions.
