In addition to reprinting Hiram BinghamÂ’s original 1913 account of the ExpeditionÂ’s journey, Burger and SalazarÂ’s volume presents several chapters in which modern archeologists describe the astounding scientific advances, the religious rituals and the daily life of Incas at Machu Picchu. (The book also includes a catalogue of the artifacts shown in the traveling exhibition.) Particularly fascinating is Susan NilesÂ’s overview of the many practices that Incan royal families used to conserve their status and resources, including the worship of mummified ancestors and the intermarriage of brothers and sisters. I tend to purchase books to learn more about what guides have told me as I visit places. This book has a decent history, some photos of the Bingham investigation/archeological dig, and a catalogue of items found at Machu Picchu. In fact, half the book is a catalogue of items found in the digs.

A wonderful volume describing Machu Picchu --- the last mountainous holdout in Peru which was never conquered. Required reading for anyone interested in South American archaeology.

Having recently visited Machu Picchu via the Inca Trail I wanted to obtain a first-rate "coffee-table" style book to commemorate my experience and to render handy various names for various sights I saw along the way. When in Peru I saw several marvelous, fat volumes which contained all the information, photgraphs and poetic insight about the awesome Inca people and their accomplishments that I would ever desire. I figured I could score one off of Amazon once I returned home.Alas, I saw none of those titles listed as currently available. This book appeared to be the best available, but it falls way short of those that I had seen in Peruvian bookstores. Slender, with only a handful of small color photos, and several older, blurry photos taken by or of Bingham (all of which I've seen countless times before), this book was really close to being sent right back to Amazon. However, there is a section in the back which contains some nice photos of various Inca artifacts which (coupled with the hassle of sending stuff back) inspired me to keep the book. I learned the sharp, bronze item I bought in Cusco is called a "knife." (I'd been incorrectly calling it a "ceremonial knife-like thing with which I think they sacrificed alpacas.")Anyway, don't be too impressed by the publisher, "Yale Press." The name perhaps sounds compelling, but scrounge around at your local used bookstore and I'm sure you can do way better for your library.

More specifically, it describes a period, when the Nazis destroyed the ghetto. The story begins on the 22nd of July 1942, the day when it became clear that residents of the ghetto would be deported. Of course, not the whole truth was told, namely that they would be deported to extermination camps. But, as we can read in the book, the average ghetto resident was well aware that the destination could never be good.Certain groups were initially exempt from deportations, including the family of Leokadia Schmidt. The family consisted of her husband, herself and their baby son. As a factory worker, Joseph Schmidt belonged to the part of the ghetto population that still was considered useful and therefore needed to stay. It was not easy to come to such a job, because, of course, everyone was after it. Joseph and Leokadia Schmidt, too, needed quite a lot of money and good connections, but they managed to achieve their intended purpose.In the meantime, the world around this family was rapidly getting smaller. In less than two months time between 250,000 and 300,000 people were deported to extermination camps. Schmidt could see how every day the next group of people to be deported was hunted down. In that period she kept a diary about it, which made the first part of the book. Eventually, the family managed to evade deportation and went into hiding elsewhere in the city.Schmidt kept up her diary all this time. She stopped journaling only when the uprising broke out in the Warsaw ghetto. After the war, the family left Europe for Venezuela in America. It was not until mid-sixties that Schmidt decided to continue where she had stopped in 1944, by also recording events after that time. It took several years before she got in touch with Oscar E. Swan, who translated the story from Polish to English. And then nothing was done for 45 years, until the oldest son of Schmidt knocked on Swan's door. The latter once again looked critically at his translation and provided it with notes, which resulted in the final book.It wasn't Schmidt's intention to publish her story as a book ever. She wanted to capture what she had seen and what she had been through, without pretensions about her qualities as a writer. Then again, it is not a book to finish in one session and it can take some time for a reader to get into the story. But it doesn't take away the fact, that Schmidt succeeded in her intention. Against all odds, this family narrowly escaped the Warsaw Ghetto and somehow managed to survive on the 'Aryan' side of town. Just imagine how truly harrowing this must have been for Leokadia Schmidt, her husband and their 5 month old baby boy...WOW.The entire time I was reading I kept thinking about the resilience of the human spirit. And, kept wondering what makes one keep going despite all odds? For me, it was as much a read in the psychology of the minds as a most interesting diary.Courage is definitely a major part of the human psyche but this diary also emphasizes compassion and how much caring for others in distress can really mean to others... Such a compelling diary and so glad that I purchased this for future reference.I did have to take numerous breaks while reading this as it is wrenching at times...Most highly recommended.

This diary of a woman, Leokadia Schmidt, who with courage, resilience and a sheer will to live survived the Warsaw Ghetto, exposes the worst of the humanity and books like these are vital less we forget.It was the necessity of giving up her child for his own safety which what haunted me the most, as a mother I cannot imagine anything more difficult. I kept this thought throughout the book, hoping against all that they would be reunited. As I do not include spoilers in my reviews you will have to read it yourself to find out the outcome.Although a first-hand diary, the impression on the reader is more distant. It reads more like a factual account with little portrayal of personal feelings. Whether the emotions were omitted by choice for privacy or necessity or were lost during the translation from Polish to English I don’t know, but without getting to know Ms. Schmidt on a more personal level it is more difficult for the reader to identify with and truly appreciate her experiences.I really appreciated the inclusion of photographs and the brief snippets about Ms. Schmidt found at the back of the book, but by then I had read the story. I would have liked this more personal information at the beginning of the book as I think it would have made the story more personal.History has an awful tendency to repeat its self and the horrific events that took place during the Holocaust don't stand alone. Similar atrocities have and will occur again. People respond to thoughts and emotions far more than facts alone. And more people need to read these stories so that the lives involved are counted and hopefully, desperately that these events are not repeated.@crushingcinders

This is a beautifully written history of a young Jewish family surviving the horrors of Warsaw during World War II. I would have found it impossible to put down with no background on the subject, but a visit 15 years ago to Warsaw made it come alive for me.My wife and I met a very generous young man who shared my love of wine; we had met online in a chatroom devoted to wine tastings, and that evening we spent a wonderful time in a grand house with at least 25 excellent wines, not only from Poland, but from several other surrounding countries.During the day, we walked through the City, and there were reminders everywhere of those terrible days when, in particular, the Red Army waited across the river while the partisans and the Germans fought to the death. Many buildings still show signs of that awful battle.And, my friend knew the history well, and showed us many aspects of Jewish life. He stopped at one corner and told us "You could be stopped to cross the street here, and a German soldier might walk up and shoot you dead for no apparent reason."He showed us deep courtyards: "Jews lived the back where the light was very poor, air circulation was non-existent, and cleanliness almost impossible.He showed us a shop, where the shop keeper lived above, a relatively rich Jewish lived in the basement, and a poorer Jewish family lived in a sub-basement.Reading this fascinating and absorbing book brought many of those memories back, and I marveled at the courage of the author -- and the beauty of her writing.Warning: this is very emotional going in several of the passages.Robert C. Read this book years ago in seminary; it was very helpful and brought clarity to many pastoral issues. Teaching in a bible college and choose this as my primary text for a Foundation of Pastoral Ministry course. Students appreciate the comprehensive treatment of pastoral ministry! Great book.
