Doctor Sleep: A Novel, by Stephen King

Amazon.com Review

An Amazon Best Book of the Month, September 2013: What ever happened to Danny Torrance? For the 36 years since The Shining was first published, the answer has been left to our imaginations. Finally we catch up with Dan as his creator envisions him: a flawed middle-aged man with a tragic past -- his special gift, "shining," dulled with age and alcohol. He's "Doctor Sleep" now, a hospice worker who eases the end of patients' lives. He also happens to be the only one who can help a little girl with her own special gift. This is not simply The Shining II. Not only does this story stand on its own, it manages to magnify the supernatural quality that first drew us to young Danny, expanding its mystery and its intensity in a way that might even reach beyond this book into the rest of the King-iverse... and beyond. (Easter egg alert: look for the nod to King's son Joe Hill's recent book N0S4A2.) --Robin A. Rothman

From Publishers Weekly

Iconic horror author King (Joyland) picks up the narrative threads of The Shining many years on. Young psychic Danny Torrance has become a middle-aged alcoholic (he now goes by Dan), bearing his powers and his guilt as equal burdens. A lucky break gets him a job in a hospice in a small New England town. Using his abilities to ease the passing of the terminally ill, he remains blissfully unaware of the actions of the True Knot, a caravan of human parasites crisscrossing the map in their RVs as they search for children with the shining (psychic abilities of the kind that Dan possesses), upon whom they feed. When a girl named Abra Stone is born with powers that dwarf Dan&'s, she attracts the attention of the True Knot&'s leader—the predatory Rose the Hat. Dan is forced to help Abra confront the Knot, and face his own lingering demons. Less terrifying than its famous predecessor, perhaps because of the author&'s obvious affection for even the most repellant characters, King&'s latest is still a gripping, taut read that provides a satisfying conclusion to Danny Torrance&'s story. Holy crap! Holy effing crap! This book was all that I hoped it would be and more. It's been a long while ago that I read the Shining but it didn't matter, things come back to you, and I didn't even really need to read the Shining to get this book. To me, it can be read as a stand alone. I'm so glad that Stephen King was moved to write Danny's book, that I got to see him as an adult and see how the aftermath of what happened to him and his mother in the Overlook Hotel. Taking it all back to his shining and adding even more mysterious and ghostly things. I'm always pleasantly surprised when a book can get one over on me, it doesn't happen often, and it did in Doctor Sleep, a few times. This is a must read book if you're a Stephen King fan, if you've read The Shining or not or if you just want to read a really freaking awesome book!

I waited and waited for King to release this book. What works here best is the continuation of the original story that began in The Shining. Admittedly, my interest in that book (it was the first by King that I read) probably colored my experience of this book. I can see how a reader would want to start with The Shining for context here.In terms of scare factor, some of the images from this book will be with me for a long while to come. A must for King fans, but I recommend it for any reader.

A fun, fast-paced follow-on to "The Shining" but not as classic-y. I rather enjoyed this story but it almost felt too contrived, and too forced. I mean, really...Vampires with pirate names that suck psychic energy (called steam) from highly psychic people? Which make the vampires younger, more psychic and able to live many, many years more than a normal human? And these old folks are computer savvy like today's teenagers? This story almost marginalizes Dan's major-league shinning abilities he had as a kid by presenting a little girl, our heroine, who has explosively more talent than Dan. Well, I tried not to get too rational while I read this but it did make me re-read "The Shining", a much better story.

I have been a King fan since the 70s. That's right. I'm a fossil. I got hooked with his first novel, Carrie. Then had to wait for a couple of years for Salem's Lot to come out. And so it went...I would read novels and short stories as soon as they were published. My favorite King's works are: The Dead Zone; The Stand; Misery; Pet Sematary; The Green Mile; The Shawshank Redemption and of course THE SHINING! Some of his more recent works have lacked something...I don't know what exactly. Perhaps passion. Maybe he's tired - - who could blame him after all this time, really. ANYWAY, I truly wanted to like this sequel to The Shining, however, it lacked the same HORROR and originality. The character development was flimsy, in my option, and closely resembled a number of other characters from his former novels. The villains were laughable and cartoonish. The storyline was predictable and dragged horribly during the middle HALF of the book. It was hardly worthy of it's predecessor. Let's face it, THE SHINING was a stand-alone masterpiece. How could a sequel possibly live up to that?

No Sleeping Here!Three days after starting this honey by King, I am sadly through the adventures of Doc and back into dull reality. The last ten percent of the book was read while standing up in the kitchen with the Kindle on the bar so false moves would not endanger the process. Its that good. King as usual does not forget a detail from The Shining and intersects the old and new tales seamlessly. A last farewell from an earlier character was the perfect touch. King never wallows in sentimentality or plays the old cards too often. He spices the new work with a bit of the past but precisely and artfully. Reading King here is putting yourself in the hands of a master again. Its familiar, its expected and one is ever disappointed. The remarkable talent which makes this book float and soar through ones mind is one of our gifts for living at this time. Other problems and current events melt away as one volunteers to be part of the book and struggle until the end.As one who has attended some meetings and read the Big Book there was even more for me to recognize and appreciate in this work.King has empathy for folks with addictions but also knows that nothing but hard work, prayer and strength changes this situation. In addition to suggesting this book to a general readership, I also highly recommend it to our friends in AA and similar groups. If one is successful in this realm, the book is celebratory and if one needs more work, this book could help. Praise to King can never be overstated no matter what subject catches his fancy.

Look, The Shining is one of my favorite books of all time. So when I saw there was a sequel I was equal parts nervous and excited (because sometimes sequels are trash compared to the original). But this is Stephen King we're talking about, so my fears were unnecessary.I LOVED that this book showed what happened to Danny after the events at the Overlook, and didn't pick up where the shining left off. Seeing how the horrors he experienced affected him was infinitely more interesting than where Wendy got a job. And to see Dan be broken by his past and then put himself back together was incredible. The book does an amazing job of showing how your past will always impact your present, but it doesn't have to ruin it.For me the True Knot and Abra storyline was interesting, but not so much as Dan's journey. It seemed almost like they were there to give Dan something to do and a way to complete his journey. That being said, some of the scenes were just as horrific as the shining, and the characters were so interesting. King is a master of his craft.

These are familiar and very easy songs, from Star Wars to Supercalifragilisticexpialidosis. The songs are from one page to three pages long. There is generally only one note per hand, but there are sometimes two notes per hand. There are not a lot of sharps or flats. It is for a beginning player or for someone who used to play and who has become very rusty. It's a pleasure to play songs that I know and enjoy. I took it to FedEx to have them spiral bind it so it opens fully and the songs are easire to play.

My Mother, who is 90 1/2 years old, wanted to play the piano again. She used to play all the time, but has not had a piano in decades. I bought her several books to accompany the 3/4 electronic keyboard that I got her. She loves the easy to play songs and the large print books and has improved an amazing amount in the last couple of months, despite three hospital stays. This book has a lot of songs that she knows, but has never played on the piano, so she really enjoys it. It was a great investment for her.

Includes songs in G, so that beginners can work on practicing without worrying about sharps and flats. I like it as an adult self-taught learner. The songs have variety (some classical, some Disney, some other favorites). The book includes suggestions for finger positions when there is a shift on the keyboard, which I also find helpful.

The kindle edition is formatted like this for the songs- one full page of music, click to next page- half page of credits for music, small half page of music. So the song is broken up by a half- or sometimes a full-page of credits. Music itself looks fine- but it should not be on kindle if it cannot be formatted in a playable way.

First let me say that I can NOT play my keyboard. I played a little as a kid and learned how to figure out what the notes are, but that's about it. I can (kind of) easily read the right hand notes, but I need to stop and figure out the left. That being said, there is not ONE song in the book that I can't figure out. Can I play? NO! Can my husband tell what song I'm messing up? YES! I'm in the process of going through every song and writing the notes next to the note on the page. At least this way I can get through the entire song. I'm having a ball with this book and it's the best one I've found so far. AND, a plus, the songs are great. Again, I can't play but with some practice, I may eventually be able to get through a couple of songs without stopping. If you can figure out the notes, this book is great!

I'm over 55 and am rediscovering the joys of playing the piano. I used to play very well. But decades have gone by and my hand eye coordination and music reading skills have diminished. After setting my ego aside, I finally bought this simple book. The absolute joy of bringing back the skills is immeasurable. So...no matter how old you are, don't let ego get in the way of having fun and smiling again.

My 8 year old son hasn't been taking lessons long, so this book is great for him because the songs are simple. He loves the fact he can play songs he knows and it motivates him to practice.

Decent beginner piano book. Has plenty of songs. I am enjoying teaching my grandson these songs.
