Review

Creative quilting brought to you by one of the best quilt designers. This book gives you exercises to follow to design your own quilts by thinking outside the block. Taking quilting in a new direction, this book frees up your creativity. Find plenty of inspiration, guidance and ideas for the adventurous quilter. Full of examples and colour photos that will make you want to quilt and quilt again. This book covers design, piecing and finishing. If you already have the first edition though, I am not sure it is worth buying the second, it is mainly the photos that have been moved around more than new content. If you do not have the first edition, then you can do no better than buy this book. It is simply superb for the contemporary quilter and those who want to learn more about the design process. (yarnsandfabrics.co.uk, 6/29/2017)This is Jean Well's 30th book and as well as being an author, she owns the Stitchin' Post in Sisters, Oregon, which she opened in 1975 and now runs with her daughter Valeri. Over the years she's won numerous awards and became the 40th inductee into the Quilters Hall of Fame in 2010. One of her great joys is teaching workshops and through collaborating with other artists, she has liberated herself from the ruler and now counts her small digital camera as her best friend. With this she has taken hundreds of photos that provide her with design and colour inspiration. The academic side of Jean's approach comes across loud and clear in the way the book is laid out. Each chapter comes with assignments and she encourages her readers and students to try each one out several times. There's a whole chapter on piecing techniques with six assignments including Rulerless Cutting and Piecing and Straight-Line inserts, each fully explained and illustrated. In essence though, this is a book of two parts: Design and Tools and Techniques. Having the right repertoire of techniques makes the design part easier but she encourages her readers to switch between the two. Jean's great gift is that she is foremostly an artist who works primarily in cloth and stitches. Many of her techniques would easily be suitable for students of other creative disciplines. The quality of her work is magnificent and it's really interesting how she transposed shapes, pattern, colour and scale from her photos onto her quilts, showing her workings-out along the way. You'll refer to this book again and again. (Popular Patchwork, August 2017)Quilters wishing to design their own art quilts will find this an invaluable resource. Jean provides a framework for learning and improving your use of journaling, abstraction, the elements and principles of design, and much more as you work to hone your artistic skills. Plenty of inspiration in the form of photographs and finished work, as well as a thorough chapter on alternative finishes for art quilts, round out this approachable guide. (Machine Quilting Unlimited, September/October 2017)I really liked this book. The chapters are well considered and take the reader through the stages of design, stitch and completion in a sensible fashion.Jean's method of quilting reminds me so much of drawing. A great sense of colour and line translate her ideas into stitched and pieced compositions that convey a message to the senses.Although the book contains a lot of information it leads the reader lightly through the stages of inspiration and design to the nuts and bolts of construction. A final section with ideas for finishing techniques gives suggestions that all textile artists would find useful. In this context, the sections on abstraction and elements of design were particularly welcome. This is a book to keep handy. I have a feeling that I am going to be dipping into it rather a lot. (Workshop on the Web, September 2017)Although primarily intended for quilters, the first section of this book is about stepping out of the box to look at design, using colour, line, scale, shape, harmony, pattern and texture, as well as discussing the principles of design. These skills are easily transferable and essential for any weaver, especially tapestry weavers. The section on colour is particularly interesting, as Jean talks at length about 'pushing a palette' by taking the intended colour, making it lighter, brighter, duller and darker, and goes on to consider monochromatic, analogous and complementary colours, as well as accented neutral colours. She continues by discussing value and contrast, intensity, temperature, seasons, personality of colours, and palettes that relate to places and things. The book is very well written with clear, precise text and beautiful photographs. For anyone thinking about design, colour and texture in weaving, I can thoroughly recommend this book, as it will certainly open your eyes and make you look at your surroundings in a completely different light. The second part of the book is Tools & Techniques used in quilting, so less relevant to weavers. (The Journal for Weavers, Spinners & Dyers, Winter 2017)

Let me start off by saying that Jean Wells' work as featured in this book is both spectacular and inspiring. Jean is clearly an accomplished art quilter who easily translates the world around her into beautiful works of abstract fiber art. Her color palettes are gorgeous, and her use of line and stitch to draw attention to the story she is telling is excellent. Unfortunately, the book fell short for me as a primer on design. The book is broken into three main sections: Design, Tools and Techniques, and Continuing the Journey. The design section includes commentary on how Jean incorporates the basics of design--line, scale, shape, color, etc., into her work. There are ample pictures of her quilts along with the photos that inspired them. But for me at least, I had trouble making firm connections in my mind on how Jean got from Point A to Point B, based on her commentary. Design exercises are referenced, but they are few and far between, and even they seem a bit nebulous to me. Maybe I'm just too left brained to make the connections easily...I think I would have benefited from more concrete explanations on Jean's process. Not a bad book...it just wasn't the right book for me to really absorb the lessons on design that it presents. With that said, I buy and read a number of books on art quilting and the creative process to assist me in my own artistic practice. I find that I will go back after a period of time and re-read the books I have, and very often find that my original impressions about a book have morphed. Works that really resonated with me on first read seem too basic, and works that seemed abstract and disjointed in their presentation often become clearer. I hope that's what happens with 'Intuitive Color & Design: Adventures in Art Quilting.'

It was almost exactly the same as her previous book which, I have and love, not worth buying.

I like this book although it makes me a bit uncomfortable. Let me explain...all of my previous quilting projects (with the exclusion of one-block wonder quilts - See my review of "One-Block Wonders of the World") have been traditional and from patterns. This book is kind of a cut and slash free style process that results in an abstract products that I'm not quite comfortable with and I'm not even sure I like. Heck, I'm just barely getting interested in some of the modern quilt esthetics. With that said, I felt the book was well written and if intuitive design is your thing, you will really like this book. The only thing I didn't like about the book was its constant reference to information on other pages that you were supposed to read or look at. I found that quite annoying.I'm glad I purchased this book because it gave me some exposure to this abstract art form. You never know...someday I may just decide to give this style of quilting a try.

I have a copy of the first edition. Not much has changed - not worth buying the 2nd edition. If you don't have the first, this is a good book

Intuitive Color & Design: Adventures in Art QuiltingJean Wells' book has been a real game changer for me. Until I read this book, I thought quilting meant blocks, rows, and sashing with straight even lines and predictable color palettes. Then, I purchased Jean's book on Amazon.com.If you dream of the day you will be "cutting without rulers", then dear reader, dream no more. Jean generously shares her exquisite design, color inspiration, and unique cutting and finishing skills in this 95-page butt kicker of a quilting book. "Cross Cut II" on page 55 keeps me awake at night wondering how in the world she did it.The color matching and photography is nothing short of stunning and encourages readers to journal, sketch, and pay attention to what their eye is drawn to - that's to develop the intuitive part. She also is a big proponent of pairing up with a quilting partner and giving each other quilting assignments. Personally, I would love that. Quilting for me is not a team sport, but wouldn't it be fun if it were!Bottom line: I love this book from start to finish including the page layout, the font, and the clean and uncluttered pages.Throw away those templates and patterns, people! This book will leave you swimming in your own creative juices and doing the backstroke once you get into the flow of it.

I have been a traditional quilter, only making two original quilts in the many years since I've learned the craft. I want to branch out and let my creativity flourish with more modern and artsy quilts. I am retiring later this year and have been looking for an exciting learning opportunity in the quilt world as a way to celebrate this new phase in my life. I saw a four-day class by Jean Wells being offered that caught my eye. I decided to buy this book as well as her "Journey to Inspired Art Quilting" to make sure her methods were something into which I could immerse myself. I am now even more excited and find myself looking at colors and lines in all around me in a different way. The creative juices are flowing already!

I purchased this book as an intro to color theory handbook and I wasn't disappointed. I am learning tenamel, and overview f clor and exercises are quite good. One caveat: If you aren't a quilter or fabric artist, read the tips on introducing warm colors to a cool scheme and vice versa carefully. The advice is good--but the question of percentages of color requires attention to detail. Overal this book helps the reader to look at the world a different way.

Love the abstract lines in all the quilts, pillows and artful projects shown by Jean. This is nature at its finest, using nature and things we see everyday to be the inspiration for each assignment. The way she explains the use of colors and how they compliment each other by using the color wheel was very informative. I can't wait to explore on my own!
