I hesitated about whether to review this book, because the information is *very* good. Brunson and Walberg know Linux, and they're decent writers, too. A rare combo in the tech field. The reason I knocked off two stars was due entirely to Pearson and their garbage software. It's not bad enough that you have to dig a USB optical drive out of your attic in order to install the software. No, the practice exams aren't actually *ON* the DVD ... it just installs some ancient front-end that "talks" to Pearson's DRM server to allow you to access a download of the practice exams. Whoever came up with this idea should be immediately fired. It flat out did not work on Windows 10, and don't ever think you're going to be able to run this software on Linux itself. Disgraceful. (Do I sound annoyed about this yet?)I emailed Pearson's tech support and got a canned response. Never got a human, just a survey about "how well they'd helped me," which I answered quite bluntly. Bundling useless software with good material just frustrates the student. Sybex does it the right way, where it's all web-based.But as I mentioned at the beginning, the information in this book is sound. If you read it and understand, you will pass the exam. I did not use this book much because of the frustration I experienced with the software the night before taking LX0-103, so I didn't use at all for LX0-104. But I have flipped through this book and read at least half of every chapter. It's a shame that the quality of the text is offset by the awful software (I keep going on about it but I bought this book specifically for the practice exams). Passed both my exams by a good margin and am now Linux+/LPIC-1 certified.

Really well written. By that i mean it's not written like a dense technical manual (although who doesn't love a technical manual?). I can really feel like the author is trying to pour their knowledge into my head. I especially enjoy the parts where they give you a real world example of why you need to do something in order to avoid a bad scenario from happening. I'm planning to take my Comptia Linux plus in the next two months. I am still supplementing this with training videos and online articles. That's not to say this book isn't good at prepping you for the Linux+ exam, but i prefer to have multiple sources of information when going through a certification.Would certainly recommend you buying this book if you are looking to get certified, or even if you just really want to learn more about linux in general and are still at a more "entry level" like I am.

I bought a few different books and used free sources to study for the Linux+ / LPIC-1 exams. This book is probably the best one out there. Also, the testing software that comes with it is better than it's next best rival, the Sybex book / test questions. As other people often do, I'd caution that you still want to use other sources; especially regarding linux, you'll find lots of good, free stuff out there. In places where I wanted a deeper understanding, I would end up finding good answers on one of the (many) linux sites out there. However, this book is a great way to keep a lot of it right in front of you so you don't need to look up everything on the web yourself.

Wow! This book helped me in more ways than I could have previously thought. I passed on the first go and the included practice tests are essential and very similar to the actual exam.

If you already have some dipping-the-toes experience with Linux, this is a great resource to work through and make sure you've got your bases covered before the tests. I just took the 103 test and passed on my first try. That alone warrants a thumbs up from me! Overall, the book is more focused on developing you as a real-world sysadmin as opposed to someone who'll regurgitate the right answers for a multiple choice test. Which is great. Of course, the material is structured alongside the exam objectives so you'll know you'll be prepared for the tests.Of course, no one resource will cover EVERYTHING, but this book covers pretty much everything you'll need to know and then some. The only additional study resource I needed were Linux man pages, because those go more in-depth with the commands you work with, and you'll need to know how to use them in ways that aren't covered in the book. There is practice material on a provided DVD which is kind of a "C'mon man...". It really should be in the cloud these days. I don't have a DVD drive on my macbook. I used the CompTIA Linux+ Certmaster Practice web app instead, which I think is awesome. It's an extra hundred bucks on top of your exam voucher and you get a retake voucher as well. However, I can't speak for the absolute beginner's experience with this book. Before tackling it, you might be better off consulting other resources to get your feet wet (installing Linux on a virtual machine and getting familiar with the command line).

I used this book, CBT Nuggets, and Linux+/LPIC-1 All-In-One. This book was much harder to read and follow than CBT or All-In-One. I couldn't reasonably pass the end of chapter exams in this book, even though I read this book AFTER CBT and All-In-One. The All-In-One made more sense, and even co-incided with CBT Nuggets videos.I still kind of recommend it because if you're new to Linux, getting information from different sources is still useful.

I'm very happy with this textbook. It seems to be chock full of well organized information. I've just started formally learning Linux after 15 years or so of personal/professional use. I feel that I have really learned something after completing each chapter.

Amazon.com Review

Amazon Best Books of the Month for Kids, April 2012: The Pigeon is back (hooray!) and this time the drama centers on an adorable little duckling who gets a cookie just by asking--politely. Just by asking?! Politely reminds the duckling, but the Pigeon is already off on a hilarious rant about all the things he asks for--many of which readers of the earlier Pigeon books will remember--ending with the all-too-familiar refrain, “It’s not fair.” Author Mo Willems adds a new twist to this Pigeon story by juxtaposing Pigeon’s familiar high volume theatrics with the calm simplicity of a soft-spoken duckling. As a parent, I appreciate the book’s message about the power of politeness and the rewards of sharing (warning: cookies are involved), yet the story never loses the jovial, high-spirited quality that makes the Pigeon books so popular with kids and the adults who read to them. --Seira Wilson Amazon Exclusive: The Pigeon: A Life in Pictures (Click on images to enlarge) Back in 1993, I was cartooning for a ’zine. Due to a lack of other material, we decided to make the December issue a sketchbook with just my cartoons. I have been producing small cartoon and story sketchbooks for clients and pals every year since then. In 1998, my sketchbook featured a new character, the Pigeon. Born in the margins of a 1997 notebook filled with potential picture book ideas, he was complaining that his ideas were better than mine. To mollify him, I put him in that year’s sketchbook. The original sketchbook was much longer than the final published volume, but some of the lines were the same. In late 1999, an agent essentially agreed with the Pigeon and rejected my picture book ideas. She suggested I revisit my sketchbook with an eye to turning it into a picture book. My wife was working at a school library at the time and had read the sketchbook to her kids, who had enjoyed it. So I suppose it wasn’t too crazy an idea. I started to revise the layout and work with color. At the end of 2001, after several dozen rejections because the book was “unusual,” an editor decided that “unusual” was a good thing. Plus, it made her laugh. I began reworking and rewriting. The Pigeon was now starting to look more like his mature self. Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus! was published in April 2003 and, to my surprise, proved to be popular quite quickly. Thankfully, that Pigeon doodle in the notebook back in 1997 was so insistent. He was right!

From Booklist

Pigeon is back, in all of his indignant, passive-aggressive glory, overwrought this time at one gross injustice: a cute little duckling is now on the scene and has been rewarded a cookie (with nuts) for doing nothing more than asking for it politely. Pigeon pulls out all of the usual pigeon stops—coy glances, cartwheels, and crocodile tears—in the hopes of securing a cookie for himself . . . and it works! The duckling shares. As with the other titles in the Pigeon series, simple pencil drawings on pale, blank backgrounds focus our attention on the characters’ interactions. Willems has an extraordinary ability to convey immediate, deep characterization with a few deft strokes. He knows, too, how to spread the action across a picture book, carefully managing the panels and page turns to ramp up the drama. Fans will delight at another outing, and the protagonist’s indelible pigeonality will welcome newcomers to the club. HIGH-DEMAND BACKSTORY: Pigeon is a beloved character, and his legions of fans will clamor for this, the seventh Pigeon book from hugely popular, award-winning Willems. Preschool-Kindergarten. --Thom Barthelmess

The Duckling gets a cookie by Moe WilisAudio children's book about a pigeon and he's angry that the duckling gets a cookie by asking nicely.Pigeon asks for a lot of things and he never gets them. The duckling explains how he can get a cookie himself.I received this book from National Library Service for my BARD (Braille Audio Reading Device).

Can not say enough of how much we love these books! We received couple of the Pigeon series for our son's 3rd birthday from our friend who is a school counselor. She said the kids at her school loved these books and that it was really great for development. At first, I wasn't sure how I felt about the books as the characters (mainly Pigeon) flies off the handle and has quite the melt downs and tantrums (I was afraid my son would think it was funny and acceptable to behave this way too) but soon I realized that wasn't the case. The characters have full and complex emotions such as frustration and sadness and that really connected with my son because he gets frustrated and sad too. My 3 year old son and I talked about why the character was angry, frustrated, and/or sad and now my son tells me when he feels angry, frustrated or sad. It really is great for child development! But that involves the parents talking about the book and why the characters and behaving the way they are. We will be continually adding the Pigeon series to our collection. I have NOT been given these books for free or at a discount. I offer you my 100% unbiased recommendation.

Mo Willems never ceases to get laughs out of the little ones. This Pigeon book has the duckling politely asking for a cookie and receiving it, while the pigeon acts like his typical self and goes on a little rant about it. The duckling proceeds to give the Pigeon his cookie and then goes away and asks for another cookie but this time with no nuts. It is entertaining and funny. My 3 year old daughter likes to reenact this book. It is one of our favorites in the Pigeon series.

We love Mo Willems books of all sorts, but have a special love of the Pigeon series. Perhaps I think that because of the great voices my wife uses when reading these books in particular (almost as good as her Gerald and Piggy voices). Regardless, this book has a great message about asking nicely for things. I don't think this will replace our love of the earlier Pigeon books, like Don't let the Pigeon Stay Up Late, but this is still a good book. Our girls both like it (5 and 8), even though our older daughter rarely looks at picture books any more. She still likes Mo Willems' books. I recommend them all. If you don't have any of the Pigeon books, however, start with an earlier one and work you way to this one. It's good, but it's not his best. Still worth five stars though.

I'm the asking-est pigeon in town! This book might be my favorite of the pigeon series. The litany of things the pigeon has asked for is truly funny, and so easy to read aloud (with personality!) to the kids. My three year old has them memorized, and "reads" them to me, which is truly priceless, especially considering the way he imitates the motions the pigeon is doing in the book. If you like the Pigeon series, this book will not disappoint. If you want to skip one, skip Pigeon Takes A Bath and get this one instead. Maybe your kids will start asking for french fry robots too.

My daughter and I love Mo Willems and all the Pigeon books that he writes. I bought this for my daughter after we received the book, "Don't Let The Pigeon Drive the Bus", it's another hilarious, cute, and enjoyable book. This book teaches how to be polite and how to share. The hardcovers are always best because they stay in great condition. This book has met our expectations and at the moment we will continue to purchase more Pigeon books.

Mo Willems is a wonderful children's author. His books are funny, sarcastic, and just plain fun. I began reading these to my son and eventually he wanted to read them to me. It was such a great transition. He would bring me the books and ask me to read them with him. I only wish Mr. Willems could repeat this formula in every age bracket through high school because finding books gets more and more challenging.

These pigeon books are the BEST stories for kids. The pigeon is just like one of your children. Lol!

Seriously, I'd read this book even without the kids. It's so funny if you've already read the other Pigeon books. My kids were rolling on the floor.

#22,828 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

In 1975 I was a 15 year old kid reading John's articles in Horse & Rider. Now I'm a 57 year old endurance rider with over 9,000 miles of competition and I was thrilled when my husband bought this book for me on a whim and I recognized Gizmo's name. I expected a very simple "rain today" type logbook written by a young man. Instead I got an incredibly articulate account through the eyes of a highly educated man 40 years after he accomplished an epic journey. Beautifully written. I wish it hadn't ended. I happened to be reading it this week when I had to put down my horse Kaboot who was "my Gizmo" after 24 years of partnership. We had completed 3050 miles of competition (many more in training), been through some very tough situations, 7 one day 100 milers and plenty of 50 mile races in rain, lightning, lost, etc, but I would not even think of doing what he did for one week. I *know* how it feels to be cold and wet and in lightning, but I was always able to get dry and safe. I can't even begin to comprehend what it took to do that day after day with only the gear on my horse, no tent, just a poncho. As a serious distance rider I really appreciated the skill it took to get through and details that a horseman would appreciate, like that Gizmo wore a double 00 shoe, and the make of his saddle, details that we care about. It was very comforting to read his accounts of being in my shoes, sharing such a huge chunk of our lives with a horse and just to feel someone else understood how close the bond can be. Thank you for this book. It is a gem.

The plot of the story is as simple as the title, yet the writing makes it come alive. What I enjoyed most, though, was the respect the writer showed for people and animals, giving them the dignity they deserve. He admitted to shedding tears at times for some of the living creatures who crossed his path and met their end.His writing reminded me of James Herriot, who in his books, likewise showed respect for both the people and the animals he encountered.I also appreciated that the writer did not include details on sexual encounters and swear words were minimal.Anyone who ever imagined taking off on a horse for parts unknown, outdoor lovers, or even people like me who prefer to read about adventures rather than take off on them, would enjoy this book.

My pal Daniel Boling (songwriter and singer) posted about this on Facebook. Bought it on Kindle, now buying hard copies for two friends. A great adventure story with snakes, scorpions, human predators, an extraordinary friendship between the author and a 4-year-old Quarter Horse gelding and America. The lovely thing about the written word is the chance it gives readers to vicariously experience such stuff!

A must read! I love stories of long journeys, and this one works for me. It's a tale of adventure and a kind of coming of age that could maybe only happen in 1974 - and perhaps only be written now. The world has moved on and we have changed. The author looks back on this rich journey across his native America with the perspective of time, exploring his early life, from learning to be alone to the growing impetus to to take on such a momentous ride and beyond. As he relates his tale, with anecdotes that sometimes put you in mind of listening to a cowboy by the campfire, Egenes flicks easily between times in the past. Populated by myriad characters and other living creatures (not always friendly) in the changing landscape, his account is interspersed with personal philosophy and hung on the backbone of his relationship with the wonderful Gizmo.

Can you rate this 10 stars out of 5? This an AWESOME book written by a good friend of mine, Dr John Egenes! I had privilege to read and comment on an earlier draft of the book! This true story will make laugh, cry and make you think back over 40 years ago when life was simpler and in many way much better! Please support John and Gizmo's adventure! I promise you will not regret it! Many Thanks, Kirk

Disclaimer: The author is a friend of mine. I'd known of his adventure with Gizmo for years and had always hoped he'd put the story in writing."Man & Horse" is all I'd hoped it would be. The adventure would be compelling told by anyone but John has a way with words. No surprise since he's a talented songwriter. His language is simple, direct and I couldn't put the book down. I finished it in two sittings over a 24 hour period.John's description of being bitten several times by a black widow spider made me feel his excruciating pain. His encounter with a nasty mayor and deputy showed the patience he'd learned on the ride and from Gizmo. His self-deprecation appears throughout the book and I know that it is genuine. He's not a grandstander and that becomes obvious. His love, concern and admiration for Gizmo runs throughout the book and his telling of Gizmo's passing years after the ride was over brought a tear to my eye although it was not a maudlin telling. When John waxes philosophical, as he does now and again, he speaks with a wisdom learned from decades of living in the world of music and the world of horses. His wisdom is deceptively simple yet it is obvious he's spent a good deal of time mulling it over. He doesn't beat one over the head with it but just lets it flow as a part of his narrative. And a provocative narrative it is!Thank you, John.

Such a fabulous book, I haven't read anything like it in a long time. Egenes writes a strong crisp account of his trek across America on the back of his beloved horse, Gizmo. The story of how John and Gizmo grow up along the trip, and the depth of the relationship that John has with Gizmo, is the beating heart of the book. Along the way, their adventures and encounters run from abandoned desert windmills to hot city pavement, from friendly farmers to crooked politicians, giving a series of snapshots of life in a vanished America. Utterly recommended!
