From the Inside Flap

In the tradition of such trailblazing books as No Logo and The Tipping Point, In Praise of Slow heralds a growing international movement of people dedicated to slowing down the pace of our contemporary times and enjoying a richer, fuller life as a result. These days, almost everyone complains about the hectic pace of their lives. We live in a world where speed rules and everyone is under pressure to go faster. But when speed is king, anyone or anything that gets in our way, that slows us down, becomes an enemy. Thanks to speed, we are living in the age of rage. Carl Honore has discovered a movement that is quickly working its way into the mainstream. Groups of people are developing a recipe for living better in a fast-paced, modern environment by striving for a new balance between fast and slow. In an entertaining and hands-on investigation of this new movement, Honore takes us from a Tantric sex workshop in a trendy neighbourhood in London, England to Bra, Italy, the home of the Slow Food, Slow Cities and Slow Sex movements. He examines how we can continue to live productive lives by embracing the tenets of the slow movement. A challenging take on the cult of speed, as well as a corrective look at how we can approach our lives with new understanding, In Praise of Slow uncovers a movement whose time has come.

I had already begun to explore the possibility of slowing down to smell the roses when I learned the founder of Peacemaker Ministries, Ken Sande, had been diagnosed with cancer. That hit me pretty hard. He is a fellow lawyer, just a few years older than me. He posted a blog where he discussed how cancer had deepened his relationships. And that started me thinking about how speed kills...relationships. Everything about our fast-paced society sucks the life-blood from our relationships: e-mails and texts rather than face-to-face communication; more time at work and less time at home; meals behind the wheel rather than at the dinner table; shallow, surface level relationships rather than deep, strong relationships. I have been dealing with deadlines, calendar conflicts, and time-famine for 31 years in my legal career. Earlier this year I had decided to simplify my life and begin a strategic slow-down of my law practice. I wanted to invest more time into relationships and gradually start a transition into more mediations. Ken's cancer diagnosis highlighted the ultimate deadline we all face, which is death. No one ever said on their deathbed, "I wish I'd spent more time at the office."It was about that time I discovered Carl Honore in a TED Talk http://www.ted.com/talks/carl_honore_praises_slowness?lahnguage=enAfter watching his TED Talk, I couldn't wait to read his book, In Praise of Slowness, which was a sure sign I NEEDED to read this book. I had already read Dr. Richard Swenson's books, Margin, Balance, and Contentment, so In Praise of Slowness was a natural follow-up. And it certainly was a word in due season for me. I had already been thinking about doing some writing and speaking on the topic of lawyers (and the general public) slowing down to invest more time in relationships, and In Praise of Slowness not only reaffirmed that mission in my mind, but it inspired me to take action in my own life NOW! http://hikerdude.wordpress.com/2014/08/25/my-present-the-someday-movement-part-one/Carl's challenge to the cult of speed is a must read for everyone who wants to deal with their speed demons. His exploration of our addiction to speed was fascinating to me. He not only examines how we got to this place, but also introduces the reader to the concepts of slow food, slow cities, slow thinking, slow medicine (there's a reason they're called patients), slow sex, increasing productivity by slower working, slowing down to rest, and raising slower children. His book is also a great resource for connecting to web sites and reading material on the slow movement, which has been, not surprisingly, slow to catch on in the United States. I know I still have a long way to go in this slowing down process, but this book was an invaluable roadmap I received at the beginning of this long journey.By the way, Ken Sande is now cancer free, and I am now reading Carl's most recent book, The Slow Fix.

The title of this book is somewhat misleading because the author is not in favor of being slow, but of slowing down, which is not necessarily the same thing. The premise of the book is that our society is obsessed with speed. As a result our lives have become insufferably hectic and busy. We are under overt and subtle pressure to do as many things as possible. The only way to do them all is to rush through them, thus the obsession with speed. The problem is that as everyone speeds up, what was once fast becomes normal, and so we have to speed up again. Of course, eventually society will reach a point (I think that we had already or we are very close to it) when going even faster will become physically impossible. There is only so much that human beings can take before they burn out and collapse. But that is a poor consolation. I don’t know about you, but I don’t want to live in a world that wants to get even more frantic and hectic but it cannot because it had already reached its limits.A word has to be given on what in this book is meant by “slow” and “fast.” Fast can mean fast, like driving cars dangerously fast (we get a chapter on that in the book), but generally speaking “fast” is a synonym for intensity and overworking. Take office workers (there is a chapter on that too) as example. Physically, they do not work faster than office workers in past generations. But because they are burdened with a much heavier workload, they have to work long hours past the time they should be back home. Forget 9 to 5. Now it is often 9 to 8 or even 9 to 10.Similarly, “slow” does not have to mean slow in the physical sense of that word. Slow means working at a pace that is comfortable for you. You can still work hard and fast at what you do, but you should also work at a pace that is optimal for you and you should devote only as many hours to it as you feel comfortable.Other than the introduction, the author does not talk much about where the cult of speed had come from. I find it regrettable because the topic is of interest to me. The author says that the cult of speed essentially emerged in the 19th century with the rise of factories and modern capitalism. Because workers were paid per hour and not per product, management wanted to squeeze as much productivity from them as possible by making them work even faster. A worker who makes thirty radios per hour gets paid as much as the worker who makes ten radios per hour, but now his bosses have three times as many radios to sell and make profit from. Why I do agree that industrialization was no doubt a factor, I think that there is more to that story. I wish that the author had devoted more space to exploring this topic. The bulk of the book is about different areas of human life and different people and groups who are fighting to slow things down. I won’t go over them all. There is not enough space for that. We get a discussion of such things as slower medicine, raising kids in a more relaxed manner, creating cities with less traffic, slower and better sex, slow cuisine and eating, etc. All of these things are interesting and they gave me ideas on how to slow down in certain areas of my own life. The problem with this advice, and the author admits that this is a problem, is that all these “slow down” activities appear to be mainly for the rich and the middle class. For example, there is a chapter about slowing down in the office. It is not strictly about office work, but all of it is about white collar type of workplaces. How about slowing down at McDonalds or Walmart? I had a number of low-wage blue collar jobs in my life and I can tell you that if you go to see your boss and talk about slowing down, this probably is going to be your last day working in that place.Another example, the author meets and talks a lot with the people involved in the slow movement. Without exception, all of them are white collar professionals. He attends workshops, clubs, meetings and gatherings. At no point does he meet there someone coming from the working class (i.e. poor). Or at least he never mentions it. All these people are middle class people.Still, a lot of the advice in the book can be used by everyone. For example, the author talks about cutting down on TV and instead spending more time with friends and family. Yes, I know that when you come back home after a long day of work you are exhausted and want to crash on the couch and let your brain go for a walk while you watch some idiocy on the TV. Been there, done that. But if you actually make the effort to spend that time on meeting with other people (provided that these are people whom you like, of course), you will soon feel fresh energy and feel relaxed and happy.Besides, even if the slow movement is a middle class thing, it might eventually trigger changes that will trickle down and spread out to all levels of society. Of course, opponents will immediately say that if you do that, the economy will collapse. The author does address this critique. For one, obsession with speed is causing the economy hundreds of billions of dollars per year. Think about all the car accidents caused by speeding or all the health problems caused by stress and overwork. Not to mention that rushing often results in end product that is of shoddy quality, which in turn results in customer complaints, recalls and need for corrections that cost businesses more in the long run than had they taken things easy. Also, slowing down would mean more time for leisure. Leisure will create new job opportunities. For example, if people spend less time driving and more time walking in a park, that will create demand for people to design, build and maintain parks. If people start going more to various workshops, then someone will have to run these workshops. But the fact is that no matter how you slice and dice it, capitalism won’t be able to maintain current levels of profit and growth. But so what? What is so great about growth and profits anyway? Just look at the state of the world. For the past few decades we had steady growth and profits. Individual corporations might fail and go bankrupt, but overall they are making a killing and their economic, social and political power is steadily on the increase. So what? The ecosystem is dying, the rich are getting richer, the poor are getting poorer and we have to work ever harder to maintain the same standard of living. In the Bible there is a passage where Jesus says that Sabbath was made for the people and not the people for the Sabbath. Is the economy supposed to serve the people, or are we supposed to sacrifice our health and happiness for the economy? Please, slow down.

It has taken me 14 months to read this book and I still haven't fully completed it. Trying to savor the experience and not rush through it.

Good "Pommy" detective yarn with a bit of a twist at the end. A good read and definitely a page turner. Maybe the author could do a little bit more work on the characters who seem a trifle shallow to me. Probably because I haven't read enough of the series to get the characters' background. Mr. Ross's style is laid back and the police people are very believable following detecting procedures which leads them to solving crimes with minimal fuss and gore - unlike stories of American police who charge in, guns blazing and bodies stacking up. I've read a couple of L J Ross's work and will definitely buy some more.

Having read all previous DCI Ryan mysteries in the LJ Ross series I continue to enjoy these novels from cover-to-cover.Really find the comfort level provided by the continuing evolution of each main character... from their introduction in Holy Island to the deepening inter-personal relationships that have developed through the series. I find that when a new book in the Series is published, it's like a chance to re-connect with a "group of close friends" to catch up on how they are getting on since your last "encounter".Beginning initially with the audible edition in Book 1, then reading a Kindle edition for others in the Series including Cragside, allows me to "hear" the individual personalities when reading each page.Do hope that LJ Ross continues to find intricate challenges for this unique ensemble combination of characters.

Oh Cragside ...you did not disappoint! I have so many memories of Cragside having been taken there by my family when I was a child & then taking my own family there many times for picnics & to walk round the grounds & house. So there were lots of memories evoked by this book. The plot was good as usual with lots of twists & turns & the characters were strong. Loved it all...& already have the next Ryan book loaded on my Kindle.

The beginning of the story documents a horrific shipyard accident. The way the drama unfolds with a unique cast of characters is incredible. The descriptions of the restoration of a magnificent historic mansion keep your interest with the interaction .The story never lags , there is constant action and you don't want to stop reading. This is a repeat read like all DCI Ryan mysteries.

Taking a break from the serial killers and intense narrative of previous books this once seemed to be more of a cozy mystery. That being said. It was no less enjoyable than previous books, just different. Ross is a great writer and the plot moves quickly and the mystery keeps you guessing to the very end. Ross continues to feature settings for her DCI Ryan books that are places I would love to see someday.

I'm not sure why this book has Ryan as the head character. His underlings do most of the work. There is a backstory about another serial killer, The Hacker, but I didn't see the point. Finally, disguising the characters which are one person under a plural pronoun frustrated me. Why not use "person" rather than than "they" in that circumstance?

Not riviting as previous books in this good series. Plot feels contrived. The use of THEY as a singular pronoun is confusing and lazy. Other words would be more literary and descriptive. "Two arms thrust through the darkness" is better than "They reached ..." "The evil presence pursued her" or "Footsteps followed close behind her" add more emotion than "they did this".

I have read all of this series and hope it continues. Good characters with just enough personal details and information to make them interesting and bond as a team with out becoming the story. Also like the realism of the story taking place in a real location. Well done.

#62,829 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

I've purchased a LOT of guitar instruction books over the last 3 years of guitar playing. My focus is Blues, hence me picking this book up. What I like MOST about this book is, it is SIMPLE in it's instruction and approach, yet the ideas are really rooted in musical theory. It does NOT clog up pages with music theory. I have a TON of books that do, and end up putting those down because I'm just not there most of the time on concepts, and I JUST LIKE PLAYING GUITAR. I don't always want to THINK ABOUT STUFF when I'm playing. I have used this book consistently for over a year now, and I LOVE it!!! Some of the reasons I like it are: there are a LOT of examples in each chapter, and they progress at a manageable pace. The examples are MUSICAL. Big bonus. The examples are not too difficult causing frustration, and not too hard causing boredom. I've learned a LOT of really great chords using this book.!:-)The way I practice is, I'll go thru a chapter, all the examples, and then spend about a week each chapter, then go to the next chapter, then repeat the previous chapter. I just keep repeating the older ideas along with the stuff I just learned. This is not a super in depth "music theory" guide, but rather a really logical guide with just enough info so you grasp the concept. You're not bogged down in theory. I use this book and maybe only one or two others more than ANY other guide books I've bought. This is PERFECT. If you're into the blues, the ONLY other one I use as much as this one is "Blues you can use," which is awesome as well, and worth purchasing.I feel like I know what I'm talking about as I've purchased about 30 instruction books trying to find something that works for ME. We all learn differently, but this one is really worth looking into if my story sounds similar to the way you like to practice/study. And maybe I'll see ya out on the road eventually! :-)

I retired this year and learn to play the Blues Guitar was on the top of my to do list. I have been messing around with trying to learn to play the guitar for over 40 years. I have tried private lessons, books and videos but nothing has ever really clicked for me. After giving it a go I usually give up in frustration and my guitar returns to the deep recesses of my closet waiting for the next time I get inspired.I started by digging out my old materials and started watching lessons on YouTube. Although this was helpful I soon discovered that I had no real direction and was not sure that I was progressing. So I decided to look for a book series that would give me a framework or curriculum to work with. After a lot of research I found this book and have been using it for two weeks. I can say that I have made more progress in this time than I have ever made in my past attempts. The lessons are easy to understand and build in a very logical order. They get to the point and get you playing right away. The audio and backing tracks make the lessons fun and challenging. I look forward to practicing every day and believe I have finally found a book that will help me reach my guitar goals.

Excellent book in an excellent series. Not only is the information provided in a progressive, easy to approach format, but the amount of information is staggering. For each style or idea, tracks and artists are mentioned so the student can hear what this technique can produce with some practice. The information itself is easy to understand with no musical theory, but for those with some musical theory, the exercises themselves can be analyzed and the patterns can then be adapted across the fret board. The provided audio tracks not only provide audible examples of the exercises, but also has tracks with a backing band playing in a specific chord progression. This allows the student to practice by playing with a band that stays on time, wont yell at you for messing up, and they never mess up the form! I am a book nerd that went to music school for percussion, but now play mainly strings. As a result, I will read and buy any and every type of book available. I've seen method books galore on a variety of instruments and not only is this specific book a good resource, the entire series is very high quality. This book will not only get you playing blues rhythm guitar in a short amount of time (after the first couple exercises I felt like I was really jamming some blues) , it will provide tools for you to improve your playing, improve your knowledge of form and the function of the form, and help the player to add variety to a standard progression (specifically where it shows how to mix in different chord inversions/constructions, melodic motives and broken syncopated concepts).

I bought the first three volumes of this series, and figured I'd review this one since it's the most likely one someone would purchase first. I've been playing just about anything with strings for more decades than I'd like to think about, and I own hundreds of technical music books. I'm always looking for interesting approaches, different ways of looking at theory and application, and, especially pertinent regarding Mr. Alexander's works, the most efficient ways to teach. So here it is: if you're a relative novice looking to play blues or rock, you'll be wasting a lot of time if you buy any other book.'Complete Guide' bypasses everything you don't need to know (you can waste years on that stuff), and provides a comprehensive, standard, easily applied method of learning rhythm and lead for blues, which is the basis of rock and much of jazz. With a bit of effort, you'll get to the point that you can play with others faster using Mr. Alexander's method much more quickly than if you'd gone to music school or tried another approach. The sound files are very helpful, later books in this series seamlessly build on the material presented here, and if you want to later try any of the Jazz or 'modern guitar' material, you'll be treading comfortably familiar ground.I'd thought it had all been written, and than nobody could add much to the genre. I was wrong. Buy this one, you'll be glad you did.
