In 1975 I was a 15 year old kid reading John's articles in Horse & Rider. Now I'm a 57 year old endurance rider with over 9,000 miles of competition and I was thrilled when my husband bought this book for me on a whim and I recognized Gizmo's name. I expected a very simple "rain today" type logbook written by a young man. Instead I got an incredibly articulate account through the eyes of a highly educated man 40 years after he accomplished an epic journey. Beautifully written. I wish it hadn't ended. I happened to be reading it this week when I had to put down my horse Kaboot who was "my Gizmo" after 24 years of partnership. We had completed 3050 miles of competition (many more in training), been through some very tough situations, 7 one day 100 milers and plenty of 50 mile races in rain, lightning, lost, etc, but I would not even think of doing what he did for one week. I *know* how it feels to be cold and wet and in lightning, but I was always able to get dry and safe. I can't even begin to comprehend what it took to do that day after day with only the gear on my horse, no tent, just a poncho. As a serious distance rider I really appreciated the skill it took to get through and details that a horseman would appreciate, like that Gizmo wore a double 00 shoe, and the make of his saddle, details that we care about. It was very comforting to read his accounts of being in my shoes, sharing such a huge chunk of our lives with a horse and just to feel someone else understood how close the bond can be. Thank you for this book. It is a gem.

The plot of the story is as simple as the title, yet the writing makes it come alive. What I enjoyed most, though, was the respect the writer showed for people and animals, giving them the dignity they deserve. He admitted to shedding tears at times for some of the living creatures who crossed his path and met their end.His writing reminded me of James Herriot, who in his books, likewise showed respect for both the people and the animals he encountered.I also appreciated that the writer did not include details on sexual encounters and swear words were minimal.Anyone who ever imagined taking off on a horse for parts unknown, outdoor lovers, or even people like me who prefer to read about adventures rather than take off on them, would enjoy this book.

My pal Daniel Boling (songwriter and singer) posted about this on Facebook. Bought it on Kindle, now buying hard copies for two friends. A great adventure story with snakes, scorpions, human predators, an extraordinary friendship between the author and a 4-year-old Quarter Horse gelding and America. The lovely thing about the written word is the chance it gives readers to vicariously experience such stuff!

A must read! I love stories of long journeys, and this one works for me. It's a tale of adventure and a kind of coming of age that could maybe only happen in 1974 - and perhaps only be written now. The world has moved on and we have changed. The author looks back on this rich journey across his native America with the perspective of time, exploring his early life, from learning to be alone to the growing impetus to to take on such a momentous ride and beyond. As he relates his tale, with anecdotes that sometimes put you in mind of listening to a cowboy by the campfire, Egenes flicks easily between times in the past. Populated by myriad characters and other living creatures (not always friendly) in the changing landscape, his account is interspersed with personal philosophy and hung on the backbone of his relationship with the wonderful Gizmo.

Can you rate this 10 stars out of 5? This an AWESOME book written by a good friend of mine, Dr John Egenes! I had privilege to read and comment on an earlier draft of the book! This true story will make laugh, cry and make you think back over 40 years ago when life was simpler and in many way much better! Please support John and Gizmo's adventure! I promise you will not regret it! Many Thanks, Kirk

Disclaimer: The author is a friend of mine. I'd known of his adventure with Gizmo for years and had always hoped he'd put the story in writing."Man & Horse" is all I'd hoped it would be. The adventure would be compelling told by anyone but John has a way with words. No surprise since he's a talented songwriter. His language is simple, direct and I couldn't put the book down. I finished it in two sittings over a 24 hour period.John's description of being bitten several times by a black widow spider made me feel his excruciating pain. His encounter with a nasty mayor and deputy showed the patience he'd learned on the ride and from Gizmo. His self-deprecation appears throughout the book and I know that it is genuine. He's not a grandstander and that becomes obvious. His love, concern and admiration for Gizmo runs throughout the book and his telling of Gizmo's passing years after the ride was over brought a tear to my eye although it was not a maudlin telling. When John waxes philosophical, as he does now and again, he speaks with a wisdom learned from decades of living in the world of music and the world of horses. His wisdom is deceptively simple yet it is obvious he's spent a good deal of time mulling it over. He doesn't beat one over the head with it but just lets it flow as a part of his narrative. And a provocative narrative it is!Thank you, John.

Such a fabulous book, I haven't read anything like it in a long time. Egenes writes a strong crisp account of his trek across America on the back of his beloved horse, Gizmo. The story of how John and Gizmo grow up along the trip, and the depth of the relationship that John has with Gizmo, is the beating heart of the book. Along the way, their adventures and encounters run from abandoned desert windmills to hot city pavement, from friendly farmers to crooked politicians, giving a series of snapshots of life in a vanished America. Utterly recommended!
