About the Author

William Trevor was born in Mitchelstown, County Cork, and spent his childhood in provincial Ireland. He studied at Trinity College, Dublin. Trevor's characters are of a timeless quality, fully drawn out in their human qualities and complexities. While written in and for a past generational era, the timeless human qualities are transcendent, relatable even now decades later. Each story takes its time in developing and that in itself is a quality that is both desired and satisfying. No car chases, technological plot advancements, nor jarring plot twists. The surprises are the illumination of character by their actions and their words, at times contradictory as they might be...a reasonable price for hours of satisfying reading

Trevor's work nourishes me in ways that too many short story writers are unable to deliver. He takes you into the folds of human nature and—as they open—the resulting creases shift but never disappear.

A plain-speaking genius. Atmosphere, unembroidered diction, interesting characters you can (if you're an unsophisticated reader) "relate" to.

Trevor is a really excellent short story writer . I would recommend his works to anybody who enjoys short stories

William Trevor digs deep into the human psyche, and explores the fears and fantasies that lurk therein. Haunting, mysterious, and captivating, this book of stories will keep your attention for hours.

Good training tips

My son is a professional chef, graduating from the California Culinary Academy in San Francisco and cooking at top restaurants. When he bought me a cookbook, it was the best: a phone-book sized tome, "James Beard’s Theory and Practice of Good Cooking," written with Julia Child. This book contained everything I could possibly want or need to know about cooking.When I was reading Keith Hosman’s What I’d Teach Your Horse, I thought of that cookbook. Hosman’s book is a dense collection of very clear directions about how to do things with your horse that you probably never thought you could. I found this challenging reading, though it’s clear, well-written and fully explains Mr. Hosman’s techniques. The challenging part was that it describes a level of horsemanship and training that I could barely imagine. It also got me thinking about a bunch of things, which I'll touch on below.I began riding horses in 1955 and rode with some top trainers, back in the day. That was then; this is now. The new horsemanship is a whole new level of sophistication and training techniques. Hosman describes an exercise where the rider sits on his/her horse and imagines each of the horse’s hooves planted in the center of a clock, the face marked 1 to 12 in a circle in typical clock fashion. The rider teaches, through carefully explained steps, the horse to put each of its feet on each number of the clock. This has a number of training benefits.The rest of the book relies on similar exercises. I can’t imagine that level of training subtlety, yet I’ve been to seminars given my top trainers where they demonstrated similar feats. The book is full of things like this which sound promise to produce a horse whose training level is beyond anything I’ve experienced.Midway through, I began to feel discouraged. “I can never do that. I’m so bunged up physically (I’m 70), I can’t even ride for more than twenty minutes.” A thread of hope runs through this book, though. Just when I felt like what Mr. Hosman was saying was a really good idea that I would never be able to actualize, that famous skit from Saturday Night Live came to me. “Lowered Expectations,” about a dating service for regular people, as opposed to the supermodels usually pictured on dating sites. The opening credits of the skit show an exceptionally appearance-challenged couple walking on a littered path by a polluted river.“Lowered expectations!” thought I. “Baby steps.” I didn’t have to learn all that and apply it perfectly. "Just try a few things. Go slowly.”I loved a couple of things he brings up, like talking to your horse and telling it what to do. I do that all the time; horses are very good listeners on all sorts of things. I also loved his technique of visualizing your horse doing the right thing on the first try. That visualization technique won me lots of ribbons when I was a kid. I'd be going to sleep and imagine my horse and myself doing a stock horse routine. Piece of cake at the show the next day.This book piqued a fascination for Mr. Hosman’s work. I want to check out his seminar schedule. I highly recommend this book to my fellow horse people. As I worked my way through it, I thought, “This is hard. This is relearning everything I do automatically, but the result seems like it will be better all the way around.”I thought about why people want to do things better, with their horses, and in life. We have a responsibility, those of us who love horses, to do our best by them and give them the best lives possible. We also have a responsibility to do the best by the other creatures on this planet, the Earth itself, and our fellow human beings. And ourselves. So we learn new techniques in hopes of improving our riding and maybe improving this planet. That’s as worthwhile as it gets. Keith Hosman’s book definitely moves in that direction.I had a few “I wish he’d write about…” thoughts come up while reading this book. First, I’d like to see more about gaited horses and using the techniques in this book with them. We’ve had Peruvian Paso horses since the 1980s. The saddest thing I’ve seen is a new person who buys a Peruvian Paso horse, puts it with a Western trainer and then enters it in a Western Pleasure class at a Peruvian show. Invariably these horses, trained to hold their heads between their knees, come in last. Their owners and trainers don’t know they’re violated the breed standard. There’s got to me a way of incorporating the techniques shown here with gaited horses that won’t get them laughed out of a show arena.Also, I’d like to see a book, or something––audio, video––for handicapped riders. My physical condition––I’m 70 and falling apart––limits me. I’m still riding, and I want to ride as long as I can. But how? And how to be super safe so I don't go Splat!? How can I use these techniques with my limitations? New book, please. Maybe a workshop. :-)That’s my wish list, Mr. Hosman. Reading this book was a great experience. I was delighted to hear that there’s an audio version. The information in the book would be even more useful if you could sit on your horse and leaf through the exercises, having a narrator explain the steps. It is a doing book, a cookbook. Keith gifted me a copy of this book in return for an honest review. This is it!

I have been reading Keith Hosmans training tips for many years. In every aspect of training with my horses I can always reflect back upon what Keith has taught. Keith has taught me patience. Not only with my horses which is imperative, but also with my own self. I have learned not to get angry at my own self and give up. Something I was way too good at decades ago!! There is always an answer for everything that is presented to us as we work with our horses. All horses are different ofcourse. However the tips are based on common sense. Never forcing, never pushing. Also trying to view things behind the "horses eye". During the times that I am presented with a "scary" obstacle, such as rearing, striking, bucking or similar I know I can always search in my guides and find the right answer. I love that Keith is kind but straight to the point. There is no name calling or ridicule as you sometimes see out there in the horse world. Keith cares and he wants to help! I highly recommend this Book as well as registering your email address and receiving the highly needed updates, reminders and ofcourse high fives for continuing to try. Keith LOVES horses and he cares about people. You cannot go wrong!!

Though misleadingly advertised as the 3rd edition of 2012 (the image displayed here is the cover of that edition, for example), the text of the Kindle edition is in fact the 2nd edition of 1994. The 2012 edition is a major revision with additional chapters on the rather significant military events that have transpired since the early post-Cold War period. Extremely disappointing that Amazon has not only not updated the Kindle content but is advertising what it is selling as if it were the current version.

I LOVE the ability to buy the book and the matching audio. This textbook seems to be a standard, used at American Public University and the Air Force Academy, and others. It does have quite a lot of information, organized pretty well, and the narration is well done too.

This book is the same as published several years ago. There was no new material added or revisions done that I could determine. The publication date is even several years old. It is a good book and I highly recommend it to someone who hasn't read the material or wants a nice introduction. But, if you read it within the last 15 years, it hasn't changed.

thought this book did a good job of documenting america's military history from 17th century to late 20th; if you are interested in this subject matter, i recommend very highly but it is a long book & if you do not have interest in this subject matter, forget it; i think he did a good job of documenting the history but in a light manner; i agree with a lot of his opinions

Excellent text am going to use it for a military history class, is a fast read and gives excellent historical insight into the wars that America has fought.Would recommend to a casual reader for American Military History or for someone who is interested in a more serious dierection and can used the references to further their study. First of all, I am horrified at the reasons for the one star reviews. Isn't it possible to get reviews like that (by people who have not even read the book!) removed? I went and marked them all as inappropriate, because it is unfathomable to me that people decided not only was this book not worth $1, but CubeKid should be "punished" for his impetuous and irrational choice to not offer this book as KindleUnlimited. Bah!I didn't come across book 8 when it was not a KindleUnlimited offering, but if I had, I would have happily paid $1 for it. Geez, one-star-review-people--this is quality writing and if he wants to actually charge money for it, is that a crime? CubeKid, I'm sure those reviews get under your skin. How utterly unappreciative of all your hard work! Don't let them. They are the minority, I'm sure. I'd like to think most of your readers don't throw hissy fits.Okay, on to the actual book and the reason for my five star rating. CubeKid was witty, engaging in his writing and grammatically sound in book 8, which is always true, but it is especially impressive this round for cranking out such a fast story (and wow, it really was fast!). As always, my kids (Katie and Ben! ;)) loved it and I enjoyed reading it to them. Any publishing houses contact you yet? I mentioned my thoughts on this in my review on book six, and I still think that your overall story arc has excellent potential to be picked up and republished (depending on copyright infringement issues), or you might just be contacted to write something else. Okay, so I'm a reading girl, I can read 978 page books in 4 days, I usually read from 8pm-11pm, on vacation I read from 7pm-2am. I read a LOT. And yet I can't get enough of this series.It 1 of my favorites like, Keepers, Bella Sara, Horse Crazy, Harry Potter, and other horse and very good science-fic books. There's no shortage of Minecraft Diary stories out there, but this particular series has been wonderful! We picked up the first book in a brick and mortar store on a whim and bought the next 3 on Amazon by the end of the week! The characters are relatable and Runt is hysterical! My daughter (2nd grade) and I take turns reading diary days before bed and we are both really into the story and love to discuss what we would do if we were in the same situations as Runt. Highly recommend!

This book condenses years of experience into one clear and concise guide, preventing every rehab newbie from making years of costly mistakes.For each component of 25 different types of work on a house, the author details the nature of the work and the statement of work line items that each type generates. Then he breaks out a discussion of "Cost Guidelines," "Determining Your Local Prices, " and "How To Pay for the Job." For an example of the intense level of detail given, in the "gutters/ soffit/ fascia" category, he breaks out $ estimates for cleaning gutters, replacing gutters, and replacing soffit or fascia, giving his reader costs per linear foot estimates for each type of gutter or soffit material- aluminum, steel, vinyl/ plastic, and copper/zinc, as appropriate. For cleaning gutters, he tells us the costs will depend on linear feet of gutters, the height and steepness of the roof, and whether downspouts need to be detached to be cleaned. If we know generally these three things, we should be able to get accurate, local head to head price bids. He goes on to warn NOT to use uninsured gutter cleaners because it can be a dangerous job, and that we are most likely to get the best pricing bundled with the roofing or siding contractors, if we are doing that kind of work on the house. He also comments that since this is a one day job (as opposed to one justifying a draw or a materials upfront payment) the contractor should be paid only once the job is completed. To a person experienced in housing construction, this all may be 'old hat,' but to a person new to home rehab, it is extremely valuable!This book pulls every aspect of repair cost estimation into manageable chunks so that none is overlooked or unaddressed in a detailed scope of work or budget. It addresses a very complex topic in the most thorough, detailed, and practical manner possible. Alerts to local costs (e.g., union labor in NY/NJ, building code variability by climate/weather circumstances) and seasonality are all over the place. This is a great book- highly recommended!

When you start out down the path of investing, whether it be renting or flipping, you will almost immediately come to the "and then I put _blank_ into it to get it ready to rent/sell." and then you realize...how in the world do I know what ___blank___ is?!This book systematically breaks down all areas of a property and the types of repairs that one could encounter and then systematically goes through the range of cost for each type of repair, units of measurement for each repair (by square foot? by sheet? etc) and generally prepares you for dealing with contractors and getting estimates for anything you could think of.If you don't know about construction and contracting costs it can prepare you to ask intelligent questions when getting a quote, know what to expect, and empower you in unfamiliar territory. If you are familiar with various construction costs and related considerations, the systematic approach laid out by J Scott will help you "do your thing" in a repeatable and predictable way, which is the goal.This is a unique book in the field of real estate. If you want a book to read through by your fireplace to give you an overview of real estate investing, this isn't it. If you're moving beyond "theory" and taking your first steps into practice, this book is a must. If you're in practice and want to organize and systematize your rehab plans and cost better, this book is a must.I started with this book did any rehab, and have used it throughout a handful of rehabs now, and am amazed at how consistently accurate estimations from this book are. Once you figure out where your area fits in on the cost range for the ranges presented in the book (for instance our area work we've done tends to be in the lower 25% of the range j. scott presents), it becomes very easy to estimate a lot of unknowns.This is the book for when the rubber meets the road in your real estate investing journey.

A good book overall if you are new to rehabbing. Problem is there are many sloppy errors and typos which is a shame because you begin to question the credibility of the author. Even one or two typos are bad but when you start to see them every other page it gets annoying when you spend over $20 for a book. This is not a high school book report. It’s not difficult to fix these errors!

This is THE BOOK to have! Excellent reference for beginner investors/rehabbers/flippers/landlords/homeowners, great for more seasoned professionals. It is packed with tons of information on how different parts of the house work, life expectancy of mechanical systems and materials, and price ranges for specific jobs. The authors give you countless tips on how to research problems and issues, what the expected price range might be and even how to find the right contractors for the job. Not sure if there's anything like this book currently on the market. Well written and easy to read.I keep going back to pull information from this book all the time. Highly recommend to read this along with it’s companion book "The Book on Flipping Houses: How to Buy, Rehab, and Resell Reside".

My expectations were set too high as the book ended up having a lot of caveats. Everything is really location based so the estimates don't really mean much when the ranges are significant. Still a good read to understand things that you might not think of that needs attention.
