I've often thought it a shame I read "Winter Sea," before reading any other Kearsley books, for it set an incredibly high standard for her books. She writes beautifully, always, but "Winter Sea," was exceptional, I believe. As usual, this book is beautifully written, but it is a story where little happens until you're 75% into the story. The setting in Chinon, France is described so you can almost smell it. Certainly, one can picture it easily; the author is THAT good with descriptions of the environment of the story-as she always is. Some interesting characters, most of whom don't connect closely, and don't really have much to do with "the mystery...a couple of them do, but we don't know that until nearly the last few pages, and then it almost is like a throw-away thing--I can't even remember the main character's name as I write this, and I just finished the book 3 hours ago! That is telling. I will always remember "Carrie" of "Winter Sea. A soft hint now and then that there might, or might not be a mystery. There are interesting facts about King John I and his child bride, Isabell of Angouleme, and I kept waiting to see how that might impact the lives of the characters; a stretch. I am a fan of The Plantagenets' and hoped for a bit of time travel, or something to keep me going based on their history. I just kept reading because Ms. Kearsley is an artist with words. Finally, something happens; the reason for some things is explained with little basis for me, at least enough to care about who was the bad guy, and why. But, it seemed anticlimactic. So is the romance, such as it it. Ah! Emily is the lady in question. There just wasn't enough to make me "can't wait for the next ... whatever." I'd give it 5 stars for the beauty of the writing, but the S.L.O.W. pace brought it down to 4, and the "not much happening for so long" is the reason for the 3 stars.
Long before I read the blurb at the back of the book, I was likening the writing in this novel to Mary Stewart, who is one of my favorite author's. Given the absence of any mention of computers or cellphones or the like, it is difficult to pin the time frame to any particular time as the writing is timeless. The absence of gratuitous and graphic sex helps as well. Instead, the story is all about the characters and the suspense. The book has mystery, history, humor, tragedy, romance, and lots of suspense. I will be looking for Kearsley's other novels. I highly recommend this.
I really like Susanna Kearsley. It isn't the plot so much as the characters. I don't remember much of the plot, but I really like her heroines. They are sensible, not silly. I guess most of books fall into the romantic suspense category. She reminds me a lot of Mary Stewart, an author I loved when I was in high school, but don't care much for now.Her heroines don't do stupid things, but still find themselves in danger. And then they get themselves out, instead of waiting to be rescued by the hero. I like their independence and resiliency. They use their heads to figure things out.This book has the bonus of being set in Chinon, France, with a medieval castle, legends of a hidden treasure, and a mysterious vintner for lagniappe. I enjoyed the fruits of her research she must have put into the book.A thoroughly enjoyable read.
The story takes place in Chinon, France and the author states in her notes that the locations actually exist in this town. Only the events are fiction. The story begins with Harry convincing his cousin Emily to meet him in Chinon where he plans to do some research on the jewels hidden by Queen Isabelle in the tunnels beneath the castle/chateau. (Isalbelle was the wife of John who was the son of Eleanor of Aquitaine.)Emily was rather reluctant to meet Harry there, as he had been rather unreliable in the past despite his promises. Harry of course did not show up. Emily became involved with a variety of people, mostly men. All sorts of mysteries are involved. Where was Harry? Where were the treasures? Who is causing the multiple deaths? Who was Harry planning to meet? Which of the men will Emily ultimately end up with?Although I enjoyed this book, it was not one of my favorite Kearsley books. Although it is a historical novel, I consider it more of a mystery and romance novel. Unlike most of the Kearsley novels that I've read, the paranormal events played a very small role.
I hate to write any bad review about a Susanna Kearsley book, because she really is one of my favorite authors. However, this book just wasn't quite as cohesive and developed as the other books she has released lately. I felt that there was an intention introduced at the beginning of the book to explore King John and his wife and their treasure and tragedy, but they were only given a little bit of page space here and there. They seemed to be abandoned for the love interests, which were a little bit abrupt as well. I still really enjoyed Ms. Kearsley's writing, and couldn't put the book down, but it just wasn't in the same league with books like The Winter Sea and Shadowy Horses.
Kearsley is an astonishingly good writer. I was delighted to catch this on a Kindle Daily Deal because usually her books are outside of my price range and too few of them are in the public library. I will read anything she writes.Something I love is when the geography becomes a character in a novel. Kearsley has done extensive research into the history she cites and clearly knows the town about which she writes.Something else I love is when the writer fools me into thinking I know whodunit only to completely surprise me. That happens so seldom.
