I purchased Ms. Bishop's book after seeing her on one of the weekend shows (20/20 or Date Line or 48 Hours). Her sister and brother-in-law were murdered, a tragedy for the whole family. Families don't recover completely after something like that, you just find a way to go on. Ms. Bishop, who is a devout Christian, eventually came to understand that she couldn't go forward unless she forgive her sister's murderer. I've read and listened to other crime victims and that is definitely a step towards healing and working towards a new life. However, Ms. Bishop took it one step further. She started writing to the murderer and a dialogue started between the two. She contacted the murderer's father when she decided to go meet the man in prison. The father, who went to visit his son regularly, gave Ms. Bishop "the drill" on where to go and what to expect. Since then Ms. Bishop regularly meets with the man as well.I have read of other victims meeting the perpetrator in prison as part of the forgiving and healing process. But what is different about this case is the murderer was either 16 or 17 when he committed the murders but was tried as an adult and sentenced as one as well. Ms. Bishop is an attorney working in the public defender's office in Chicago. She is actively working on a bill that would give convicts convicted for life when they were not adults and opportunity to appeal out of the initial trial verdict.I respect Ms. Bishop's devotion to her church and her beliefs. And I respect her kind heart, as well. But as someone who has encountered sociopaths and studied them endlessly, it's concerning. Young people who want to kill, just to know "what it feels like" -- well, I seriously doubt they are truly able to be redeemed. If at 16 or 17 you pull that trigger and kill two people you don't know because you're curious, there is already set in them a serious lack of boundaries, lack of empathy, etc.The murderer was shown on the TV show in one of their conversations and while he appears friendly and normal, sociopaths are very good at reading people, and observing people who are "normal" so they know how "to act" in order to gain whatever it is they want. While this book is interesting, and Ms. Bishop is definitely a fine person, I felt I could not give it more than three stars because I think, at least in the case of her sister's killer, she is far more interested in being a stellar Christian than a person using careful, common sense.
While I don't agree with all her views, I appreciate most of what she said. The analogy about a fist in the face being like the death of a loved one was excellent. Her story is fascinating and she did what God led her to do in regards to David. But her whole book was geared to being anti capital punishment and and anti life-without-parole. Nowhere does she mention the pro-capital punishment arguments. She even says that for final answers she turn to respected people, her "true north", whereas I would say scripture has the final say. She's right though, in that while serving out justice, we still need to see Jesus in prisoners' lives, seeking their redemption. It was heartening to see that David had changed from the sociopath he used to be.
Wow!I heard an interview with her on Ave Maria Radio, Al Kresta's show on December 4, 2015 which can be listened to on their website accessing the audio archives. Her interview is what impelled me to buy the book. Most of us are called to Forgive at least one serious offense in our lives, and probably most of us find this difficult. Jeanne's struggle shows that with God, All Things Are Possible, walking with Jesus in His way of Grace. I cannot recommend this book highly enough. Along with Immaculee Ilibagiza, Rwandan holocaust survivor, Jeanne proves that each one of us Can Forgive because Jesus Will Give us what we need to Bless those who curse you....
Before I read this book, I always thought my answer to "do you believe in the death penalty" was a firm "yes." I never even considered the issue of juvenile life sentences because (thank God!) I've never had to. The outstanding question (for me) after finishing this book is what would I do? My answer to both is, I don't know. What I love about Jeanne's book is the way she presents her journey. The presentation is so critical; you have to read it to understand what I mean. Please read this book. Her story has me believing my confusion is not such a bad thing. Jeanne, thank you for your honesty and for your courage.
What tragedies can happen to families in this world. It is difficult to empathize with the author. She certainly has looked at the many sides of this problem. As I have said before, I don't know what I would do. My tendency is to over-analyze situations. It is certainly room for thought.
This is a well written book. It has a profound theme very well executed. Its conclusion (closing) is beautiful; life can indeed bring horrible tragedy, but our response can redeem the situation.
This slim book packs a powerful message about forgiveness. It is well written and the author's spirituality shines through as she takes us on the journey from the murder of her family members to her ability to finally be able to fully forgive the man who committed the crime. Her discussion of restorative justice is excellent.
This is a book written by the lawyer sister of a murder victim who was a young pregnant woman, happily married, when a juvenile senselessly kills her, her husband, and their unborn child. Jeanne Bishhop shares her journey of pain, sorrow, faith, forgiveness and reconciliation, and her evolution in thought regarding the death penalty, and life without parole sentencing for juveniles. Well written, captivating, and all consuming...definitely food for thought for me today in my faith journey.
